On "Straight, No Chaser" on KBCS on October 1st, we paid tribute to two musicians who recently passed away, saxophonist Big Jay McNeely (1927-2018) and trumpeter and percussionist Jerry Gonzalez (1949-2018).  We heard selections from Tom Harrell, Pat Metheny, Jane Bunnett & Maqueque and Jazzmeia Horn, who are appearing in the 2018 Earshot Jazz Festival; and from Bobby Previte, who will be at The Royal Room in Seattle tomorrow, October 2nd.  If you check it out in the audio archive at www.kbcs.fm, this is what you'll hear:

  5. "Code Girl" is excellent.  Mary is continuing to develop her sound.  Ambrose Akinmusire shines all the way through.  I'm not usually into vocals on "progressive jazz" recordings, but the art-song vocals here are pretty good -- much better than those on Mary's CD with Jessica Pavone.

    As far as I can tell, "Code Girl" is the name of the double CD, not of the band.

     

  6. This week on "Straight, No Chaser" on KBCS, we paid tribute to Randy Weston.  We heard a variety of recordings from different phases of his career.  At the end there was also a tune by Negative Press Project, who will be at the Sea Monster Lounge in Seattle, Sept. 5 at 10 p.m.
