  1. Now every time the cat jumps on or off the couch the tracks automatically shuffle. Jobs is a genius!
  2. Available for pre-order at CDUniverse for $10.15 - February 10th release. Paul Chambers Quintet Grant Green - Grant's First Stand Jackie McLean - One Step Beyond Leo Parker - Rollin' With Leo Horace Parlan - Up and Down Stanley Turrentine - A Chip Off the Old Block Use the links to support Organissimo.... we still do that don't we...?
  3. as of now this album is still in print, a cd-version from 1999. but ... happy to see that the rvg-series is still alive! I'm sure I've got a Conn of that one. This is getting confusing.. You're probably thinking of First Session rather than First Stand the former was in the Connoisseur Series.
  4. I just got back from a Florida Disney vacation. Made it over to the Virgin Megastore in the Downtown Disney shopping area. I was amazed to see a well-stocked jazz selection. The jazz area was even in its own quiet corner. I think what surprised me most was the nearly dozen or so JVC XRCDs. Unfortunately they were $32 a pop and none came home with me. So while they may be a dying breed, this store has a bit of life left.
  5. The purge continues The question is... will Art Blakey's Freedom Rider go RVG or just go?
  6. Funny, just picked that one up from Amazon (on sale $8.97) and am listening to it right now. It's made up of two sessions: 1) Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren, Tony Williams and 2) Kenny Dorham, Sonny Clark, Butch Warren, Billy Higgins. My preference is for the session with Dorham and Clark (the earlier of the two sessions) but both are enjoyable. This was the last of the bebop material before One Step Beyond. To me this is a good mix of the before and the beyond. Probably not the best statement from McLean, but certainly worth nine bucks.
  7. I found another CD-R package on Amazon.com presumably like the Gil Melle. Don Wilkerson Quite a bit more expensive than the Gil Melle. I think I'll wait to see if it comes down.
  8. Too cool to be forgotten! The animated covers couw created have a permanent home. You can get both the avatar and full-sized versions here.
  9. Based on this release I would consider purchasing others like it where the original CD is no longer available or where used versions are selling at collector prices.
  10. I hate to call them inkjet streaks because that would be overstating it. But when viewed at an angle you can see lines from top to botton on the cover pages and pages with photos. Again, these aren't as bad as your entry-level consumer inkjets where there can be small but visible gaps in the image. What's funny is that when I tried to scan it to show what I am talking about they didn't show up. The lines are really only visible from an angle. Bottom line (no pun intended) seems much more like a pro-sumer print job than full-blown offset press. One final note - could someone with an original copy check the liner notes to see if Michael Cuscuna is listed as Coscuna in the opening sentence. It appears as Coscuna in my version.
  11. Definitely not original packaging. It was made on demand along with the discs but as you can see, very well done. As far as Amazon backing the product - where the product description discloses the CD-R it also reads "Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply. "
  12. I've played enough CD --> MP3 --> CDs to recognize the low bit-rate examples of this type of conversion and subjectively these discs did not exhibit similar characteristics. Interesting tool. I might just give it a shot. CD --> MP3 --> CD is exactly the type of thing a "fly-by-night", low budget, scam artist type of operation might employ. <sincere>respectable businessmen like yourself wouldn't consider doing business like this. so I am not surprised it didn't make sense to you. wish there were more like you.</sincere> Please note: lack of <sincere> tags around future posts does not mean I'm not. I just felt it was important to stress my true meaning.
  13. True. The fear that these might have come from an original CD ripped to MP3 and then written to a CD-R is not the case.
  14. Got my copy. Booklet and tray liner/back notes look pretty darn good. Heavy stock, clean images. Probably done on a high-end ink jet. Doesn't smack of homemade. Discs have nice label - definitely CD-R. No problem reading the discs at the office. Sound quality is decent. Not using my best gear and currently playing at low-levels. But no reason to send it back. I'll post some pictures when I get home.
  15. If you don't have it yet... On sale now for $19.49
  16. I opted for the SuperSaver shipping (threw in a couple of Connoisseurs on sale) so it won't be here until December 3 or 4. When it arrives I will post a full report on the quality of the discs and packaging.
  17. Gil Melle - Complete Blue Note 50's Sessions I ordered one and it says shipping soon... I'll believe it when I have it in my hands.
  18. Got an email from True Blue today- A large number of superb titles from the Blue Note labels will go out of print by the end of this year, including a number of CDs from the RVG and Connoisseur Series. So you don't miss out on albums that you have been intending to purchase, here is a list of the casualties of 2008. We don't know the exact quantities left on these items, so it's best to order sooner rather than later. To ease the squeeze, we have put a number of these titles on sale. 19. I got the Columbia Small Group Swing on sale. Arrived quickly.
  20. Ok, show me a professor of anything that can fill a 70,000 seat stadium at a minimum of $50 a ticket.
  21. I suspect it is a glitch in the CDUniverse site. Possibly a null value gets set to Pid by default. As you can see from the link you posted CDU uses pid as URL variable. Either that or record company consolidation has run amuck.
  22. Ok, now I can fess up. I bought the set too. I've been into jazz for just under 10 years. My first copy of KOB was the pitch-corrected re-issue. So this set, with all the extras was worth my time and $. I however received a set from Amazon that had rub marks on the discs that DID affect playback. When are these packing designers going to learn? Just put the discs in a flippin' jewel case...a sleeve...ANYTHING that protects the surface of the disc. While I wouldn't wish a defective set on anyone maybe if there are enough scratched discs the manufacturers will get a clue. Probably not.
  23. I have to respect an artist's decision to release only that of which he is proud...but I reserve the right to complain about it. Case in point - Mr. Rollins decided not to release his 50th Anniversary Carnegie Hall concert (which was supposed to have been paired with some of the historic performance) but then announces this attic cleaning exercise. I'll let the music speak for itself and then decide my level of interest in this series.
  24. Dang it. I had no interest in this one. From following discussion of Braxton in the past I didn't think this would be my kind of thing. I watched the interview on the Mosaic site and listened to the clips. This may be my kind of thing.....
