  1. I usually attend the Detroit Jazz Fest 2 or 3 days. Last year was an unmitigated disaster with our daughter, so I likely will be attending by myself on Labor Day only. The Louis Hayes group and Michael Weiss tribute to Barry Harris are my only definites because the schedule's overlaps are brutal. I've never seen David Hazeltine or Michael Weiss and seeing back-to-back sets with Hayes and Lewis Nash sounds great to me.
  2. Standards has really grown on me over the years. I also don't there are many opportunities to hear Jymie Merritt away from Blakey (or Blakey sidemen) or as part of a trio. As for the set, I don't see myself going for it unless I find it for a lower price down the road. With Mosaic, I tend to focus on material I can't find elsewhere, so current releases like the Savory material and Tristano recordings are more likely candidates.
  3. On my 4th listen to this, my early impression is that it'd be hard to beat for a single disc of Hawk.
  4. I recently acquired this wonderful collection and went online to fill in gaps for personnel due to the spotty liners. Contrary to the discography for the Stuff Smith session listed above, the label for the release has this. Do we know what is correct?
  5. Cliff Jackson is also on the wonderful Master Jazz Piano Mosaic and has at least one album on Black Lion.
  6. Those three are fine trumpeters, but Magnarelli is 63, Swana 61 and Wendholt is 57, though they are younger than masters like Tolliver, Henderson, Rava, Vache, Faddis, McPhee, etc.
  7. It seems like most of this thread has been about the lead-up to the set's release and it shipping, but there has been little discussion of the music. I managed to score a copy for a tad under 100 bucks after tax and shipping, which is an incredible bargain, so I'm excited. I thought I'd try to spur some discussion.
  8. I spotted Joe Farnsworth (singing with brushes!), Lenny White, Mike LeDonne, Nat Reeves, Rick Germanson and Warren Wolf.
  9. I really don't think I had any Fats Waller other than the very recently acquired session from the Freeman/Condon Mosaic and the Louisiana Sugar Babies session from the James P. Johnson Mosaic. I decided to dive in with both feet and grab this volume.
  10. Rusty Bryant Returns is a crowd pleaser around here, if you want some classic, funky soul jazz to get them moving.
  11. 5. She is the hippest little girl, making up lyrics to Duke songs, requesting an obscure Duke song at preschool and requesting that I play Joe Pass and Sonny Stitt since before she was 3. We took her to see a piano trio in the vein of The 3 Sounds at a local library and she danced like a maniac in the front row. The bassist and drummer kept laughing and came up to talk to her afterward. I'm a lucky dad.
  12. This got my daughter dancing immediately.
  13. This is putting me in a violin mood. I'll have to spin the Stuff Smith Mosaic or Duke's violin session soon. I'm really enjoying the contrast between Smith and Grappelli.
  14. For what it's worth, Qobuz has CD-quality downloads of it at $26.09 per two-disc volumes and Amazon has it at $19.99 for mp3. It's an imperfect solution, but better than nothing.
  15. A recent download of the Louisiana Sugar Babies session from the James P. Johnson Mosaic was my first Fats Waller recording. I quickly realized I needed more and figured that this could be a good choice.
  16. My library's streaming/download service has this. Does anyone care to share some of their favorite sessions? I don't see myself being disciplined enough to download everything at 10 downloads per week, but I can see grabbing the best sessions. I already downloaded and am really enjoying the Louisiana Sugar Babies session.
  17. It is not my listing, but someone is selling the Buck Clayton Mosaic on eBay for $30, without the box of giant book. For what it's worth, I ordered the Buddy Rich set they were selling for $40.
  18. It was actually my second listen and I went straight to a third. I recommend it for fans of those involved. It's a feel-good live date that sounds like it would have fit on Black and Blue.
  19. In an age where you can stream almost anything, I love walking out of a record store with something I never would have known to stream. I don't know anything about Doug Castellano and I'm sure not sure what I've heard of Vinnie Tanno, but it's a heck of a group with Arnett Cobb, Nat Adderley, Frank Rosolino, Chubby and Duffy Jackson. Another $2 find.
  20. I was being too selective and fleetingly considered skipping this one at a mere $2, thinking I already had a ton of Pres. Thank goodness I grabbed it. This is top-shelf, well-recorded Pres, with his full-bodied sound jumping out of the speakers. Holy moly. Am I nuts to say this is essential Pres?
  21. Previously unknown to me, Talbert had sideman such as Lucky Thompson, Dodo Marmarosa, Art Pepper, Hal McKusick, Al Killian, Claude Williamson, Gene Roland and Babe Russin on these sessions. Had I not recently looked up Sea Breeze Jazz, I may have overlooked this one when scrolling through eBay.
