  1. Didn't know her and unfortunately don't remember her posts (haven't visited this board very often since I quit as a mod years ago), but this is all very sad and disturbing, someone dying so young. Somehow it feels like losing a friend.

Thanks for posting the Dutch message (now deleted).

Hans, search Cyrille Stephan on Facebook and that should link you to her homepage. A friend of hers makes mention of her passing.

Thanks Tom, found her homepage, but didn't see any mention; maybe it can only be seen by Facebook friends of hers.

  3. Watched the documentary on BBC4 last night and for the most part enjoyed it, but some things noted above bothered me too, such as the "asynchronization" of some images and music Larry pointed out. What especially bothered me was the fact that the (pre first Quintet) early 1950s and the "transition era" between Kind of Blue/Someday My Prince Will Come and the 1960s Quintet were ignored, and the relatively little time that was spent on the 1960s Quintet. The pseudo-Miles voice-over didn't come across very well either.

Savoy issued a master takes package of the Savoy and Dial material. Find one and buy it.

It's a Savoy 3CD-set and unfortunately out of print. Chuck is right, get it if you find one - it's this one:

The Complete Savoy & Dial Master Takes by Charlie Parker (2002-09-24)

Chris (Hardbop) wasn't a bad guy. I met him a couple of times in person down in New York and I'm friends with him on Facebook. He just happened to like Wynton Marsalis, who we all know is a lightning rod and that brought him into direct conflict with Chris Albertson, which resulted in massive arguments. I always blamed Chris Albertson way more than Hardbop for that stuff.

Ah yes, I remember now what the "problem" was. Add to that that Chris always said exactly what he thought in no uncertain terms, which often rubbed some members the wrong way.

You’re probably not the first one who has done this. Over at Hoffman and another non music forum I belong to, you only have a certain amount of time in which to edit or delete a post.

At Hoffman you have 30 minutes to edit or delete a post. Works fine. Over here one or two disgruntled members (including one who's now deceased) deleted their posts and threads long after they were posted - I once deleted a thread because the discussion got very unpleasant and got a lot of flak for doing so :). Personally, I prefer the Hoffman option.

Most of the Impulses I have are mid-nineties digipacks with a very good sound reissued by MC. They are a reissue series I still consider to this day to be top-notch.

I got a lot of those 1990s digipaks that were mastered by Erick Labson, but didn't really like them; they're not bad, but compared with the 32XD and MVCI CDs the highs are too pronounced to my ears.

I didn't buy many of those 32XD CDs back in the day. If my memory isn't failing me, the "32" was shortened from 32,000 as in 32,000 Yen - the list price. That was a lot of US dollars back then. And yes, 55XD meant 55,000 Yen.

Wow, that's crazy! That's about $30 and $50 per CD.

I'm glad many Japanese reissues are only 1,000 Yen these days.

I regularly imported CDs from Japan for my own collection and "32XD" meant that the list price was 3200 yen, not 32,000; likewise, 55XD meant 5500 yen, not 55,000 - a not insignificant difference :)

  9. Most of my impulse! titles are MVCI CDs, some are 32XD releases and German equivalents. When a title I wanted wasn't available in those series, I got a later reissue. Many years ago I compared some of the 1987 and 1991 discs to post-1991 reissues of the same titles and always preferred the former.

I think that there is something to be said for "The Mosaic Treatment." I have all of the individual CDs but I'll still be inclined to get the Mosaic set. What can i say?

I also have the individual cd's and intend to get the Mosaic set.  I find that the collation, remastering,  and contextualization makes a tremendous difference for me as a listener.

I have all of the individually-reissued CDs, but I'll still bite on a Mosaic.

Same here, I have all of Lee Morgan's 1960s Blue Notes (listened to all of them again these last few days :o), but I'm still getting the Mosaic if/when it comes out. Also got the 1960s Mobley, although I have the individual CDs.
