  1. Regardless of what you might think Page is, he still masterminded one of the most successful rock bands of all time. Whether they were the best is a topic for another time, another forum. Anyway, my point is that there are no masterminds today, or anytime within the last few decades. No bands putting out superior music played by superior musicians. No touring bands that you just HAVE to see. Btw, despite the protests of Ray Davies and Pete Townshend, who do you think played geetar on some of those early Kinks and Who sides?
  2. Why is it odd? There is no ignorance. I've heard it. I don't like it. It's not an age thing. It's a time thing. I no longer hope I die before I get old. I want to get old listening to good music, that's all. Besides, this is kind of informative, no? It's especially interesting to hear a 31 year old Clifford rhapsodize about rock when he didn't live through its bread and butter period.
  3. Certainly couldn't hurt to ask, although those in the know say that Cuscuna will NEVER change his mind about the so-called train wreck session.
  4. Still, dudes (and dudettes), where are today's stars (and I do not mean stars in the mass media sense)? And what exactly are today's brilliant tunes? I agree that Page live (while high on whatever) never sounded good to me. But glorified session player? I think not. Clapton may have only sounded good in good bands, but last I looked, music is STILL predominantly a TEAM sport! sjfarrell - I am far from a hippie -- just a baby boomer like you. The only difference is that I have been listening to music since I was three, in a place -- NYC -- where I was exposed to any and all types of music. I have literally seen - and heard -- it all, and learned at a very early age not to mistake technical brilliance for actual brilliance. Btw, SRV is worth a listen if you like good blues rock.
  5. I'll disagree with that. Though I'd love to see (and would surely enjoy) Fripp & Bruford playing like that. You're certainly entitled to your opinion. As far as hearing what I've described, just break out "Starless and Bible Black".

  7. Sounds like you and I go to shows for different reasons, or maybe you're still stuck in your late teens. Anyway, I wasn't talking about today's Crim, which couldn't hold a candle to Fripp sitting on a stool crosspicking "Fracture" while Bruford bangs away behind him.
  8. Another problem in today's music. There are no star instrumentalists or songwriters with whom we can identify, like back in the heyday. Nobody can play like Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Beck, SRV, et al. Nobody can write songs like Lennon, McCartney, Townshend, et al. That being said, I realized a long time ago that the pool has simply dried up. The best of the best has already happened. Why bother looking for more? "Dig deep", says Cliff. Why? I don't need to. There's so much history in jazz and other music to explore. If the mood strikes me to listen to rock, I keep going back to the stuff that done me right in the first place. Groups like U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Coldplay just plain leave me cold. And Green Day is for 12 year olds. They sound like they're stuck doing the Clash doing early Who.
  9. The main thing missing from rock music for at least the last 25 years is MUSICIANSHIP!!! Hummable? Danceable? Who cares? Just gimme some Larks' Tongues era Crim and I'm a happy camper No thrashy games of 3 chord monty there.
  10. The question should be why CAN'T you. When the freak did they become Led Zeppelin?
  11. Right on, One and three quarters! The new shit is just that. To be honest, having 2 pre-teenage kids, I tend to like the stuff that the corporate bean-counters at Disney are pumping out more than anything that's come out of the rock world since Sting and his merrymen were do do doing the de da da
  12. And Kurt Cobain even less so. If the Beatles were an inch, Nirvana wouldn't even be a micron. And, btw, how is Sonic Youth a no-brainer? Finally, fwiw, the best rock musician I ever heard was Miles Davis!
  13. As 7/4 mentioned earlier, rock has pretty much been going downhill for at least the last 35 years. Examples can be found in the Stones, who haven't put out a good album since 1972, and in Clapton, whose guitar playing hasn't been the same since Layla. I guess it's all a matter of perspective, but that's the way I see it. So if I happen to listen to rock today, it's the same rock I enjoyed when I was 15!!! No progress has been made since then, least of all with the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and all the other grunge rockers. Even my 11 year old son and 8 year old daughter can see this!!!
  14. you mean it is not consensus that the early nineties with, say, Oasis and Nirvana were still a pretty good time in rock? Definitely not! As a matter of fact, the declaration that Kurt Cobain was the next John Lennon caused me to finally leave rock behind and seek out other forms of musical enjoyment.
  15. It seems to be available here: http://www.worldsrecords.com/cgi-bin/store...=06-19-08.22082
  16. All 5 are now finally priced at $11.18 at CD Universe. Whew -- am I worn out
  17. I've been trying hard to get them to realize that classifying 4 of the 5 (excluding "Smithville") as imports is in fact incorrect. Got an email from them this morning that they have lowered the price of "Head On", and are currently reviewing the others. I have a feeling that they will come to see things "our" way. When they do, just give them a call on their toll free number (1-800-231-7937) and they will either credit you or refund the price difference. I think that they have a price protection policy for 2 weeks or so from shipping date.
  18. Yeah, being a New Yawka has gotten me used to many things in life, not the least of which is the consistent one-day turnaround on Mosaic deliveries from right next door
  19. Set #32 received yesterday!!! Also finally took the plunge and got the Prima/Manone at the same time -- set #1579. Apparently, it didn't sell that well before it timed out.
  20. Yes it is. Includes the only studio sides of the Braxton/Crispell/Dresser/Hemingway quartet plus two discs of a live concert. I'm happy they're reissuing this as I missed out on it the first time. On a related note, does anyone know how many 2 cd sets are in the Leo "Coventry" series of concerts by this quartet?
  21. Does anybody know of a retailer (preferably in the US) where either or both of these boxed sets can be purchased? Any help would be appreciated.
