  1. I think that I may have forgotten (or never knew?) that Danilo Perez worked with Dizzy. This recent acquisition prompted me to snag a ticket to see him next month.
  2. I dream that in an alternate universe, Burrell was in Duke's band as a featured soloist and vocalist.
  3. Trumpeter Ian Carey also is an artist. He did this cover for his album, for example.
  4. Chicago saxophonist Othello Anderson is an artist and a fine alto player.
  5. My daughter is 5 and a budding Duke fan. She has made up lyrics to the tune of 'C Jam Blues', sung along with 'What Am I Here For?', played air clarinet and mouthed wah-wah sounds to plunger-muted trombone. Her preschool is winding up the year and had a dance party. She asked her teacher to play 'Bunny Hop Mambo'. I love her madly.
  6. Contrabass flute, which was surprisingly my guess. https://www.prowinds.com/product/JCF1000/Bass_and_Contrabass_Flutes?utm_source=google&utm_medium=surfaces&utm_campaign=Surfaces Shopping&utm_content=google surfaces shopping
  7. I suggested a complete set of Grant Green's Club Mozambique material, as that single disc is so damn funky. Unfortunately, they only had a bunch of rough mixes and not the complete set of tapes and Bob Belden selected the best takes. I confess that I'd still love to hear whatever they have, though.
  8. I'm listening to some live tracks and demos that Jack Wilkins had on his now-disabled website. He had 50 demos and live tracks available for streaming, with 10 of those available for free download. I can't get any of the streaming tracks to play on the archive site, but at least I have an hourlong sampler.
  9. I didn't know about his health issues and had been hoping to catch him in New York one day. I wish I had known about the fundraiser. Thank you for the music, Mr. Wilkins, and rest in peace.
  10. The three of us of all have avoided Covid so far, although my wife works in healthcare and had to wear a mask until only recently. I am shocked that my daughter didn't bring it home from preschool. In the fall, what I first suspected to be Covid or the flu ended up being a nasty infection that perforated my eardrum. I don't think my hearing has been the same since. As I'm fully vaccinated, I would've preferred Covid.
  11. I found this on Discogs for $20. I've heard them all before and only have low-quality downloads of two volumes, one glitched, so I'm excited to have it all in good quality. Taking advantage of cheap shipping for add-ons, I looked for bargains and added on these 3 for less than $5 and another buck for shipping.
  12. I am 41. My first Mosaic purchase would have been around 2005 when I bought the Paul Chambers Select. I'm now at around 35 full sets, 13 Selects, 6 Singles and 35 discs of partial sets, with a few more downloads from the Capitol Vaults series.
  13. This anecdote is unrelated, but you reminded me of it, so here we go. I once attended a Q&A with Jimmy Heath and an elderly man for some inexplicable reason asked Heath whatever happened to The World's Greatest Jazz Band. Heath responded, 'Who, the Modern Jazz Quartet?'
  14. I recently lobbied Scott Wenzel for a set of Mary Lou Williams' work with Andy Kirk. It'd to be great to have it all in one place, properly remastered.
  15. You have to overlook some growling from Bud that is prominent in the mix, but I like this one.
  16. With Ron Carter's birthday tomorrow, this is first up.
  17. I wasn't around during the CTI days, but I still have and enjoy several albums with Don Sebesky's work. Thank you for the music, Mr. Sebesky, and rest in peace.
  18. Ah, man. 'Big Alice' is such a fun tune that I'm disappointed all of the alternates won't be on the CD version. I'll pass.
  19. I caught him live twice when he was touring in support of Blue Moon and both times were memorable. I had always hoped to see him perform again. Thank you for the music, Mr. Jamal, and rest in peace.
  20. I hadn't heard this one in years, but I correctly remembered that it is excellent.
  21. I saw some concerts listed from Nighttown, a local club that has since (temporarily?) closed. Unfortunately, those appearances preceded my move to the Cleveland area (and interest in jazz). That site is quite the resource!
  22. I don't understand the obsession here with Kenny G's marital misfortunes, as many here delighted in news of his divorce. Regardless of what you think of his music, it's not a good look.
