  2. I couldn't find a cover image, but I'm listening to Out of the Comfort Zone by Gerald Dunn and the Jazz Disciples, an album produced by Bobby Watson. I found it at a book sale two days ago. He was previously unknown to me, but Dunn is an important member of the KC scene, working as a saxophonist, at the American Jazz Museum and as a promoter. He even has an annual event providing wellness checks to musicians. It's a solid album.
  3. I had to look it up, but Rachel Z had to have been one of my first jazz concerts by a nationally known musician. It was with Buster Williams and the drummer from this date, Bobbie Rae, in 2003. I can't believe it was so long ago.
  4. To clarify a bit, out of the 9 tracks on the newer Omnivore reissues that weren't part of the five-disc box, 6 were previously unreleased alternates and 3 were tracks that were on the original LPs but not included in the box. It looks like individual tracks can be had for $1.29 per track from Amazon, although I haven't looked to see if some might be album-only downloads.
  5. Man, that group (minus Jemmott) played Cleveland years ago and I missed it. My appreciation for the organ wasn't where it is today and I didn't like the club, so I skipped it. Oof. Rest in peace, Mr. Wilson, and thank you for the music.
  6. I'm not sure if this was discussed elsewhere, but Omnivore reissued this music. I was delighted/dismayed to see that there were several extra tracks that didn't make the original box set. Fortunately, my library has a streaming/download service that'll allow me to get the missing tracks without buying more CDs or paying $3 per track (gulp) for a lossless download. For those who are also interested, there are 2 tracks from the Stitt session with Russ Freeman, 3 from the Stitt session with Lou Levy, 2 tracks from the Jack Sheldon session (1 vocal ), 1 from the Pete Jolly session and 1 from the Watrous session. There were no added tracks from the Konitz and Manne sessions.
  7. Yes, certainly, and with his past health issues occasionally sidelining him, the financial reward may have allowed him to breathe a little easier. The fellowship also seems to have a certain cachet, so maybe it would bring wider attention to him. I was speaking more as strictly a fan. When I see deserving musicians such as George Cables not getting recognized, I get incredibly frustrated and then find myself thinking, 'Well, why did so-and-so get this award?' and it can spiral into a pretty negative place. Anyway, I actually have a trip to New York planned for this month that was specifically planned around seeing Mr. Beautiful himself at the Vanguard. To see him lead a trio in that space is going to be special. That's a nice one. I'm a sucker for the Metropole Orchestra dates I've heard. The Lee Konitz one captures his sound well and brings to mind some of the times I saw him perform.
  8. Sign me up. Every time I hear the Vanguard set, it sounds fresh. I didn't expect more Coltrane with Dolphy to surface.
  9. I've meant to hear this one and was reminded to order it after confusing another fine Chicago pianist named John (Campbell) with Young. I finally bought an album by yet another Chicago pianist, Bob Dogan, whose work with vibraphonist Jim Cooper (including two albums with the great Ira Sullivan) I've enjoyed. I was saddened to discover that Dogan died in February 2020.
  10. Disc 2. It's one of life's great mysteries why George Cables isn't an NEA Jazz Master. I know that it is pointless to get upset over awards, but still...
  11. I'm listening to a live gig of Chicago tenor player Ron Dewar with Lin Halliday. https://archive.org/details/rondewar1980-08-27
  12. Oooh, I'm intrigued based on the company he keeps. Thanks for bringing him to my attention.
  13. My daughter and I happened to be in Akron at the same time a record store was open. I snagged these for a grand total of $12. It ended up being a really nice, small haul. I always enjoyed Michael Feldman's show and wish I had attended a taping. This is only my second Mariano album. Now if only I could find the other one, which is another trio but with Philip Catherine instead of Mazur. With Wallace Roney, Ralph Moore, Steve Coleman, Robin Eubanks, James Williams and Robert Hurst anf Kenyatte Abdur-Rahman. I've seen them all except for Abdur-Rahman, who was new to me, and the Williams, whose early death was a terrible loss. Forman's recent Reunion!, in which he, John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton play their mentors' (Kessel, Brown and Manne) instruments, has become a favorite guitar album of mine. With Bobby Hutcherson guesting and George Cables on piano, this was another great find.
  14. From the Bee Hive Mosaic. What a voice! This just be a perfect vocal album.
  15. I had to check the date on that one and was surprised to see it was from 1993. There's a 1995 Art Davis album, but I wonder at what point Herbie stopped regularly recording as a sideman.
  16. I only discovered Rosengren's music recently, enjoying Summit Meeting, a date that he co-led with Nisse Sandstrom. I'll be checking out more of his work. Thank you for the music, Mr. Rosengren, and rest in peace.
  17. I saw him 5 times with Wayne, but only maybe 3 times as a leader, the last time being 5 or 6 years ago.
