in fact, DHL / FedEx wold not even deliver it to you unless you pay the VAT + "handling fee" in advance.

That's not correct. I had CD Japan orders shipped by FedEx and received them within days without having to pay anything in advance. I got VAT invoices from FedEx after 2-4 weeks.

I wish Pim luck with his order, but I'd be surprised if he'd receive it tax-free.

Well I’ve placed a pretty big order. If I would have ordered trough Amazon.de, eBay and Discogs I would have paid more than 200 dollars more plus not every item was availble there. But still: most of the time what seems to good te be trough...... I keep you guys informed if this is recommendable or not. So when the order has arrived ( which is probably going to take a very, very long time) I share my experience. I have used Buyee btw. Kupiku will never be my choice again as they are more expensive, offer less options, and still have a defect website.

That sounds good, but how about VAT (21%) that is payable for orders over 22 euros and duty (payable if the total value exceeds 150 euros)? Smaller packages may slip through customs, but a large order like yours probably won't.

Depends on the contract. I’ve negotiated agreements that apply English law as governing law. I’ve also negotiated ones where if a non US party seeks to enforce a contract they have to use US law whereas if

Clear again, but I was talking about the thinking of some Americans in general, not about a specific contract situation. For example, some said they are allowed to carry guns abroad because they have the right to do so according to US law, even if the country they were visiting doesn't allow it.

It’s not a question of jurisdiction. If an artist violates his contract and an American label seeks to enforce it in a non US court, and if there is reciprocity between the two countries, speaking generally, the non US court will allow the label to pursue the matter.  In addition, if the contract specifies that in the event US law applies, the court will examine the applicable US law to determine the matter.

Reciprocity works both ways. A non US plaintiff can bring suits in US courts.

OK, clear, but that's not what I meant. In my experience some Americans seem to think that US law is applicable everywhere in the world even if there is no reciprocity and whether the rest of the world likes it or not, "American law above all, wherever you are"; a misunderstanding, of course - to put it mildly.

    WTF? Via Josh Marshall:

The last 48 hours have seen multiple press reports of people who appear to be federal law enforcement patrolling in the vicinity of the White House, refusing to identify who they are or what agency they represent. According to a report this afternoon from Garrett Haake of NBC News federal law enforcement officers of some kind pushed the crowd perimeter back from the White House but refused to identify themselves, what agency they represented and had removed all insignia or name plates that might identify them.

As an outsider I've refrained from commenting on what's happening, but this is now really beginning to sound creepy... What's the US descending into??

"It's a very small step to a military take over" except for:

    230 years of not ever happening;

Extremely well-trained military with an absolute understanding of what their role and position is in the system.

How long was Brazil a democracy before 1964 (serious question)? Also had the military intervened at any time in the past (also serious)?

This is nothing but TDS on the level of "Trump will stay in office regardless of the election."

These acronyms are probably easy to understand for American users here, but for non-US posters like me it's usually abracadbra - so, what does TDS stand for?

  7. We've had demonstrations here too and the authorities are worried about people not adhering to social distancing rules. So, relatively quiet compared to what you all are going through. Watched CNN yesterday and was shocked by what I saw. Maybe I shouldn't say this as a non-US citizen, but I really hope November will bring change...

    I'm jealous. :g

IIRC, I have Schnabel, Kempff 1, Wuhrer, Brendel 1, Gould and Rosen. Have probably disposed of a dozen.

Wilhelm Kempff made his first recording of Op.110 in 1936, but I assume you mean his 1951 recording.

  10. My USPS Int'l Priority Mail package from Colorado finally arrived today, after more than 4 weeks...

I’m still awaiting two CDs from Japan that were shipped through the post office in early April. DHL is the best way to go these days.

I agree. I got several packages that only took a couple of days to get here via DHL - all within the EU.

  11. I don't think anything is lost, just indefinitely delayed, especially packages that are shipped internationally. One shipment can get lost, maybe two, but so many, unlikely. I still think the air traffic problems are to blame. A package from Sweden that usually takes a few days recently took three weeks to arrive at my doorstep, and that's within the EU.

I'm still waiting for a package that was mailed by int'l priority mail from Colorado on April 24. It seems to be stuck at a USPS depot in San Francisco. No idea when it will get here, as there's hardly any transatlantic air traffic right now.

Still waiting for that package... No tracking update since April 28.

I missed out on all of these sets, but have collected Walker, Spann, and Hopkins on individual discs. Slightly off-topic (for a Betty Carter thread), but are there any recommendations for single disc overviews from Milburn and Brown? In other words, if you could only purchase one disc a piece from these two artists, what would you choose?

    Just sent you a PM.

The last one was the Rosemary Clooney CBS Radio Sessions. The Ella set was before that. There have been sets devoted to Crosby, Sarah Vaughan, Mildred Bailey, Dinah Washington, Anita O'Day, Peggy Lee and June Christy, and the Four Freshmen, plus the Blues/R&B sets, so a number have been given over to vocalists.

The Blues/R&B sets were the ones by T-Bone Walker, Amos Milburn, Charles Brown and Otis Spann/Lightning Hopkins. Great sets, love them.
