  1. When did record release dates become standardized across the US? In the 1990s I know Tuesday was the release day for almost all labels, now it's Friday.
  2. I mixed you up with mjzee!
  3. yeah I am so glad I pay for the subscription, I've learned so much. Are there any other Jazz substacks worth reading?
  4. I heard this song 1991 or so on WXCI, never heard Can before--sent me on a subsequent journey--an abstract James Brown? I'm there!
  5. I use wikipedia now or discogs for the info I used to get from AllMusic. Haven't been to Allmusic since the maybe early Obama administration.
  6. I always had the impression he was in the "good, not great" category.
  7. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/washingtonpost/name/j-cumberland-obituary?id=5973432 @DIS Maybe you could ask around any Washington DC record stores, or Second Story Books? Maybe these guys? https://www.facebook.com/iajrc/
  8. I saw all of Smith's 2019 Big Ears performances and didn't see a snit. That would be very out of character of him!
  9. Huh,a Google search shows he was a Washington DC-area band leader, and founded a precision ball bearing business, died in 2011. A link to his obituary in the Washington Post won't work for me, and won't let me embed it here.
  10. A lot of "Mojo Magazine" jazz at this festival, one reason I've soured on it. I'd be back if they bring Wadada Leo Smith, Roscoe Mitchell, or Anthony Braxton back like in the pre-covid times.
  11. Volume 7 is available on Quobuz today
  12. In the letter to Coleman Hawkins, he puts a lot of emphasis on being a "MAN", which in context, seems to Sonny to mean taking responsibility and keeping healthy in mind and body. Those are always good values to have, but I credit his equating it with "manliness" to the times. I'm sure Sonny would use less gendered language today.
  13. Very early, when I was getting into jazz, I was sort of listening to Sonny chronologically, but the RCA stuff when I got to it, blew my punk rock and 90s techno-trained ears away
  14. Chuck don't release no junk on his label!
  15. I've followed the series on Chandos, I've found stimulating music in them all, but my favorite is Symon Laks.
  16. Yes but some of us (me, ahem) didn't see this news at the time. Obviously, it has a bearing on his legacy.
  17. I'm not as plugged in as you guys, and I must have missed discussion here about his behavior, but Cadence was an absolute formative influence on my listening two/three decades ago, and bought a lot of music by mail order from him. He must have gotten over his antipathy to Anthony Braxton since Braxton is on a number of CIMP releases. I don't recall reading anything negative about Braxton in the years I read Cadence. Update: Just searched the archives and GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
  18. Larry, long may you live in healthy mind and body.
  19. In a box set of Carl Seemann broadcasts on the Orfeo label: Strasbourg was, unusually within the Third Reich, characterized by a liberal and tolerant coexistence of French and German culture. This atmosphere was one that was remembered with great fondness on a personal and professional level by those who had lived through it. 😬 I wager not everyone was enamored.
  20. Wish I had also mentioned it was broadcast this past Saturday at theaters around the world.
