  12. In Seattle, Everyday Music has a good selection of used CD's. Bop Street Records is also good, especially for vinyl. (Full disclosure: the owner of Bop Street is a friend of mine.) When in New York, I like to stop by More Music in the East Village. In Chicago, the Jazz Record Mart. It may not be what it once was, but it's still unique and fascinating.
  13. It's delightful to see those call letters here. WHPK is where I first became involved in radio, as a student at the University of Chicago many years ago.

  19. David, you posted the Facebook message in post #177. Bill requested a friend post on his Facebook account that he had fallen back into a child pornography addiction and subsequently been arrested for trafficking it. Don't you read that as Bill admitting guilt? Surely if it were not, he would have asked his friend not to post that, but an indignant refutation. No? No, Bill hasn't admitted guilt in a legal sense. He has admitted that he has a serious problem with child pornography and that is why he is in trouble. Yes, that's disgusting. But he hasn't admitted that he committed any crimes -- let alone the child rapes that some board members are convinced he must have committed. I won't be surprised if he does plead guilty, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm more focused on the legal case, perhaps because I'm a lawyer. (However, I've never practiced criminal law and don't have any expertise in this area.) But I realize that's not all that matters. It's fair for you to decide, based on what he actually has admitted, that you don't ever want to have anything to do with him again.
  20. Indeed, congratulations, Chuck! Grandparenthood must be wonderful. And Thedwork, if the thread bothers you, I suggest that you not read it. There's no reason why others should censor themselves because of your sensitivity to the topic.
  21. I did not issue an "apology" for Bill. I just pointed out that addicts are sick people and that we don't know what Bill actually did. That doesn't mean I'm defending him. These allegations trouble me as much as they do anyone. But they are still just allegations. Earlier in the thread, we talked about how a defendant is innocent until proven guilty. Obviously a lot of people don't believe in that principle, but it's a cornerstone of our legal system.
  22. I believe Bill is scheduled to enter a plea in his case sometime next week. It is just one step in the process. If he pleads not guilty, that does not mean he will not enter a guilty plea later. Bill admits he is addicted to child pornography. For some posters, that's the end of the story: he's a beast. As has been pointed out, it is easier for many people to find sympathy for someone addicted to heroin. But addictions are illnesses, and an addiction to porn can consume a person just like a drug habit. I will try not to "judge" Bill because we don't know the case against him yet. We haven't heard his story. We don't know what he actually did or even what he is alleged to have done, except we know the prosecutors accuse him of uploading certain files. Based on the general publicity about the website, some people seem to assume that Bill was also involved in producing pornography - but I'm not aware of any such allegations. Possessing, viewing and trading child pornography are unsavory obsessions, but they are in an entirely different realm than producing it.
  23. This week on "Straight, No Chaser," we heard a few more Charlie Parker tunes and then moved on to the usual hodge-podge of jazz styles: Al Haig -- "Yardbird Suite" -- Al Haig Trio And Sextets -- Period Stefano di Baptista -- "Congo Blues" -- Parker's Mood -- Blue Note Sherrie Maricle / John Mastroianni Quintet -- "Scrapple From The Apple" -- Cookin' On All Burners -- Stash Joe Farrell -- "Confirmation" -- Birds & Ballads - Galaxy Terri Lyne Carrington -- "Insomniac" -- The Mosaic Project -- Concord (N) Alphonse Mouzon -- "Blues Clues" -- Angel Face -- Tenacious (N) Steam -- "Chump Change" -- Realtime -- Atavistic Matana Roberts -- "Oska T" -- Live in London -- Central Control (N) David S. 24. The following is a message that was posted on Bill Barton's Facebook page: ------ This is Tasara, writing in for Bill. He asked me to post here for people who are wondering where he is. Bill has had a serious addiction to child pornography, which is what put him in "sex offender" status. He was doing alright for a while and then .. .he wasn't. He was picked up in April by homeland security for trafficking child pornography. He has not been convicted yet. He also suffers from PTSD from the Vietnam war and is living in a system that does not always get him his meds, so whether or not he is 'ok' is a relative thing. This is very hard for a lot of us to digest, as Bill has been an incredible support to many communities across Seattle. Those of us who know his heart ...well this is very hard. I have certainly gone through a lot of emotions myself. I try to send as much love and light to him as possible. I will put is account in remission once I reach the few people he has asked me to reach. I have an address if you would like to write to him in Louisiana. I will be leaving on Monday for a week but then I will be back. You can reach me on my account "Tasara Gen" --------- http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=368624464996
