  1. It's a good thing for me, unless the record label is called Jazz At Lincoln Center. Nice cross-section of music, though.
  2. Do either have a built in crowd? I've never been to either, so it is hard to tell. Reggie's Music Joint appears to be livelier, but you are playing over people eating (and it is still rock oriented). The Viaduct is considerably harder to find, but maybe it fills up. At least people would be coming for the music. I know the Empty Bottle is even more off the beaten path, but it has a very devoted crowd. They may not be options, but Andy's, the New Checkerboard Lounge or The Hideout would be better. Possibly Schubas (not that they book "jazz" though). Reggie's is a rock venue and there is no built-in crowd that I am aware of for the Viaduct. Your band would be best for what ejp says - Hideout for sure. What about The Hungry Brain? The Brain is around the corner from the Viaduct. Schuba's is likely a no go (though across the street from my office). Last thing I saw there jazz-related was Ken Vandermark as part of a Noise Pop thing in 2001. The Bottle doesn't do jazz anymore.
  3. I think they may be extinct. I used to have that table but had problems with it - so I got a Denon DP-60L. The added bonus is that the platter stops in the run-out groove. No need for a safety lifter
  4. FYI - I have not heard them, but have heard that they are using copies generations away from the masters. Something to keep in mind.

Anyone use this system and have any comments to offer on ease of use, reliability, general enjoyment, etc.? I am pondering at the moment. Thanks in advance.
  6. Pretty ironic that this is being discussed on a band website that supports its mission from proceeds from live shows and sales of their original music.
  7. I have a Rega P3 and a Denon 60-L, which are below your $1500 threshold. These LP reissues (the Music Matters and ORG) sound superb on both. Who can find reasonably priced, Mint originals for less than $50-60 anyway? Besides, these arguably sound better. If you love the session that much, I'd say treat yourself.
  8. Thought about it till I saw the 60 dollar price tag. That was my thought too. They are charging ORG reissue prices for this set. Yikes!
  9. Really? Does that include Tutu?
  10. Anyone buy the recent issues (I am thinking Jarrett in particular)?
  11. ...and maybe some actually good quality 'tables!
  12. So - I wonder if Ochs is garnering increased exposure from all of this (thanks Wynnie for keeping the light on). LOSADC is a great band, especially due to the presence of Scott Amendola. That guy is a MF. Besides, their last record certainly kicks the crap out of the latest Marsalis Christmas record. zzzzzzzzzz.
  13. FWIW, I have not heard these units but I did want to echo BeBop's general thoughts about North Country. I do own a Decware integrated amp (thanks for the tip many years ago Lon plus another old BNBB member) but the rest of my gear is from Vlad. If it meets his standards, I would say that you should seriously consider Atoll (and I have spoken with Vladimir many times about Atoll too). I think the French hi fi products get a bad rap for some bizarre reason in the US but the ones that I have heard are absolutely on par with those that get much more internet and glossy mag press.
  14. I am a new fan of this band, though I have heard about them for eons, of course. I never got around to them, but I bought tix to their Chicago show last month. I bought the last four records the week before to get ready and I have to say that The Incident really drew me in. I have been listening to a lot heavier music lately - like Opeth, Mastadon and Meshuggah - so I really enjoy the mix of the Crimsonesque aesthetic, alongside Floyd, classic prog traces and this progressive metal edge playing out today. I don't see that sort of range in a lot of bands. Being a fan of lengthy, complex music, I certainly loved the "first set". I am a bona fide fan for sure now and in particular, Gavin Harrison is a fantastic player. I plan on seeing them when they come back late-winter/spring. BTW - I decided with The Hazards of Love that I detest the Decemberists, after really enjoying them for the last five or so years.
  15. Bringing this up because I now have the Music Matters vinyl reissue of this. The squeak has never sounded so good as now.
  16. Wayne Shorter - JuJu (Music Matters edition)
  17. I guess actually 4 days (Jan 20-23) at the Jazz Bistro, but still that's pretty decent. I am partly waiting to see if he manages to get Chicago date around then. Anyway, I'll post in the appropriate thread closer to the time. Um - you know that his trio is playing next Friday at Symphony Center, right?
  18. Kind remarks are always appreciated. The website is about-time-records.com/ Link to AT Records Always been a big fan of Subject To Change in particular. About Time is a indeed a great label.
  19. Check out ast0r's version of "Giant Steps" here - http://8bitcollective.com/music/ast0r/gian...eps.+coltrane./ or Confirmation: http://8bitcollective.com/music/ast0r/conf...charlie+parker/ Hah - I'm with Jim.
  20. I wouldn't hold my breath hoping for FMPs and the like. I went to a bunch of these and yes, bought a lot of stuff, but there is a lot of dross, depending upon your tastes. Cliff is spot on. Plus the crowds/lines were/will be pretty over the top.
  21. This is all a fair follow-up to my comments, but the point is well taken - try before you buy. I was stating my preference from a purely subjective angle. Personally, I find the MMW and related work to be somewhat dull, but hey, I prefer his fusion or straight ahead material to the "jam band" thing. Of course, MDog might prefer this angle him/herself. BTW, I did think that This Means That was quite a nice recent release, especially for the work of the amazing Bill Stewart (see Randy's Vinnie thread).
  22. I always had a soft spot for the Gramavision funk discs and of course, the Blue Note groups with Joe Lovano. If you are looking for more groove, try the Gramavision material - Dennis Chambers just kills.
  23. Note date of article above - October 2007. The Fremer-Randi-Pear debate is old news. The fun is seeing all of the "commentary" on the internet, especially from Fremer.

    Best Of 2009

Here are a few that stood out from a recent batch of review discs: Peter Brotzman et al: Hairy Bones OKKA Rick Germanson Trio: Off The Cuff OWL (lovely paino jazz with Louis Hayes!) The Fully Celebrated: Drunk On The Blood Of The Holy Ones AUM Fidelity I also loved the newest DarkBlueWorld record (The Perilous Beauty of Madness) on Drip Audio (what is with these Vancouverites lately? They are making some wonderful records out on the coast), but it is not really a jazz record.
