  1. Is the Jack Wilson SHM-CD remaster of "Something Personal" a transfer from the 1990s remix? Or the original 1966 stereo mix?
  2. Has it been revealed if these are new transfers from the Blue Note 75th series? Or are they old remasterings (such as RVGs) being recycled?
  3. Just received Byrd's "A New Perspective" SHMCD. It blows away the late 1990s RVG CD remaster. I compared both closely on headphones. The RVG employs excessive compression. In addition, Rudy apparently used something like an Aphex Aural Exciter as the drum cymbal and high hat on the RVG CD remaster splashes artificially across the stereo image. In the SHM, which sounds unprocessed, the cymbal and high hat are confined to the right channel. It's ironic that RVG marred his beautiful recordings with horrid CD remastering techniques. The SHM CD series, along with the XRCDs and Analogue Productions SACDs reveal how wonderful these recordings are -- and the extent that the RVG CD masters underserved the tapes. It's sad that we had to suffer through 10 years of RVG remasters.
  4. How do the Freddie Roach and John Patton SHM CD remasterings compare to the old 1990s Japanese TOCJ CDs? I have the 90s era Japanese CDs and am curious if these new remasterings are a significant upgrade, especially since the SHMCDs were apparently sourced from the master tapes (can anyone confirm?) and the 90s Japanese CDs may have been transferred from Japanese 2nd generation analog copy tapes.
  5. So what masterings are these if not new transfers?
  6. Has the next batch of Blue Note SHMCD been announced?
  7. Anyone heard the Here Tis bonus track "Blues #4?" How many minutes is the track and is it worthwhile to pick up? I already have the session so am asking if it's worth repurchasing to get the outtake.
  8. Check this out. AcousticSounds.com has reissued Jamal's Alhambra as a needle drop to achieve a high resolution reissue. About 15 years ago, this was issued on CD in Japan from a tape transfer. I guess that album master tape must have perished in the 2008 fire. I wonder how many of the Argo / Cadet master tapes got torched. http://store.acousticsounds.com/d/104237/Ahmad_Jamal-Ahmad_Jamals_Alhambra-DSD_Single_Rate_28MHz64fs_Download
  9. Thanks - anyone have a full list of all the Blue Note SHMCD retransfers issued thus far? I owned a Japanese TOCJ (maybe a 1990s transfer) of Donald Byrd's "I’m Tryin’ To Get Home." I remember this CD sounding quite awful -- like it was sourced from a multigenerational damaged copy. It will be interesting to hear if this new SHMCD is a dramatic improvement. I'm also tempted to pick up Green's Goin West -- as the RVG CD of that title was heavily compressed.
  10. Are all of these brand new 2014 transfers from the analog source tapes?
  11. Is Green Jr. sharing any of the money he collects from the sale of the video on payloadz with Green's co-performers (or their heirs) in the Paris footage (i.e. the bassist and the drummer)?
  12. The video was taken down from YouTube and the message says: "The video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Grant Green Jr." Interesting. Did Green Jr. actually obtain the legal copyrights (from apparently the French television entity) to sell the Parisian video himself? It looks like he just obtained an incomplete, multi-generational edited bootleg dub from somewhere and is selling it on payloadz.com. While I have no issue with the Green family being compensated, if he is not the owner of the video, then the actual copyright owner is not getting compensated for those sales. If Green Jr. is the copyright owner as he claims, why does the footage he is selling not appear to be complete and first generation in video fidelity? I'd love to see the complete program transferred from the source tapes and issued on home video in the best quality, such as the Jazz Icons series.
  13. Does Green Jr. own the rights to the video in order to sell it? Discussion on the Hoffman forum: http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/watch-grant-green-perform-seven-songs-live-in-paris-in-1969-unreleased.399278/ This appears to be the setlist. Anyone know the title of song 6? 1. Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing 2. Oleo 3. How Insensitive 4. All Day Long 5. Sonnymoon for Two 6. ? (not sure what this song is) 7. I Wish You Love
  14. So how did Willette die and where is the original Fallico article? Was Willette stabbed in prison as someone noted earlier in the thread? Given that the Japanese have issued Willette's two Argo Lps on CD 15 years ago, is there any chance the Japanese might reissue either album on CD -- but with the unissued 1965 Cadet session appended as bonus tracks? Did the 1965 Cadet session survive the 2008 Universal fire?
  15. France used the 625 line SECAM system (higher resolution than the US NTSC 525 line standard) and introduced color broadcasts in 1967. So, yes it's possible the Green performance was taped in color; however, there is no evidence of this yet.
  16. I'm not familiar with the 1969 Paris Grant Green recordings. Do you have more info? Is that a French studio date or a live recording? If a live recording, was it a professional recording for French radio - or amateur recording? I believe it is a part of this performance seen here, the tunes are apparently from the Grant Green trio portion of this concert with double bass and drums. Would love to know who owns the copyright to this and why it hasn't been released before. Seems like a landmark piece of film in Jazz guitar history. Thanks for posting that video. Where did you find the tracklisting ? Any chance Cuscuna can help get this released on a future Jazz Icons DVD or Blu Ray? Looks like a 2" quad videotape source taped in a TV soundstage, most likely a mono soundtrack. The duration is listed as 68 minutes and 71 minutes. From the content listing below, it looks like the three guitarists may have jammed together, and then each guitarist led a bass, drum trio by themself for ~25 minutes each. Amazing this hasn't surfaced before. I wonder if the quad source tape is private hands. The description of the video could also be read to say that the jam session itself (with all three guitarists) was 71 minutes. 2 DVDs? I recall reading somewhere that around 1969 Green was getting himself back together (apparently after kicking H) and that Burrell was helping Green out and took him on this Paris tour. It would great to hear and see Green's full Parisian TV performance. 17. thnx for the thumbs up btw hint reg. "matador".......will reconsider A warning on Matador. While the BN SHMs generally include the bonus tracks from previous US releases, Matador misses the bonus track from the 1990 CD which made it the complete session. I can't see this track being logically reshuffled to another Grant Green SHM. Sound is awesome, of course. Wasn't Wives and Lovers original recorded during the Solid Session? If so, that's the best place for it.
  18. Cuscuna provides a new liner note intro to the new Blue John HMCD Japan reissue -- so he is certainly aware of the five bonus tracks, although I don't know if he authorized them or what his overall role was in the reissue. Do these new reissues contain new US remasterings of the back catalog? Or are they remasterings by Japanese engineers? I picked up the new Japanese Matador CD reissue and it is much better than the old 1990 cd, clearly a different, new mastering. I'm not familiar with the 1969 Paris Grant Green recordings. Do you have more info? Is that a French studio date or a live recording? If a live recording, was it a professional recording for French radio - or amateur recording?
  19. Given that Universal Japan just reissued Patton's "Blue John" on CD with five previously unissued songs with Green as a sideman, is there a chance that Blue Note and Verve may publish some of this unissued Green stuff? 20. Is that SKU a Japanese repressing of the 2008 US Originals remaster?
  21. How is the mastering in this series overall? Any comments on the sound quality of the 2008 Originals remaster of Getz's "Sweet Rain?"
  22. "While these new versions will become available in Digital Hi Def, CD and the Mastered for iTunes formats, the allure of vinyl records is WAY too potent to ignore. This year, Blue Note - along with our friends at Universal Music Enterprises - is launching a major 75th Anniversary Vinyl Initiative that is dedicated to the proposition that our catalog should be readily available at a low cost - featuring high quality pressings and authentic reproductions of Blue Note's iconic packaging. Beginning in March 2014, we'll start rolling out five remastered vinyl reissues every month. Although this program begins in celebration of Blue Note's 75th Anniversary, our catalog runs so deep that we will faithfully be reissuing five albums a month for many years to come!" Anyone know what month/year the CD versions of these new Blue Note masterings come out?
  23. Was Kenny Burrell's "Freedom" (circa 1963 Blue Note recordings) a late 70s King release in Japan? If so, will "Freedom" finally make its long overdue worldwide debut on CD in this new Japanese reissue series?
