  1. Steve Lacy - Moon (BYG Actuel) Maynard Ferguson - A Message From Birdland (Roulette)
  2. Eddie Costa - Vinnie Burke Trio (Josie mono). 1963 reissue of the Jubilee original from 1956.
  3. Besides one track, I don't know. But I'd like to have that track. I have a 1995 paperback discography of Capt. John Handy, the New Orleans alto saxophonist. It lists a 1960 session by the Young Tuxedo Brass Band, with Handy on board. The only tune issued from the session is a version of "Saints," on the MONO LP I'm looking for.
  4. The Pukinje Shift - Threads (Chunklet LP). I love this Atlanta instrumental trio. The limited edition LP is sold out, I think, but you can stream or download at Bandcamp.
  5. King Crimson - The Great Deceiver box set; the Pittsburgh concert
  6. John Clark - Song of Light (Hidden Meaning). The French horn player's 1980 debut as leader.
  7. If any of our members in the UK are digging through LPs and come across this one for less than 20 pounds, please pick it up for me: New Orleans Drummers (MONO [Music of New Orleans] LP16)
  8. The Eagle Brass Band (GHB). 1966 recording by a London-based New Orleans-style brass band filled out with ringers from Louisiana. Among its other virtues, it's about the only opportunity to hear the great Captain John Handy in a brass band setting.
  9. Bobby Hutcherson - Total Eclipse (BN 1980s pressing)
  10. Joe Henderson In Japan, from the Milestone box set.
  11. Yes, yes, and yes! NP: Anthony Braxton with the Northwest Creative Orchestra - Eugene (1989) (Black Saint)
  12. Ha! I was thinking that if I keep the CD, it will likely never be anything but background music for me.
  13. I just realized that I never replied to this - apologies. Sound is decent - call it A minus on the bootleg scale. Side one is from the Jazz Casual TV show, and is out in more complete form on DVD. Side two is special - a hard-to-find long piece called "Creation" from the Half Note in 1965, during the same run that produced the One Up, One Down: Live at the Half Note CD set.
  14. Classic Capitol Jazz Session - The Benny Carter big band sides.
  15. An eclectic day so far: Cream - Disraeli Gears (Polydor mono CD) Onward Brass Band - Paul Barbarin's Onward Brass Band in Concert 1968 (Jazz Crusade) Theon Cross - Fyah (Gearbox) Muhal Richard Abrams - Young at Heart, Wise in Time (Delmark) I'm apparently in the minority in not being very impressed by the Theon Cross, at least based on one listen. I had high hopes based on the concept and the clips I had heard, but I found the riff-based tunes and (more importantly) the solos pretty simplistic.
  16. I like it a lot. I remember the drumming being kind of clumsy, but there's not much of it.
  17. NP: Derek Bailey - Fairly Early With Postscripts (Emanem). "Six Fairly Early Pieces" on this album is as good as anything I've heard from Mr. Bailey.
  18. Johnny Cash - American VI: Ain't No Grave (American) Bobby Bradford/Frode Gjerstad - Silver Cornet (Nessa) John Clark - I Will (Postcards)
  19. Roscoe Mitchell - Before There was Sound (Nessa). An amazing "dead sea scrolls" document.
  20. Swing and such tonight: Bunny Berigan - I Can't Get Started / Rhythm Saved the World (Okeh). A first draft for his magnificent later 12" Victor recording of "Started." Sidney Bechet - Blues of Bechet / The Sheik of Araby (Victor). The first overdubbed solo jazz record. Sidney Bechet/Mezz Mezzow - Really the Blues, parts 1 & 2 (King Jazz) Sidney Bechet/Mezz Mezzow - Bowin' the Blues / Old School (King Jazz) Billie Holiday - Night and Day / Gloomy Sunday (Columbia)
