  1. Past hour
  2. Any Braxton completists here?
  3. Interesting project and question. But I dont' think I'm playing. I know I'll be having trouble identifying many of the older African Americans offhand but beyond that ... I bought the book (Art Kane Harlem 1958) when it came out a couple of years ago and have looked at this photo so often in the intervening years that I would probably recognize several that normally would be off the radar. Definitely including the odd men out ... : https://jazzbuffalo.org/2020/07/22/bill-crump-a-great-day-in-harlems-mystery-man/ https://harlem.org/people/scovillebrown.html
  4. Yeah, I thought of that work too when the initial idea for this came up. Just like this clock, it's fun to dip into at various times if you get to see the installation.
  5. In 1996, Gordon Parks photographed survivors who were still alive showing where they were in 1958 for A Great Day In Harlem..Only 2 survive today: Benny Golson and Sonny Rollins (Sonny Rollins is missing in the 1996 photo. He was standing behind Marian McPartland in 1958 but not in 1996.)
  6. Mark Wingfield – Tales From The Dreaming City ... 2018
  7. Nicky Egan "Back To You" (Transistor Sound) 2021 ....
  8. He was the trumpet player with Charles Mingus from 1974 until Mingus' death. As a leader he has recorded numerous CDs, including a couple on the revived Blue Note. Here is his biography on the Blue Note site. https://www.bluenote.com/artist/jack-walrath/ I've seen the band on the linked CD at Smalls and ordered it.
  9. Trumpeter who was part of the late Mingus crowd. Did some leader records in the late 70s and early 80s that must have sold reasonably because I see them everywhere. I am not sure why he dropped off after that. Other members will know more than me.
  10. George Wein Is Alive and Well in Mexico Great record. Three leads who are full of character. Disappointed that they didn't take the Herb Alpert gimmick further though.
  11. Today
  12. We just can guess, but for sure her "2nd career" with EmArcy/Gitanes/Verve granted her additional opportunities ....
  13. I don't know who this is. Does anyone have some background info? https://jackwalrath.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-smalls?from=discover_page
  14. Don't know if I'm interested yet but I thought I'd let folks know... https://newbraxtonhouse.bandcamp.com/album/10-comp-lorraine-2022-2
  15. You know I used to think, "you win on Opening Day, you're in first place." But apparently that is wrongthink. MLB.com lists teams that are tied in alphabetical order, and then shows this on the preview screen for the Blue Jays - Rays second game of the year. WTH? Also, ha ha Yankee fans, Sox are in 2nd place and Yanks in third.
  16. Albert Mangelsdorff – A Jazz Tune I Hope
  17. Well. . . I wonder if this record could have been made earlier in her career. Luckily, it was made right before her last.
  18. Electric Opening Day moments from around MLB … including a fifth straight Opening Day HR from Red Sox outfielder Tyler O’Neill. 😮
  19. It's telling, that Helen Merrill felt ready going back to her roots @ Croatia only at this point of career (the following album "Lilac Wine" should be her last) .... Steve Lacy never disappoints, but the album concept as a whole is touching ....
  20. That does look tasty. Did you ever see the film version equivalent (Marclay's The Clock)? I think this was at MoMA and San Francisco MoMA and probably a few other museums. https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/1308 I finished Shteyngart's Absurdistan and am just starting Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time. I actually did seek out an older copy with the Edward Gorey cover, though it's certainly not one of his best covers...
  21. soulpope

    Ran Blake
