  1. yep, they've reissued the 3LP Playhouse set (500 more copies) essential HT/PAPA release IMHO

  3. many thanks Mark - what a diverse range of material covering 13 years of Birds live output I've created the ordered playlist on my iTunes & am currently listening, BTW I actually have 19 of the 21 recordings you list
  4. one of my more recent Melle finds was on the Creel Pone/Alpha State label (yes, I know it may not be legit) - it's a double CD covering his three "electronica" releases from 68-71 ie Tome IV (Verve), Waterbirds (Nocturne) & The Andromeda Strain (Kapp) both 10" & 12" versions https://alphastate.nyc/products/gil-melle-the-andromeda-strain?_pos=1&_sid=a21186b41&_ss=r
  5. The Montgomery Riverside box has 12/14 tracks - only missing tracks are 1. alt #1 of S.O.S. 2. Released version of Full House but with the original Wes solo (from that take) reinserted & the other excised will pass on this one
  6. we used to watch it here in Australia in the 60s - I always preferred David to Robert RIP
  7. big shout out for the live Masadas Also Derek Bailey (includes Joseph Holbrooke Trio & Tony Oxley) & of course any Milford Graves
  8. another outstanding graphic novel is the Monk effort by Youssef Daoudi https://www.amazon.com/Monk-Thelonious-Pannonica-Friendship-Revolution/dp/1626724342/ref=sr_1_2?crid=340X52AK132R5&keywords=thelonious+monk&qid=1695684713&s=books&sprefix=thelonious+mon%2Cstripbooks-intl-ship%2C458&sr=1-2 There's an Albert Ayler graphic novel in the works being undertaken by Dean Westerfield - he's also a fan of Tapscott/Arkestra (see link) https://angelcityjazz.com/explorations/westerfield/
  9. been doing that for years The recording of this historic concert is presented in its entirety for the first time in this edition. The remastered original tapes have been used to produce this CD, ensuring excellent sound quality. With little publicity and only one star arrived from America, Miles Davis, Bruno Coquatrix, owner and manager of the Olympia, accomplished an impressive feat by presenting a sold-out concert on Saturday, November 30, 1957, at 6 p.m. André Hodeir in Jazz Hot had written, "This concert by Miles Davis was one of the most beautiful jazz concerts we have ever heard in Paris. Brilliantly supported by Kenny Clarke, René Urtreger, Pierre Michelot, and Barney Wilen, the great trumpeter gave the best of himself in many passages." The producer and owner of this recording was the late jazz promoter Marcel Romano, who brought Miles Davis to Paris. After more than 60 years in storage, Romano’s nephew and heir discovered the tapes and sold them to Fresh Sound Records for a commercial release. The music on this album is a magnificent testament to Miles Davis’ engaging and captivating style, showcasing his unrivaled ability to push his peers beyond their limits and share his boundless creativity and inspiration with them, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts and minds. —Jordi Pujol

    Albert Ayler

wow!! is this the only known footage of the 66 euro tour band? Thanks Pim interesting comment on youTube "At the very end, we can see the future prime minister of France (Jacques Chaban-Delmas")
  12. Thanks James (got your email too), what a coincidence indeed re Fresh Sound Also sorry bout the Accardi vs Riccardi confusion It's already available via Fresh Sound https://www.freshsoundrecords.com/philly-joe-jones-albums/56771-live-at-birdland-historic-unreleased-1962-recordings.html
  13. had it on my wants list at Dusty Groove since it appeared on the site have previously picked up the two Jef Gilson/Malagasy (Malagasy & At Newport-Paris) SouffleContinu CDs (originally on the Lumen/Palm labels)
  14. wonder if it will come with the CD of previously unreleased material ? (some has been released on Dark Tree since)
  15. sure does - listened to the set twice now - like the musical organisation of each disc, Hank or Trane on discs 1 & 2 (sextet & quintet). The two quintet sessions (Quintets & Cool Struttin' - Dec 57, Feb 58) fit nicely onto disc 4 with trio material on discs 3 & 5. Leapin' & Lopin' comprises disc 6.
  16. had my copy since November 2022 & it sits permanently beside my computer workbench - a tremendous (& heavy!!) production with a lot of love & effort behind it.
  17. RIP Robbie - off to The Big Pink House in the sky
  18. friend of mine found a stack of these (jazz/blues) books at his local markets - I chose a few from him - 50s/60s/70s publications - lots of reading
  19. Am enjoying this immensely (3/4 way through now) & the book structure (roughly chronological but random topics, not at all heavy on music theory). His vignettes are fascinating, favourites are time in Vietnam plus meeting Coltrane & Ellington. The Hubkaphone discussions mention (p 210) a live LP recorded in 2003 at Engine 27, NYC where Henry prerecords his hubkaphone (at the venue) then plays it back (at varying octaves) during his Zooid's performance. I'd never heard of this release - Pop Start The Tape, StoP on the Hardedge label release #1 in 2005 in edition of 1000. I found the Hardedge website via Discogs & you wouldn't believe it, there are still copies left in 2023 - scored one & am listening now - the Hubkphone features prominently. The website has glitches for purchasing so you have to order via email (contact Velibor) details on website https://www.hardedge.net/catalog https://www.discogs.com/release/4162996-Henry-Threadgills-Zooid-Pop-Start-The-Tape-Stop
  20. won't there be space when you divest yourself of your individual Clark CDs (I'm sure you'd have some)
  21. Wow!! Six days to Australia via Fedex - what a difference to the previous abysmal shippers (Asendia) Excellent sound & the booklet is a stunner, packed with Wolff's images - I'm sure there's a few here that havn't been previously published (Wolff books, LP/CD sleeves/liner notes etc). Enjoyed Blumenthal's informative notes.
  22. I asked MC back in the 90s for a Hutcherson set but he thought it would be difficult to find a cutoff point (I suggested a few & he thought it was reasonable but it never came to be) - this is way before the release of the 70s Select set. He was interested so maybe now with the new revival of BN Mosaics he may actually go for a Hutch set.
  23. the Chambers/Kelly set has one & a half CDs of the Frank Strozier Quintet with the amazing Booker Little including a couple of previously unreleased alts - one of the main reasons I picked up the box was to have all of the Strozier/Little material in one place
  24. reply from Michael via Tom Lord - I presume nut = but Hi Stephen, Here’s Cuscuna’s reply: “News to me, nut entirely possible. There were Blue Note geeks lurking in BN offices across the planet!” I have put the German release in the footnote to session #P865. Thanks, Tom
