  1. I do a lot of headphone listening. I did recently give my brother my Senns because I no longer cared for the sound, but headphone listening can be addicting (while also necessary in my case for marital harmony). For everyday use, I love my Beyerdynamic DT880s. I also have Grado SR60s and SR125s. I was recently blessed with good fortune, though, and I now have a pair of Joe Grado's own HP-1000s (H-2 model): I also tend to like the canal phones for on the go and like the Etymotics (Shure's main competitor). I have a pair of HF5s and they are fantastic (and relatively inexpensive, all things being equal). Hard to beat those Grado SR60s, which were a gateway for me.
  2. Yet another crap article - don't people realize that the point of that original article was to drive traffic to the site? How many of you had ever been to that site before that article? http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=146&p=11482&title=are_major_labels_about_to_abandon_the_cd_1&more=1&c=1
  3. I had the same exact issue. I will say this - I would never EVER buy a NAD product again after my experience. No doubt the reason that it is taking so long as there are too many other units ahead of yours.
  4. I am looking for a bit of advice. I like the idea that these streaming services exist, well, at least for me, as an opportunity to check out music before I buy "the real thing." I certainly have and continue to buy a ridiculous amount of music like most people here. I have seen lots of posts about Spotify (which I have been enjoying free for some time now) but I want to obtain a subscription so that I can use it on my mobile device, as well as on my Sonos system. I did a search and was unable to find anything really comparing sound quality, as well as depth of catalog, especially when comparing services. I have recently signed up for a trial of Rdio and it is rather impressive (and they have a nice ipad app, unlike Spotify). As for comparing Spotify to Rdio, I did a a test search for David Binney, Barry Guy, Peter Brotzmann and Tim Warfield (the first four names that came into my head) and it looks like Rdio may have the edge. It certainly seems that more Criss Cross titles are on Rdio than Spotify. So, basically, I am wondering if anyone has done any real comparison between the services. My primary concerns are 1) catalog depth (primarily Jazz) and decent sound quality. Any thoughts are appreciated.
  5. I joined the Hoffman board recently and it's more of a comedy than anything else. I don't think those guys ever actually listen to music, they just sit there with 17 different versions of the same album and keep switching them back and forth, trying to find the right one....then they stop to swap out speaker cables, perform some witchcraft over their tubes...then argue their findings for 50 pages. You are 100% correct. Unfortunately, some of them have now come over here and want to discuss the 11,000th remastering of The Sidewinder (OMG - Steve Hoffmann "rescued the precious master tapes!!!!" which of course, Ron McMaster just had used a few months earlier for the LP remasters) when most of us remember talking about how lucky we were to have any of this material out at all at the old Blue Note board with Tom Evered. Besides, the Hoffmannites are spending $50 per Blue Note 45RPM LP title for music they have never previously heard before, for a reissue program that hasn't used him as a mastering engineer for well over a year. It's hilarious, actually.
  6. Thanks for posting the list of tour dates. Been an Opeth fan for some time, though I feel they are starting to become less and less interesting. I think losing Martin Lopez really changed the chemistry of the instrumental aspects of the band. Also, way too many "clean" vocals. Some of the cuts on Watershed were an embarrassment in my opinion (the opening song was like some sort of awful Ozzy/Lita Ford duet). Then again, I am partial to tracks like "Wreath" and "Ghost Of Perdition" from the previous records. On the other hand, bands like Enslaved really are keeping things interesting on the prog metal front (though, with Enslaved being more "Black" than "Death"). I have high hopes for Heritage, though the reference to Alice Cooper as being an influence could be very, very bad.
  7. Must be my lucky day, cuz I just spotted this one in a store that has no emphasis on jazz whatsoever for $6.99; I'm running back there first thing tomorrow morning to buy it!!!!! I always like that bit of luck. I check the hell out of Reckless Records' website, which is mostly indie rock but carries a lot of jazz; they price their Miles & Coltrane rather competitively but anything else is fair game. I've walked away with OOP stuff and Mosaics for a steal. This is why I never shop there anymore - people like you buy all the good stuff! Here here on the Crisis! reissue with extra tracks (will never happen). Just think - Complete Impulse! Sessions...
  8. I have a Sonos system as part of my network and I love it. Attach it to a good DAC (I have a Benchmark DAC1, for example) and you are in business. It truly is idiot proof and contains a very robust network mesh. Only drawback is that it does not currently support hi-rez playback and has a 64K track limit. I imagine that will no longer be a problem in time (not really an issue for me ... yet).
  9. Wait a minute, did you say that Sarah Palin is attractive? I was not aware.
  10. Whatever you love and enjoy (and know very, very well). No magic disc will guide you. Trust your ears.
  11. Definitely not the album of the year or best put out by ECM this year; however, it is certainly a grower and a solid effort.
  12. They have a couple of recent reissues, plus literally within the last month, Wolfgang Dauner's Et Cetera's Knirsch. Can't answer the question, though.
  13. Thanks, Bev. Great news. I first heard of them due to the Bruford/Earthworks connection in the mid 80's and have a few of their records from "back in the day". I am sorry that their material isn't available because it really was fantastic. Hopefully, this CD will be somewhat easy to get over here (are you listening Dusty Groove????) because I am sure that they were monstrous live.
  14. Song is a few weeks old, but I'd have to say that the lyrics video is better, imho.
  15. That's because the predominant attitude in Western society is: why should I pay for anything if I can get it for free? Just ask Allen or any other artist about their CD sales, for example. Anyway, as to paying for a magazine and its value, I would rather pay for smart criticism where I know that the writers have a level of competence and aptitude than the other end of a spectrum. Many "online" writers are dreadful. This writer is obviously a joke, but I would caution people that are so quick to write off every critic so blindly. Does that mean that no one pays attention to, say, Larry Kart, John Corbett, Kevin Whitehead or Ken Dryden to name just a few, anymore? Sorry for sidetracking your thread, Allen. You did notice the smiley, right? For the record, I did...but I think that line of thought is pretty much spot on for a lot of folks. I have certainly heard it.

  17. This is SOP. Come on, Allen, did you forget that check you sent me for the Jews In Hell review? Besides, doesn't anyone read Bob Rusch's Cadence & You column?
  18. Awful. A legend and a big musical inspiration.
  19. What a pain ! I do not have any direct experience with MMFs or to be honest, the P1. Regardless, I wanted to add my $.02 to tell you that I have had a P3 for about five years once I decided that I wanted to go back and enjoy my vinyl and it has brought me countless hours of pleasure. While I have fought upgraditis several times, I still come back to the P3 and have no regrets. I think Rega makes an excellent, reliable product for each price point (though I can't speak for their new "high end" gear). There is a reason that Rega tables and the RB arms have been enjoyed by so many people over the years. Plus, and this is key for me, I don't have to spend countless hours "tweaking".
