  2. I'm biased about this because for many years I've done volunteer jazz programming for broadcast radio stations. Satellite radio may be good, but it's sucking up the audience for broadcast and Internet radio, especially the audience for non-mass-market music genres like jazz. It's part of a long-term trend that's causing radio stations to drop their specialized music programming and switch to talk formats. Sirius may program good stuff, but for me there's nothing like having a real live DJ whose selections are based on his or her personal taste.
  3. Last night: A quartet led by trumpeter Lina Allemano of Toronto, performing in the Earshot Jazz Festival in Seattle. If you haven't heard her, check her out. While there are possible traces of Lester Bowie, Dave Douglas and perhaps Tomasz Stanko in her playing, Allemano has her own sound as well as a beautiful tone. Her sax player, Brodie West, is also quite good.

  7. I heard that the Japanese engineers who invented the audio CD had a goal to fit Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on a single disk, not that LP producers had that goal. The Ninth clocks in at about 75 minutes, depending on the conductor, so that makes sense.
