  1. I bought 14 4-CD sets (they have 100) from www.jpc.de for $5.29 a piece (collectors choice sells it for about $20). The shipping from Germany was $13.77 (flat price). These Quadromania sets that are made by Membran International, and a cheap way to sample an artist before paying a premium on Ebay, etc. You can get alot of music for $100 and they take very little space since the jewel box is only about 1.25 times the size of a standard one. Those that haw passed on O'Day, Hodges, Ory, Bailey, Hacket, Teagarden, etc Mosaic Boxes can get an idea if they want to still seak them, and for those like myself who bought some of these sets from Mosaic, these inexpensive sets fill in some gaps. There are some blues artists and vocalists also. For those that are conserned about the greater than 50 year royalty stuff - there probably are none paid. But I did read that Blue Mitchell's widow received nearly 20 times the amount of royalties for one song (that he wrote and) that was used by a rap/newage group than for all the other recordings he took part of. I think the whole royalty argument cannot have a black and white answer for many of the artists signed away their rights or renegotiated for less or never earned enough to pay back the advances, so its clear - clear as mud. But incase I'm wrong, I went to confession twice - once for me and once for you.
  2. I bought a 4-CD Shorty Rogers collection from www.jpc.de for $5.29 (collectors choice sells it for about $20). The shipping from Germany was $13.77 (flat price). This is one of the Quadromania sets that are made by Membran International, and a cheap way to sample an artist before paying a premium on Ebay, etc. You can get alot of music for $100.
  3. 32 Jazz's double-disc set "At Last" reissues two of Tony Scott's best albums, "Golden Moments and I'll Remember". Thats what allmusic said. With Bill Evans, Jimmy Garrison and Pete La Roca filling out the group I figured that it had to be real good and I would looking for somthing with a clarinet. I was expecting something similar to Buddy DeFranco (w Sonny Clark) or Jimmy Giuffre but I would have been happy to just hear some clarinet (which is hardly heard, either missing or drowned out by the drummer.
  4. Is the O'Day set like the other Verve sets (Mulligan, Farlow, Hodges) that are also being sold in Europe etc under Universals name?
  5. Have seen a (German?) label named Quadromania that has inexpensive 4 CD box sets, with early works by Hodges, Hackett, Webster, Hawkins, etc, etc. Any feedback on this label?
  6. Has anyone compared the Complete Roost Recordings to the Complete Roost Sessions? If so, how do they differ?
  7. If you look now on Ebay, there is a good deal on a partial for Bobby Hackett. Discs 3 and 4 )Mosaic) as a "buy it now" for $8.99. I've bought from the seller before and would deal with him again.
  8. Freddie Hubbard - Ready for Freddie has Tyner. Hub-Tones is very good.
  9. Hi, My aunt is a big fan of Jim Nabors and I've been trying to locate the Jim Nabors Mosaic, but i cant find it anywhere. This girl has no clue? Please help.
  10. It would be funny if the sound was good but each track sounds like a precursor of Dan’s favorite childhood song, "Billy Don't Be a Hero".
  11. On Disk 3 of the Randy Weston Select there is an unusual type of percussion sound, it can be heard at the beginning and throughout “Mystery of Love”. Does anyone know what type of instrument is used to make the “Shhhhhhh” sound. It sounds like it might be shaken like maracas but it has more of a cymbal like sound.
  12. alldirect a couple of times a year ($100+). Have ordered from alphacrazeshopping via yahoo shopping. They have good prices on certain items. Recently bought 2 JSP boxes and 2 proper boxes for $70 and the shipping was less than $5.

    Feb 15 RVGs

I think it’s great that True Blue was reissued. I have the connoisseur but I haven’t bought the RVG yet. Has anyone here compared the two? I noticed that amazon UK has listed a True Blue released on 2/14 for #6.99 and another that was released on 2/15 for #10.99 that says import. The ASIN number for the import is the same as the one listed on amazon USA. Are the CD’s not the same? And why would someone pay so much more for that import?
  14. I asked a friend, who asked a friend, to explain Atonal Chromaticism and this is the friend of a friends response. Hope this helps. ******** I gave enough detail (hopefully) to make the point, but I did gloss over some stuff. ---------------------------- CONCEPT OF CHROMATICISM: chromaticism refers to all 12 tones there are only 12 'different' tones, they replicate themselves across the octaves creating the illusion that there is more than 12. a a# b c c# d d# e f f# g g# | next octave: a# b c c# d d# e f f# g g# | ................ Note: there are 2 ways to notate enharmonic (same) tones/notes, eg a-sharp is the same tone/note as b-flat ---------------------------------------------- CONCEPT OF TONAL SYSTEMS (IE. KEYS) Need to understand what is meant by "tonal system", because "atonal" is a system that is "not tonal" A tonal system is composed of 7 tones (99% of the time, there are a few exceptions such as pentatonic "5 tones") selected from the set of 12 chromatic tones. For "major" keys, you have: (there also exist minor and modal keys, but they use 7 tones also in a structured way) key: set of tones (there are 12 keys because there are 12 tones to choose from for 'starting' points) a a b c# d e f# g# a# ponderous notation, they 'always' instead call this b-flat (there is no flat symbol on the keyboard, so I'll use 'b' as the 2nd char) bb bb c d eb f g ab b b c# d# e f# g# a# c c d e f g a b c etc for the remaining 'starting' points These patterns are not random, and they actually follow the laws of physics. I'll explain this in detail if you're interested. It is these 'patterns' of notes that create the illusion of tone system, major, minor, or modal. Ie. If a composer sticks to just the notes "c d e f g a b". a seasoned musician will immediately 'hear' this as the key of c. ---------------------- ATONAL CHROMATICISM In atonal music, they "don't" stick these sets of 7 tones, rather they will use all 12 tones, destroying the illusion of a key, or tonal system.
  15. A stupid CD question about scuffs, scratches, defects, etc. When you buy a new CD, how perfect should the plastic bottom surface be from imperfections? Should you return the CD if the plastic is slightly scuffed or has a small scratch? Related to this, when I see adds for multiple CD collections (box sets, etc) I see its common for the add to display the CD’s overlapped on a table (the way a deck of playing cards is overlapped by magicians). Are the CD’s that durable? And should I only be worried about the metal surface and not the plastic?
