  1. if that's the case (as I mentioned above) then there are two versions of 6/8(Jungla) on the EP - the total EP (6 sides) time is longer than the LP
  2. The original Afro-Cuban Suite released by Machito's Orchestra (Composed/conducted by Chico O'Farrill) was released on a Mercury 10" (505) & ran for approximately 17 mins (fits with the full track from the Charlie Parker Verve box set plus the reissue Verve LP I both have) Cancion, Mambo, 6/8, Jazz, Rhumba Abierta (Machito 10") =? Manteca Theme, Contraste, Jungla, Rhumba Finale (Gillespie's Afro) The Gillespie Afro version runs for a similar amount of time (just under 17 mins) - I presume 6/8 was part of this but not listed on the LP. I don't think 6/8 was extra material
  3. If that's the case then it's on the EP set twice https://www.discogs.com/release/12735433-Dizzy-Gillespie-And-His-Orchestra-Afro also, is it possible to get 12 minutes onto a single EP side? (Contraste/Jungla/Rhumba Finale)
  4. I've just noticed that Afro (Norgran 1003 - later released in 56 as Manteca on Verve 8208) was also originally released as a 3EP (7")(EP N-2002-3) set. It appears to have an extra track titled "6/8" that looks like it's never been released anywhere else AFAIK - LP or CD. Some discographies list it as unreleased & other list it as part of the original LP. Anyone out there with a copy of the triple EP set? I'm surprised the Andorrans havn't added this track to one of their DG releases. https://www.discogs.com/release/12735433-Dizzy-Gillespie-And-His-Orchestra-Afro This EP does exist as it turns up on auction sites https://www.popsike.com/DIZZY-GILLESPIE-AFRO-1954-Norgran-3-EP-NM-Beauty-Norman-Granz-SUPERB/200761522515.html
  5. Thanks I'd forgotten that Chuck was involved with those early Delmark releases
  6. Contacted Honest Jons last week & they're able to obtain it for me - just waiting for its arrival - I'm going to order a couple of double LPs (HJ's/Incus reissue twofer LPs with extra material) to even out the significant shipping cost to Australia - the book could probably be used as an anchor, it's so heavy
  7. was going to suggest Trunk Records for the Hum Dono LP - Johnny Trunk released it once the Dutton Vocalion LP went OOP - pressing got good reviews Just checked the site & it looks like that one has gone too - poor Joe!!! https://trunkrecords.greedbag.com/buy/hum-dono-6/
  8. Dutton Vocalion has released a swathe of Harriott related material (on CD & one LP) but unfortunately all that's left is the High Spirits/Movement twofer & The Don Carlos Orch https://www.duttonvocalion.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=2CDSML8486 https://www.duttonvocalion.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=CDNJT5324 Harriott - Movement/High Spirits (Quintet) Harriott & Amancio D'Silva - Hum Dono (CD & LP) One of the essential UK jazz releases Michael Garrick - Poetry & Jazz In Concert/Before Night-Day (Quintet), October Woman (Quintet), Black Marigolds (Septet), Promises (Sextet) Tony Kinsey Quintet - Jazz At The Flamingo Lita Roza with The Tony Kinsey Quartet - Listening In The After-Hours George Chisholm - Chis: The Art Of George Chisholm (octet) Melody Maker All Stars - Presenting Kenny Graham Don Carlos Orchestra - Crazy Latin
  9. Free Form, Abstract, Hum Dono with early material on the double CD compilation Killer Joe plus Michael Garrick Quintet (October Woman) & Septet (Black Marigolds)
  10. just found this wonderful rendition of "In A Sentimental Mood" by Joe Harriott with The Stan Tracey Big Brass (1969) - is this the same version from the Columbia LP "We Love You Madly"? - sounds like it. Apparantly this is the only known live footage of Joe. also, a few Harriott related clippings from newspapers https://galacticramble.blogspot.com/search/label/Joe Harriott
  11. twas called "Rare Tracks" released in 1975 (UK) & here in Australia in 1980 - love the Jethro Tull single "Sunshine Day" mislabelled as Jethro Toe It's actually quite a good comp from the time https://www.discogs.com/release/1348392-Various-Rock-Legends-Rare-Tracks Picked up my Triple Echo set when one of our Brisbane FM radio stations 4ZZZ went digital & offloaded all of their vinyl (late 80's?) The Valentines are highly sought after by collectors here in Australia plus the group Fraternity (Flaming Galah) where Bon Scott was a flute playing hippy before he changed his image to a hard rocker https://www.discogs.com/release/4881588-Fraternity-Flaming-Galah Kevin Ayers voice is one of the defining features of the Soft Machine that I gravitate towards (have all of his solo material) - his french version of May I (Puis Je?) is superb To me The Softs are Wyatt/Ayers & Allen
  12. both tracks were added on the 2009 UK reissue of the first LP this is my favourite softs period - Allen, Wyatt & Ayers +/- Ratledge/Hopper https://www.discogs.com/release/2378052-The-Soft-Machine-The-Soft-Machine
  13. Love Makes Sweet Music / Feelin' Reelin' Squealin' - UK Polydor 7" https://www.discogs.com/release/445900-The-Soft-Machine-Love-Makes-Sweet-Music-Feelin-Reelin-Squeelin https://www.discogs.com/release/2033931-Soft-Machine-Faces-And-Places-Vol-7
  14. Agreed, I thought this was one of the most comprehensive single musician reference texts when I received my copy over 10 years ago but for me this has now been surpassed by the Rick Lopez Magnum Opus "The Sam Rivers Sessionography"
  15. https://theafterword.co.uk/labyrinth-british-jazz-on-record-1960-75-by-richard-morton-jack/ https://www.elvinyl.com/listings/3939843-books-for-sale?fbclid=IwAR0uPv70f2J92wnHy02Vzz_ynCr04fG1JBPKiDmZy0SNLATxWNm4SQ-VSvw coincidently I just ordered I've also sent a message to Honest Jon's asking if they intend to carry Labyrinth
  16. Even though it's less "Jazz Rock" I'm partial to the very early Softs (proto Gong) Daevid Allen/Kevin Ayers/Robert Wyatt +/- Ratledge & Hopper - much more anarchic & lyric laden - most reissues (primarily live concerts) appear to revolve around the early to mid 70s
  17. many thanks, account created (easy as) & just spent 2 hours perusing plus taken screen shots of the book. Excellent analysis with the vast majority of this material now on CD/digital media Wonder if Cook & Morton used this as a primary reference source for their ratings especially the crowns/5 stars
  18. Just saw this post - I can't believe it, first Tony Oxley & now Martin Davidson - I communicated with Martin over the years re UK jazz & his emanem (not the rap artist!!) releases. He even lived here in Australia for a few years in the 80s. You'll be missed so much!! RIP Martin
  19. I'm shocked - too soon!!! RIP Tony just checked my iTunes library & I have him on over 33 hours of recordings (mostly vinyl/CD that I've transferred to iTunes), starting at Joseph Holbrooke & running up to Birdland 2011 with CT (hadn't picked up "Beaming" yet from 2019) such a superb musician
  20. I'll definitely be opting for the CD version
  21. thanks Mike - I actually used that discography - btw it hasn't been updated with the Monk Byas Rosencrantz Mosaic session
  22. has the Giants of Jazz (Gillespie, Winding, Stitt, Monk, McKibbon, Blakey) Euro/UK tour of Oct-Nov '71 been mentioned? Only half of the material recorded in the UK concert (Victoria Theatre, London) for Atlantic (10 of 20 titles) has been released - does the unreleased material still exist or was it lost in the 2008 fire? There were also recordings in Milan (RAI Radio broadcast), Paris (both concerts were ORTF recorded broadcasts), Prague, Warsaw, Budapest, Belgrade (JRT Radio broadcast), Rotterdam (NOS Radio broadcast), Berlin, Boblingen (Sudwestfunk broadcast), Copenhagen (Danish Broadcasting Corporation), Uppsala - much has been previously released on semi/non-legit labels plus the outlier is the earlier Australian (Melbourne, Sept 24) performance (ABC Radio broadcast) I'm sure these concerts were well attended but were the performers generally up to scratch - have read mixed reviews of these concerts
  23. immediately conjured up an image of Noddy Holder 😂
  24. There are almost 55 minutes (6 tracks) of Monk over two discs in the Byas Mosaic - Kirk (Kirt) plays on 5 of the 6 tracks. The final track (Sweet Georgia Brown - 9mins+)has Kirt as the only saxophonist with Monk as a trio with bass. There are also two further Autumn 44 tracks with Monk replaced by Teddy Brannon, both with Kirt, Don & Lucky (Body & Soul, Cherokee). His alto is quite audible & prominent that'll need to be updated since the release of the Byas Mosaic
