What I'd like to know is what they sound like when playd quad. Any experiences? I have some 70's impulses that boast about it, but I've never had the chance to test that s**t out.

The reissue of the long sold out (about 50 copies were made) CD-r is finally out in a proper format. Some killer Finnish free jazz on the loose here. Official promo: "I'm going to call this 'Rural Jazz". Just sue me if you think I'm wrong. But hey, this IS backwoods stuff, men of the deep forest, barefooted, whirling in their longjohns like at some crazy afterparty of the county fair. Moonshine troubadours. No cool jazz-poses here, oh no, sir. I bet they couldn't do that even if they tried (well, i know that for a fact.). But these boys know what they're doing, don't get me wrong on that. It goes where it's supposed to go. What always struck me as their greatest quality was that it never got ugly. You know, this 'free jazz'-thing, too often it's just downright UGLY, like watching endless repeats of Ultimate Fighter, all tight, sweaty muscles and low-brows, 'I'LL TAKE YOU DOWN, BOY!!'. None of it here, no sir. And that doesn't mean that it's lacking something, quite the contrary. The power is elsewhere, the power is in the union. Goddamn fieldworkers, really. Everyone knows their place in the chain, reap and sow, divide and conquer...and there's Laurel & Hardy too. It's serious stuff but not a matter of life/death. There's a calm inside the storm, always. I don't think the us pressings had black labels, they had green just as the german ones, just a bit darker hue. The black labels are more recent issues, from the late 80's to 90's.

Which Mengelberg/Bennink duo do you have? I have a few ICPs at this point (002, 003, 007/008, 009, 011, 020, 022). With my crappy income, I've had to prioritize on what I spend money, but eventually I'd like a set of all of the early ICP LPs. An original (handmade cover) of New Acoustic Swing Duo and the low-fi flexi discs (ICP 013) are likely out of my financial reach, but the former was reissued a couple of times. Those will be the ones I can afford. Yeah, I love those ICPs. Great music. I still need a copy of Groupcomposing too. Even if the music does not live up to the hype of the lineup, it is still a great cover: The duo was ICP 010, this Instant Composers Pool.

lucky devil, I've been looking for that for quite some time. Most of those ICP's are really, really, good. I've only got the New Acoustic Swing duo, Mengelberg/Bennink duo, and Lijm by Bennink/Bailey, which I finally acquired recently. right at this very instant, I'm listening to Nursery Cryme by Genesis. It's been 10 years since the last spin.

Great to hear! I recorded that first side with my "portable" cassette deck, and the music is excellent, even if the recording is a bit ... "unprofessional".

Another one going even higher; $2,616 Hank Mobley Insane, especially for a VG+ (or more likely, VG) copy. Yeah, especially since you can get the new Music Matters 45rpm 12"s for $50 and they'll sound better and look better (nice gatefold). Good album though. No reissue has ever, will ever, look better than the originals. Period. You can argue about the sound, true, but not the printjobs, textures, cardboard quality, colors. No. Being a gatefold makes no difference. But yes, 2k is a bit much even for an original.

Bringing back an old topic, but I just got my copy of this, and I'm not really sure do I like or not. It seems to have (at a quick glance) quite a few errors (Ian Carr the guitarist, confusing Jimmy Garrison and Rashied Ali, having many release dates totally incorrect, claiming Like Someone in Love by Blakey (released over five years after recording) to be one of his most admired and a record that showed the way for future (obviously really talking about A Night in Tunisia, recorded in the same sessions) etc. These errors, even if small, make me doubt every detail in the book, and that's not a good starting point. Also, a jazz cover book without ONE Peter Brötzmann cover is a bad joke. This is weird considering it does have some obscure Romanian covers, a lot of MPS covers etc. Might be copyright issue, I don't know. So, disappointment it is, but how big, I have to figure out with further readings.
