  1. Thanks so much. Daley will be on box set. 95% sure. I think you'll love the Flight for Four sound quality. We worked on it big time. Same with the upcoming Steig.
  2. Gee never heard of Joe Harriott's Hum Dono. I see a copy sold for some $1500.00 on eBay. So not sure how to hear this.
  3. Gee guys thanks. I figured out how to package the Joe Daley by the way so that hump is flattened. It will be gorgeous. Okay as we move forward we'll recoup all we've written and see if there is something killer to put out in two years. But for now I'm set.
  4. Thank you all. I think we are all tracking. It is a very good performance but not quite there in the same league as what I try to do. Fischer is a work of genius and Steig is just an outstanding performance rarely heard and I think as good as flute gets in jazz. So I had no hesitation with them. This Garbarek thing is another matter. So I'll sit tight for now on that and get out the ones I have. Well last night I listened to the Tapscott performance again The Giant Awakens on the digital transfer we made and it sure sounds good. It is not a great audio recording but not too bad and the playing is just fabulous. Now that one I adore. Thanks again to everyone who weighed in. In a year I'm either going to stop putting out reissues or have to find another after the Daley trio stuff. "All" I have left is: Steig Flute Fever, Tapscott The Giant Is Awakened, Carter Bradford Self Determination Music and then Daley Live At Newport. Well on second thought that is a good two years of issues as I tend to put out 1 or 2 reissues a year.
  5. Dear All, as I look to the future, I'd like to have you all weigh in on your opinion of Jan Garbarek's The Esoteric Circle as a possible reissue. I ask because right now I'm leasing rights from Ace Records UK and they own the rights to the Garbarek performance. So it would be relatively easy. The question is quality of performance. I know it is at least a very good performance. I love many parts of it. But this is not a shoe-in like Hemphill, Dixon, Tapscott and Carter for me. I need some other views here. So would appreciate your weigh ins on this. I know there might be other performances I would put before this but with the opportunity to lease it at hand, I bring up this possibility now. Thanks. Yes, it is on CD in Japan but not widely available.
  6. Thanks. I would not say Joe Daley is way on the back burner. it is just putting out 3 CDs in a gorgeous box is doing to take some doing. Or I put them out one by one. Not sure yet. But as long as I had the leasing rights to ACE Records, I'm doing those now while the iron is hot. But I do have my releases for the next year. But then Daley will come up. i need to assemble all the music and then decide my route. I'd love to put it all out in chrono order as it is fascinating and especially the actual live music (never heard) is fabulous.
  7. Thanks so much again. Flight for Four seems to be selling okay but too early to tell as it is always that second 500 that is hardest. I almost always sell 500 right off the bat because of the reputation of the company now. Hope it sells 1000 as that is all I printed. That is what I'll be printing of all my next releases.
  8. Thank you all for your kind words. Very appreciated as mentioned earlier. Next to reissue is Jeremy Steig Flute Fever on 1 Dec 2013. It is at the distributors now and ready to issue then. Next will probably be the Horace Tapscott The Giant is Awakened. Then John Carter Bobby Bradford, Self Determination Music. I may switch the order of the last two but I doubt it. As far as making these release known I relay on the few reviews I get, word of mouth like this site, and the reputation of the label and finally the distribution to stores through my only distributor. My marketing efforts are pretty lame so mainly word of mouth and reviews. Sometimes I write a famous reviewer, supposedly very hip at that, and they act as if the reissue is just another jazz CD amongst the pile so doesn't get reviewed. Here are some recent reviews of Flight for Four: http://burningambulance.com/2013/07/31/john-carter-bobby-bradford/ http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archives/2013/08/09/a-classic-album-by-the-john-carter-and-bobby-bradford-quartet-gets-the-proper-treatment http://www.pointofdeparture.org/PoD44/PoD44MoreMoments2.html
  9. Hey, thanks for your comments. They are so appreciated. I am very happy Mikewell liked the Fischer and in my opinion understood the depth and originality of it. And thank you to Amirbagachelles and Head Man for their kind words. It means a lot to me from this site.
  10. Thanks for your kind words on the Fischer. I think it is his magnum opus. Repeated listening get better and better for me.
  11. Thanks to all for your kind words and hope you enjoy it. Love that Carter Bradford Quartet and love that performance deeply. I think Ed did a nice job on the modern liner notes sheet. J.H.
  12. Dear All, Flight for Four is now done and being released in two weeks. On another topic has anyone heard the Flying Dutchman release: George Russell Presents Esoteric Circle, The ‎– The Esoteric Circle -- Flying Dutchman ‎– FD-10125? If so please let me know your impression of this for reissue. I have just ordered a copy of it and from my understanding it did come out in Japan on CD. But that would be all. Thank you.
  13. Slight correction. Flight for Four will be out 16 July 2013, not 1 July. I will have it ready by 1 July but it releases 16 July. Just for the record.
  14. Sorry to see Bruz Freeman's name misspelled in the "Editorial Review". Chuck Chuck I emailed the distributor to fix the typo on Amazon. I think the typo started with Flight for Four and was perpetuated on several vinyl albums from then on out. I fixed it on Flight for Four so the CD cover does not match the original Flight for Four vinyl in that regard and correctly so. Thanks for calling it to my attention in the Amazon blurb. I was sorry to see Funkateer not like Seeking but understand we're into taste here not law. But I find Seeking and even more so Flight for Four very structured, tight, and controlled in the good sense. It is free bop of course. But I believe if you listened over time you'd enjoy it. I love it for that very reason, that it is so tight and consistent in its concept and playing. And it will be out 1 July as we're printing the CD covers now as of today and the discs are already manufactured. Only the modern liner notes need printing now which get inserted as you all know. Hopefully, next I'll be able to slip in The Giant is Awakened before Flute Fever which has to come out in the Fall. Or it will just be Flute for Fever the rest of the year and then The Giant is Awakened beginning of next year.
  15. Thanks for asking. Carter Bradford is now well in progress. CD cover being printed in Tokyo. Checking color now. Master CD going out for manufacturing this week. Looks like it will be out pretty soon, like 4 - 6 weeks. Made first payment on leasing Tapscott The Giant is Awakened. One more payment and I have the rights to move forward. Plan to put that out late Summer. And end the year with Steig Flute Fever. Looks like some good music for this year. And speaking of Carter Bradford I need all of your help. I am looking for all writeups on Carter Bradford's group from the late 60s and early 70s. Even if you know I have it send me a link if you would. You can post it here which might be useful for posterity or you can send it to me at jonathanhorwich@me.com I'd like to include a very definitive write up of the group as an insert in the CD.
  16. Thanks all of your for your usual helpful and useful data. I agree with you Funkateer. The Carter/Bradford Quartet is one of the great units ever. And Flight for Four is a wonderful example of it if not their best. And I will have Domino on our version and the sound will please you. Flight for Four will be my next release and soon. And then I'll work on Horace Tapscott next. Steig will be the end of the year.
  17. Well this is an eye opener. I'm so so happy to hear this. I'm going to try and get Tapscott out as soon as I can. I had no idea. Thanks for all who gave me feedback. Still open for more. Steig will be coming out later in the year so it does not conflict with another release of Denny Zeitlin's. He asked me to put it out in Nov 2013 so that is on hold until then. Now I'll do Bradford and maybe slip in Tapscott.
  18. Again, thanks for your interest. I have the rights and am lined up to do both Carter Bradfords and the Tapscott Flying Dutchman. First is Flight for Four, which in my opinion is just killer good. And for those with the vinyl yes it is quite good, but as we have access to the master tapes I think you'll find the sound a jump up. Anyway, now that you know I have the rights to all three ( I think I mentioned it earlier), I need some objective feedback here. Do people on this site feel there is a public interest for the Tapscott Flying Dutchman. I'm a bit concerned about it. Maybe Chuck N. and Larry K. can jump in as they have experience with this. I think Flight for Four will sell about 750 CDs if I'm lucky. Maybe I'm off. Let me know what you guys think on Tapscott, The Giant Is Awakened, which I (correctly or incorretly) assume will sell less. I hope to be in a position in two years where I dont' care about sales and I just put out what is great and let it fly. But I'm not there yet so each investment in the CD reissues need to at least break even.
  19. Hey, thanks everybody. Very helpful. Well this shows there is a nice desire for the Daley in this kind of sophisticated group. Wish you guys were 25,000 strong. I'd be in clover. I have my strong opinions of the Carter/Bradford and the Steig but am trying to avoid pushing my own material on the site as it caused an objection last time which led two members to go back and forth on it, etc. So I try to stick to facts of what is what without tooting my own horn too much. Well, had I a choice I would do the Daley first. But for this year it will be Carter Bradford and Steig, both in very limited numbers. Then Daley in a three CD box set. My opinion (sorry JS Angry, I am going to toot so be warned) is that Russel Thorne on the Daley material is astounding and this alone is reason to put out this box set or no one will ever know what this guy could do. And on the live stuff, the trio is killler good. Hal Russel really is in the groove and they communicate so well. I love the stuff. So it will come out and hopefully next year as I accumulate funds and get it done. By the way the Steig set is a good two steps up from the vinyl because we have the full version of Lover Man (which George Avakian called a masterpice--and then proceeded for time reasons? to cut it down losing much of what made it so incredible). And we have one extra tracks of What is This Thing Called Love which I feel is fabulous Hence two of my favorite tracks were not really on the original vinyl. The Steig should be documented because I feel it is the finest straight ahead flute performance I have heard, not to mention Denny Zeitlin is completely in the zone on it. That's my two cents.
  20. Thanks on the kickstarter. I may do that but I hesitate to ask others for the money and then owe them that money. I've always been more comfortable making the money and then putting it out. I think I can make it and have made major progress in the last 4 months financially so I can support putting out great stuff. So I think I'll make it by next year for Daley. I think it will be around 20gs to do it right. Maybe 15gs. I may only put out 500 sets of it or 750. It will be a rare offering. I hear Hemphill CD is almost out now and that is that. Fischer did not sell well but I'm hoping it will slowly sell off even over several years. I love that work and hope it will get out to more people eventually. Thanks for your interest in the Daley. I love the stuff I put together for that. So much great material and ironically the best is the live stuff and the live stuff was never put out. So strange.
  21. Thanks. I still plan to do the Joe Daley for sure. My only hesitation is I've not had good luck on other reissues with those who own the rights. But if that doesn't become an issue I will put it out for sure. I just have to save the money up as it will cost a big chunk all at once as it will be a gorgeous box set. But within the next few years, yes. This year will be Steig and Carter/Bradford.
  22. Thanks for asking. It looks like I'll put out John Carter/Bobby Bradford Flight For Four and then Steig's Flute Fever. I'm putting the money together to move forward on the Carter/Bradford stuff. Music I adore, but guess that is obvious.
  23. Thanks Deepak. Yes, by using the original master tapes to digital and with very good A to D we are getting pretty good digital sound. Yes, I also sell analog copies of my master tapes and it is a small but rewarding "business." I enjoy it as tape is the best sound I've encountered yet although digital is getting closer and closer. Using the Nagra VI digital recorder at 192 is pretty spectacular. Anyway the tapes sell just enough to almost break even, well like my CD reissues. Thanks for asking.
  24. Thanks for asking. I am putting out Steig Flute Fever in early 2013 as well as Carter Bradford Flight for Four soon after. Only lack of funds is holding things up. The sound on Carter Bradford is stunning and so is the playing so hpefully it will be well received. Thanks for asking.
  25. Thank you all for your excellent input. Yes, Tapscott came out on that combined CD with Carter but I don't count that. But Clifford I have heard this before, that Hemphill's Dogon A.D. came out on CD. I have never been able to find or confirm that. Can you enlighten me further. I just was never able to find it. Thanks. Okay this is encouraging on the Tapscott. Very encouraging. I emailed Tom Albach just now. And Clifford thanks for your kind words on Fischer. That is a rough one as even on this forum (maybe the best or as good-as-it-gets-ears in jazz are here) it had some lukewarm reactions. Sob.
