  1. I completely agree about the Jaspar comment..... It's really a shame he wasn't that well known... quote=Dave James,Jul 26 2005, 12:05 AM] ..... The Johnson is among my top five instrumental Mosaics. Again, as has been mentioned elsewhere, one of the big plusses here, and one of the big surprises as well, is the tenor saxophone of Bobby Jaspar. You just don't run into him all that often and these recordings make a strong case for how good he really was. His playing is probably more well represented on this set than it is anywhere else. Up over and out. ←
  2. One of the things that surprised me about the Anita O'Day box... (since I knew nothing of her before buying it).. was that many critics said she didn't have much technical/dynamic range... (and I would agree with that assessment) AND she knew how to make all kinds of songs work both at an emotional level and a technical level... (and today with all these "wanna-be" vocalists trying constantly to do too much with a song... ) Anita often knew exactly when to accentuate and when not to.... Another of the things I really liked about the set... is that I played it pretty consecutively and never really got bored... I mean when you listen to 10 hours (in a row) of any artist it's easy to feel like it's repetitious.... but I never felt this with this set... The only other Mosaic set I felt that way about... (sorry Ron S.... I know this is on your "to buy" list and you just bit the O'Day/JJ bullett).... but it is the Elvin Jones.... Just totally interesting from 1st to last cut... Finally... I know some of this is out on individvual CDs... but I know that I wouldn't have appreciated the scope/consistency/vibrancy of her work, if I had purchased one or two individual CD's....The totality of the box feels like I've seen her in concert 6 or 7 times.. (with different settings and bands)... I just really, really liked this set.... but that's just my humble opinion...
  3. I would do one better and call them at 9:01am EST tommorrow... they're very good at that kinda stuff... 203.327.7111 good luck... and for what its' worth.... I have both and prefer the Anita....
  4. thanks for posting this.... man... I love this set....
  5. I bought my O'Day set about 2 months ago and it's #2804 of 7500... so it's clear they're running outta time.... grab it....
  6. Good man Ron... I really think you'll like the Anita
  7. speaking of updates on the web... the Jazz Crusaders is up for pre-order online.... already ordered mine....
  8. I COMPELTELY AGREE ABOUT THE O'DAY!!!!!!!!! DO IT! I bought kinda on a whim... and I LOVE it.... IMHO This is the best vocalist box they've put out by far.... And you KNOW this stuff ain't gonna get reissued.... I'm extremely happy with the O'Day..... So I'd grab it.... The JJ I have and only gave 1 spin and wasn't thrilled with it... I hope someday I'll get a better take on it.... You know the website...
  9. I think it was planned for an August release... given that there's no notice on the website... methinks probably late August.... but you can preorder by just giving them a call.... that's what I did...
  10. that's extremely well put Adam... I competely agree.. I too have made "chance" box set purchases on Mosaic (sometimes with no previous knowledge about the artist) and I've often felt that it's a crapshoot.... 50/50.... Sometimes it's born great results... (Bud Shank), sometimes disaster (Dinah Washington)... The great/difficult thing about the Tolliver (and many other lesser-known Mosaic releases) is that much if not all of thier stuff is either not in print or extremely hard to get... (Therefore it's difficult to get the know the artist before you plunk down the $$$...) So I'm completely with you on the Select for Tolliver.... Well said.... I think it is wise they do it this way. I mean, how many people are there in the world who are willing to plunk down on 7 or 8 CDs of Charles Tolliver at once? I personally have none of this music, and look forward to getting this affordable option. But if my option were to get The Complete Charles Tolliver on Strata East, and I didn't know his music at all prior to that? ←
  11. hmmmmm... okay count me in.... Now the next magic question is, if jazzmaztazz is right and this puppy is out in October... when can we pre-order???
  12. I think a WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! may be in order !!! But since I don't own the japanese CD's.... Please tell me more about Tolliver, the Music Inc. band (who was in it), and the the live material....???
  13. thanks couw.... Just looking on CDuniverse - they've got Born to be Blue for less than $10..... guess I'll just have to save that $ I was gonna spend on e-bay on the stuff that's really not in print.... (read - upcoming PJ Trios and Tolliver Selects... Because the 1961 session is split over the two discs on the Complete Quartets release, you only miss one disk, Born to be Blue, which features the tracks with Ike Quebec. The two tunes with Patato are limited to the Mosaic set only. ← That is amazing then! $10 for the 2 CD The Complete .... + $18 for 'Born to be Blue'. I can't believe that some people are prepared to spend $350 for the Mosaic set on ebay then! (There is one on ebay on $317 with three days to go!) What is wrong with these people? There must be some Mosaic fetichists out there! Maybe some of the black boxes are made of leather! ←
  14. I missed out on the set... So help me out here - .when I bought the 2CD Complete Quartets with Sonny Clark... what am I missing from the Mosaic box is 2 cds' covering what???? (and have those been issued as single cd's?)
  15. I've been looking at the Charles Tolliver stuff over at amg.... nothing on Blue Note, Pacific Jazz or World Pacific... What the heck is going to be on that set? I see that he's released a lot of live stuff on his own label (Strata-East)... Do they work out an agreement with him to release that stuff??? But please tell they're NOT going to slice and dice and pull the stuff from the Jackie McLean box and use that??? details - details - details.....
  16. given the other discussion about the possible Charles Tolliver Select... I went back and am giving the Jackie McLean box - Disc 1 another spin... Gawd... I love this set!!!!!!!!!!
  17. hmmm... now I'm definitely intrigued..... Anyone know when we'll be able to pre-order???? Hey and when is our "official email" from Mosaic (announcing some new stuff - presumably the Crusaders box... and MAYBE those two Selects>) due? Aren't we due to get one soon?
  18. okay... I see where we might got some of his info from... jazzmatazz has got a Tolliver Select coming out in October... http://jazzmatazz.home.att.net/upcomingjazzreleases.html stilll I'ld love more info.....
  19. clearly you know something we don't know... You got some 'splaining to do....
  20. I'm curious what you initially and now think of this... This set was one I was considering when it hits "Last Chance..." so what's your take?
  21. I may have a long lost twin out there... (who spends a heckuva lot less $$ on jazz than I do...) Just something about Mobley... has never grabbed me by the labels and made me go WOW!! I can't explain it better than that... I mean he's fine.. and we'll see how I like the rest of the set... just something about his playing that doesn't make me .... now his compadre... Lee Morgan... That's a WHOLE other story... You sure you're not really from Missouri? ←
  22. thanks and I'm on IT!.... An interesting note on the reissue... on Live at the Half Note... for anyone who got it... Does track 9... "Oh you crazy moon" sound awful? IIt sounds very low.. like they were 5 feet behind the mikes... Is it just my copy/system or did someone else notice this?
