  1. I bought this last week, the day after seeing another Memphis great, George Coleman. I remember seeing Harold Mabern and him telling a young pianist to check out Newborn. This is only my second Newborn-led date and I have just one of his sideman albums, a great Howard McGhee session. I have some catching up to do, as I'm really enjoying this one.
  2. Disc 1: Another $2 find. In the likely event that I don't go the completist route by grabbing the JSP set and single-disc RCA compilation, I'd be happy owning the bulk of it with this set.
  3. Argh. That's embarrassing. I don't know whether to blame my large thumbs and small screen or auto-correct, but I've corrected the title.
  4. I don't know if we could reach an agreement, but DM me.
  5. This was part of my recent Princeton Record Exchange haul, in which I paid $2 for every album (along with 6/7 discs of a Trane box for $10). I was pretty selective and could/should have bought more, but they are all winners. Bickert was well represented between this and two Rob McConnell albums.
  6. I was interested in grabbing the Keystone Trio albums 10-15 years ago and never got around to it. I finally picked this and the Newk album, along with a George Mraz trio album of Duke songs. Besides being my favorite soul-jazz drummer, Idris Muhammad sounds great in a more swinging context.
  7. I only found out about this one when looking up more Kenny Kirkland. For some, reason, it surprised me to see Lonnie Plaxico on such an early recording.
  8. I picked this up last week for two bucks. I really need to grab the Savory Mosaic when it goes on last chance.
  9. I owned some of the Atlantic material (Coltrane's Sound, Giant Steps [Deluxe] and Bags and Trane) and then found the set without the box and liners at Princeton Record Exchange for $10 last week. I then realized today that it was likely only $10 because it is missing Disc 6. As I am just missing Ole Coltrane, I guess I'm still happy with the price.
  10. I arrived in New York yesterday after 450+ miles of driving, took a brief nap and caught two sets of George Coleman at Smalls with Spike Wilner, Peter Washington and Joe Farnsworth. On the way back to my car, I gave in to temptation and saw a Tardo Hammer set at Mezzrow. The presence of Steve Williams on the gig (Lee Hudson was on bass) ultimately sold me on it, as I am a Shirley Horn fan. I then got caught in a traffic snarl that added 50 minutes on to my drive home. Tonight I saw a Warren Vache trio gig at Shanghai, with guitarist Doug Clarke (a protege of Tal Farlow!) and bassist Earl Sauls. Tomorrow will end the trip with two sets of George Cables at the Vanguard. The day after I return, I'll be catching Herbie Hancock. I'd say this is a good week.
  11. From seeing him last night, I think the look you are referring to can be attributed to some vision loss, which could be more of a problem when playing in dark clubs. George still is as sharp as a tack and was engaging with the band and the audience during and between sets.
  12. I was there last night. Big George has still got it.
  13. Give me Clarence Thomas and Bill Crow over Clarence Thomas and Harlan Crow any day.
  14. On the eve of a New York trip that'll include seeing the great George Cables at the Village Vanguard, I'm listening to this and recalling my first trip to New York 15 years ago, during which I sat near Grissett through two fiery Tom Harrell sets at the Vanguard. I don't know if Grissett still plays with Harrell at all, but he really is a fine pianist who deserves more attention.
  15. I saw Gayle play a solo concert maybe 6 years ago in Buffalo. I only had one of his albums and didn't know much about him. Maybe it was because he wasn't performing in character, but his spoken word was uncontroversial; I enjoyed the concert.
  16. I didn't know about Williams having cancer. I saw him a few years ago in a duo with Vandermark and he was fantastic. He has a huge sound. I just Googled, discovered the GoFundMe and donated.
  17. I had a few dollars in Amazon credits set to expire and thus paid a couple of bucks for my first Mosca-led date.
  18. Oooooh, I didn't know that Coker had recorded under his own name. I'll have to track it down, as I really like what I've heard of him with Stitt, Criss and Edwards.
