  1. Great job and superb recording! Were any additional Wilson songs or sets recorded beyond what is on the album on iTunes?
  2. I've enjoyed your recording of Jack from the 1987 live gig in Canada. Can you talk about the recording process? Nice stereo mic'ing on the piano. Jack's playing is great. Was it recorded to digital or analog? Multi-track or direct to stereo two track?
  3. Check this out! Looks like Zev Feldman (of Resonance Records) is joining Blue Note. Maybe he can investigate the 1970 Jack Wilson Blue Note live recordings at Memory Lane? https://variety.com/2019/music/news/zev-feldman-blue-note-jazz-don-was-1203101919/ Excerpt below from January 2019 Variety article: Archival Music Producer Zev Feldman, the ‘Jazz Detective,’ Takes on New Blue Note Role (EXCLUSIVE) "The archival record producer who’s picked up the nickname “the Jazz Detective” is going to be putting his gumshoe skills to work for the genre’s most storied label. Zev Feldman, possibly the most widely admired archival producer working in the jazz field today, has a new gig at Blue Note Records, where he’ll work closely with label president Don Was, Variety can exclusively reveal. While the Blue Note vaults have been mined extensively over the last 30 years — with efforts largely directed by Michael Cuscuna, who similarly operated his own catalog label Mosaic Records while serving as a consultant — Feldman will focus on excavating hitherto unreleased music by Blue Note artists. The first fruits of Feldman’s detective work for Blue Note have yet to be announced, but they’ll dovetail neatly with an extensive 80th anniversary catalog campaign for the label, which kicks off in February with high-end audiophile reissues of titles by Wayne Shorter and Chick Corea, overseen by producer Joe “Tone Poet” Harley. “I have a whole list of projects I’m preparing for them right now,” Feldman says. “We’re just getting started here. I met with Don and Justin just before the break, and I had a list of 21 or 22 different projects. … I wanted to land on my feet running."
  4. Is there a way to determine if Blue Note live tapes still exist? Anyone here know Cuscuna?
  5. Any idea if the live 1970 Blue Note Memory Lane Los Angeles recordings survive in the EMI archives? Has MICHAEL CUSCUNA ever commented on these unreleased Wilson Blue Note live recordings?
  6. I don't think Fresh Sound Spain puts out legal releases of Vault (or other US labels like Argo / Cadet). They sound like they use needle drops from LPs or dubs from commercially produced 3 3/4" or 7 1/2" ips consumer pre-recorded reel to reel tapes. Check this out: Per this Amazon listing, the mysterious company "Essential Media Group LLC" has also reissued "Ramblin'" as a download. Note the cover image below with the Essential Media Group logo on the left and marketing copy claiming it has been "digitally remastered." What is this Essential Media Group stuff? A legitimate release or a bootleg? Someone should investigate and get to the bottom of this in case Jack Wilson's widow and/or Rhino/Warner are being cheated out of royalties from these sales. Greg Lewerke, son of Vault founder, claims Rhino / Warner own the Vault masters. If that's the case, why is only Essential Media Group credited on their digital releases of Jack's Vault albums? Looks like Amazon is selling the digital files as downloads or offering CD-Rs of what Essential Media Group LLC published back in 2011. I wonder if Essential Media Group did another needle drop for Ramblin' -- or if they just bootlegged the Fresh Sound Spain CD (which itself is apparently needle drop or 3 3/4 reel to reel bootleg dub). Are the track times of the Essential Media Group reissue identical to the Fresh Sound reissue? If so, that could indicate they copied the Fresh Sound (needle drop?) digital files. See here: https://www.amazon.com/Ramblin-Digitally-Remastered-Quartet-Featuring/dp/B0050DOQZ2 Product details Audio CD (May 11, 2011) Number of Discs: 1 Label: Essential Media Group Run Time: 43 minutes ASIN: B0050DOQZ2
  7. Greg Lewerke, the original Vault owner's son, said the Vault masters belong to Warner Brothers / Rhino.
  8. I doubt Essential Media Group LLC listened while transferring. If you want a big laugh, listen to the below clip of "Blue and Boogie" from "The Jazz Organs" which runs 29% fast as transferred and published on iTunes and Amazon by "Essential Media Group LLC." The Essential Media Group LLC web site states: "We have provided services to a wide range of clients. For major labels to Film & TV projects, our catalog of past and future hits has proven invaluable. Some of our clientele have included: HBO Films, Paramount , Time Life, Universal Music, Warner Bros, Sony Music, SMI, Virgin America, BMG, BMG Ariola, EMI, Kiddix GmbH, Ministry Of Sound, Telstar, Motor Music GmbH and many many more." So wait, I'm confused. Essential Media Group LLC attributes copyright of Jack's Vault recordings to Essential Media Group (per the copyright attribution on iTunes). But Essential Media group makes no copyright attribution to Warner Brothers/Rhino. This is perplexing as Jack Lewerke's son stated that Warner Brothers/Rhino own the Vault masters. But Essential Media Group LLC states on their web site they have "provided services to ... Warner Bros." So are the Essential Media Group LLC needle drop digital reissues of Jack's Vault catalog (e.g. Ramblin', The Jazz Organs and Brazilian Mancini) legal, legitimate reissues made with Warner/Rhino permission? Or are they in fact bootlegs in which Jack Wilson's music is being pirated in plain view? What is really going on here with Essential Media Group LLC? Source: http://essentialmg.com/about-us/
  9. From the JAZZDISCO.org website, I highlighted in RED below what appear to be KNOWN unreleased Jack Wilson recordings. Unclear if any of this unissued material has survived -- or if previously undocumented and additional unissued material survives beyond this list. As the Ike Isaacs Pied Piper live recordings were edited in post production, and the R.G.B. LP is so brief, it's logical to conclude that more of the 1967 live shows may have been recorded by legendary remote location sound engineer Wally Heider. Does anyone know if Red Callender owned all of the live Pied Piper tapes (including any outtakes)? 10. If you dig the Wilson stuff with Ayers, the 1963 Atlantic album is worth searching out. It was published in Japan on CD (a beautiful remaster) just a few years ago.
  11. Indeed, I'd love to see Century 67 Records license and release the 1970 unissued Jack Wilson Blue Note live recordings taped at Memory Lane in Los Angeles. It would be great if they could also publish the 1960s Wilson Vault Records material (including Rambln') on CD as well. All the digitally reissued Vault material currently available through iTunes and Amazon is sourced from vinyl records by dubious (perhaps bootleg) labels such as Essential Media Group LLC and Fresh Sound Spain. For example, in digital format, the Wilson album, The Jazz Organs, runs approximately 29% fast because the record label "Essential Media Group, LLC" dubbed a 33 rpm vinyl record errantly at 45 rpm. The music runs so unnaturally fast it sounds like the Chipmunks. The Vault material is owned by Warner Brothers / Rhino and really needs to be reissued from the original source tapes by a legal reissue label. Someone uploaded the Essential Media Group LLC needle drop of The Jazz Organs on YouTube. Listen to it below to hear how fast the (apparently) bootleg digital release runs when it is played back at 45 RPM instead of the proper and correct 33 RPM. The clowns at Essential Media Group LLC may be pirating Jack's music for profit as they don't list Rhino / Warner Brothers as the rights holders. This Essential Media Group LLC release was published in 2010, well within the 50 year copyright protection window of these 1964 sessions. I wonder if any of the royalties from the digital sales of the Essential Media Group LLC Jack Wilson titles on iTunes, Amazon and YouTube are making their way back to WB/Rhino and Sandie Wilson. I doubt it. LISTEN TO BELOW: "ESSENTIAL MEDIA GROUP LLC" ERRANTLY DUBS AN OLD VAULT 33 RPM RECORD AT 45 RPM, CAUSING IT TO RUN 29% FAST, AND SELLS IT ON ITUNES AND AMAZON FOR PROFIT WITHOUT ATTRIBUTING COPYRIGHT OWNERSHIP TO WARNER BROTHERS / RHINO. THIS MEANS WARNER/RHINO AND JACK'S WIDOW, SANDIE, MAY NOT BE GETTING A CENT IN ROYALTIES FROM THESE "ESSENTIAL MEDIA GROUP LLC" DIGITAL SALES OF JACK'S VAULT RECORDS BACK CATALOG.
  12. Teasing the Korean, when you say "albums" do you have the actual vinyl records or the CDs? Cuscuna had Something Personal remixed for the 90s Blue Note Conn CD, so perhaps the original 1966 stereo mixdown had some distortion which you are hearing. I don't recall any distortion on the CD remix reissue. IIRC, the 1996 CD reissue of Something Personal was a remix from the 4-track session tapes (recorded in Los Angeles). The CD does not contain the original stereo mix published on LP circa 1966. The 1996 CD also marked the first release of the outtake, Mr. Day (a Coltrane composition), also recorded at those L.A. 1966 sessions. If you like Harbor Freeway 5 p.m., Wilson cut a faster version on his debut 1963 Atlantic LP with Roy Ayers (listen below). More info can be found about Jack Wilson in this Organissimo megathread: --> Harbor Freeway (1963 version) One and Four (aka Mr. Day)
  13. Picked up the new Adderley and compared to the Jack Wilson release, my immediate reaction is that the Adderley release sounds like it was heavily compressed during post production mastering. Kind of sounds squashed, tubby and boomy. Sounds like the Adderley has some digital stereo reverb added in post production as well. The mastering on the Jack Wilson disc breathes much easier and is less fatiguing and is probably a closer approximation of the source tape. Haven't had a chance to listen to all the Adderley music yet, but the playing itself sounds very good so far. Oh -- the 26 page booklet in the Adderley CD was smashed and several pages were bent. The booklet wasn't trimmed to size properly only fits in the digipack sleeve with great force, and apparently the people the label hired to insert the booklets decided to carelessly force the booklets in the sleeve out of frustration, bending the pages.
  14. Well, I guess I’m just full of surprises, Ted. I had not previously heard of Mr. Callender.
  15. I gleaned some information from the image of the back cover of the Ike Isaac's Pied Piper LP on the R.G.B. label. The image below is from a 1992 Japanese LP pressing. It says the live performances on the LP (recorded in 1967 by Wally Heider) were produced by "Red Callender." From Wikipedia, it appears Red Callender was a member of the L.A. "wrecking crew" and died in 1992. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Callender The address for "R.G.B. Records" is listed as 731 W. Wilson Glendale, CA 91203 Hmmm. I wonder what became of the complete, unedited live tapes from the 1967 Pied Piper gig. The problem with the R.G.B. LP is that it is edited with applause overdubs, and there are post-production fade outs to accommodate the length of an LP.
  16. mikeweil came across this list of unissued Jack Wilson live Blue Note recordings from 1970. Anyone have any info if these tapes have survived? Anyone here know Michael Cuscuna and care to ask him about these tapes?
  17. Awesome find Mike! Does Blue Note / EMI still have these tapes? Paging Michael Cuscuna... I will paste this info in the Jack Wilson megathread...
  18. Wilson's interpretation of the jazz standard "Here's That Rainy Day" (popularized by Frank Sinatra) on the new "Call Me: Jazz from the Penthouse" CD is mind-blowing awesome. After playing the ethereal melody in a relaxed tempo, Wilson then tears into a jaw-dropping, virtuosic and innovative fleet-fingered improvisation coupled with unexpected harmonic chord voicings that never lose sight of the groove. I think this new CD is the only published recording of Wilson' tackling this jazz standard and thus makes "Call Me: Jazz from the Penthouse" a highly valuable addition to his discography. Below is another fantastic unpublished photo of Wilson (courtesy of Jack's wife Sandie) from the CD booklet. If you are a fan of Jack Wilson, you will enjoy this excellent new CD! Buy it!
  19. Here's another photo from the booklet of "Call Me: Jazz from the Penthouse". The "dream team" of Wilson and Ayers from the 1965 Ramblin' session.
  20. I highly recommend the new Jack Wilson CD "Call Me: Jazz from the Penthouse" that was released January 18, 2019. It's a legal release and includes several unpublished photos supplied by Jack's widow Sandie. Below is a sample of one of the cool photos in the booklet. This photo looks like an outtake from the Ramblin' cover photo shoot. The record label is listed as "Century 67 Records" with distribution by "Light in the Attic records and distribution." This is a fantastic release. The recording is mono (it was originally intended for radio broadcast) and the radio engineer was mixing on the fly, but the fidelity is very good overall. On this new release, I'm really digging Jack's inimitable, impressionist, cascading, "sheets of sound" style that he uses to conjure a dreamlike effect on tracks like Harbor Freeway 5 p.m. Based on the high quality of this 1966 Penthouse release, I hope Century 67 Records will also track down the master tapes (or session reels if they exist) of Ramblin' in the Warner Brothers / Rhino vaults and issue a proper remaster on CD as well. (It's a shame that the only CD release of Ramblin' currently available is the Fresh Sound Spain needle drop bootleg.) https://www.amazon.com/Call-Me-Penthouse-JACK-WILSON/dp/B07J3BBYZR
  21. The interesting thing about the LP cover of the Pied Piper is that Ike Issacs' leisure suit and afro suggests the cover photo was taken circa the mid-1970s. Yet the live date was recorded earlier -- back in 1967. So did these live Piper tapes sit unpublished for about 10 (or more) years, and then a record label stuck a mid-1970s photo of Ike on the cover? It makes one wonder what label originally recorded these performances and how they ended up years later on the "R.G.B." label. Anyone ever heard of the R.G.B. label and who was behind it? If so, any ideas on who owns the Pied Piper recordings today? The 2011 Interplay Records CD was a needle drop. The 1967 live location recordings were engineered by the legendary Wally Heider. Maybe the record label (RGB?) still has the original, unedited multitracks from the live shows? The LP is clearly truncated and heavily edited. Perhaps complete shows / sets still exist on tape. Also the title of the original LP was "Ike Isaacs At Freddie Jett's Pied Piper with Jack Wilson and Jimmy Smith." From Wikipedia, it appears Ike Isaacs passed in 1981.
  22. Thanks for posting mikeweil. Yeah, the Aug. 9, 1964 quintet at the Lindy looks very promising! Has anyone confirmed if the unissued Wilson Atlantic stuff survived the February 1978 Atlantic warehouse fire? Resonance Records or another respected boutique reissue label should contact Warner / Rhino and investigate which Atlantic/Vault Jack Wilson tapes have survived. We know, for example, that the "Jack Wilson Quartet featuring Roy Ayers" (1963) and the "Two Sides of Jack Wilson" (1964) have both survived on tape given the legal and excellent sounding compact disc releases published by Warner Japan from tape sources. Presumably, Atlantic kept it's master tapes in a different facility than the one that burned. But I've read the 1978 fire impacted a lot of unreleased material across the Atlantic artist portfolio (5,000 - 6,000 tape reels were allegedly destroyed or damaged.) Also - I wonder if Jack Wilson had any personal tape copies of any of the unreleased Atlantic or Vault sessions. (John Coltrane, for example, had some personal tape copies which have been commercially published on compact disc due to the original Impulse master tapes being lost.) Maybe Jack's widow, Sandie, would know if tape or acetate copies of any unissued Jack Wilson Atlantic/Vault material survives in Wilson's own personal archive.
  23. Nice find on that Jack Wilson 45 rpm single! Hadn't heard that one before. Can you please post the unissued recordings here from the Lord discography? According to Greg Lewerke, son of Vault owner Jack Lewerke, the Vault masters are owned by Warner Brothers/Rhino. The interesting thing is that none of the Jack Wilson Vault digital reissues that were dubbed from vinyl records by dubious record labels such as Fresh Sound Spain and Essential Media Group LLC (based in Florida, USA) make any reference to any copyright held by Warner Brothers / Rhino. That suggests to me that the Fresh Sound and Essential Media Group reissues are of questionable legality. Hypothetically, even if the Vault tapes are destroyed or missing (and there is no information that says this is the case), any boutique label legally licensing the recording for a reissue would still have to attribute a copyright to Warner Brothers / Rhino. But there is no such copyright attribution to be found on those digital releases. This is a red flag and suggests that further investigation may be needed to determine if these "needle drop" releases are legal. I think Fresh Sound tries to skirt this issue due to copyright law in Europe. But I think they published Ramblin on CD back in the 1990s -- well within the 50 year window of copyright protection in Europe since Ramblin was first published by Vault in 1966. Likewise, Essential Media Group LLC issued some Vault material digitally in 2010 -- again well within the 50 year copyright protection window. I'm inclined to think (and hope) that Warner Brothers / Rhino still has the original master tapes for the Jack Wilson Vault material and just hasn't bothered with reissuing it. Maybe a respected label like Resonance Records or Mosaic Records etc will someday reach out to Warner Brothers / Rhino to investigate if the Jack Wilson Vault masters survive and then reissue them -- either individually or as part of a larger Wilson retrospective box set. Ramblin', in particular, is a very strong and enjoyable Vault album which deserves a reissue from the original source tapes. Perhaps alternates and outtakes from the Ramblin' session may exist as well.
  24. For those not aware, Jack Wilson plays piano/keyboards on approximately 50 tracks in the Gerald Wilson Mosaic Records box set, entitled "The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings of Gerald Wilson & His Orchestra."
