  1. Jeez RDK, your avatar reminds me of a time when I stepped into a men’s room in Europe. It wasn’t the glory hole that gave me the willies nearly so much as the eye behind it.
  2. Well, if nothing else, it would give him a reason to stop using Mosaic’s customer review area as a BBS.
  3. I’m definitely a EmCee Five fan. Carr and Cox played off of each other so beautifully that I wonder what the group would have developed into, had they stayed together more than a couple years. And since their collective direction seemed to come more out of the ’50s than the early ’60s, I get the sense their recordings represented a starting point and were a work-in-progress. Stephenson was a joy, too. He had a touch of that Blakey thing that helped make each song its own animal. I just wish EmCee Five had recorded more.
  4. Well, if nothing else, the BNBB’s closure provided new home page fodder. It was long overdue for a revamp, too.
  5. I’ve wondered about the whole sticker concept. I mean, you want to eat healthy, right? Go to the supermarket, pick your produce, then go home and peal the sticker off. Except the sticker leaves a residue… Is the adhesive gum arabic or is it the usual ketone based stuff?
  6. I can understand why posting a response could be like dancing the Charleston amid a bouncing-Betty minefield. And, to be honest, I’m glad I haven’t lost a leg just for asking. But I ask earnestly, since I was just a mere babe when the controversy surrounding Ornette and Trane’s Vanguard recordings first hit. As is true for anyone who didn’t live through (or in this case, comprehend) a historic era, incomplete secondhand info is all that I have to work with. No, no deception is involved. I’m convinced that the reason Coltrane had support, though not universal, was due to his already having established himself as someone working within the tradition, but without being a slave to it. And without knowing the names of those charged with incompetence at the time, I’m also convinced the lack of credentials similar to Trane’s would cause an ugly uphill battle for anyone pursuing the free movement of the ’60s. I agree with you both, Sngry and John. Whether or not somebody is judged a poser will depend on the criteria applied. I must admit, critical opinion does color my own. Sometimes this goes to the long-term good. I’m not a fan of Cecil’s work, for example, but if it weren’t for Cecil’s ardent defenders, I doubt that I’d recognize this as exposing my own limitations, rather than Cecil’s. On the other hand, sometimes musician statements, like Sam Rivers’ remarking that free jazz is more fun to play than to listen to, also confuse the issue. Complicating the issue further, at least on the surface, are players who earned recognition before the ’60s, embraced free movement and then broke away again. Sonny Rollins, Jackie Mclean and Joe Henderson immediately come to mind. I used to think these guys tested the waters, didn’t care for the temperature, and abandoned the movement. But I now think it’s far more likely they explored new areas and incorporated what they discovered into already established personal styles. Still, I suppose anyone who didn’t overcome the brand of “charlatan” may be lost to a nameless footnote in jazz history.
  7. Brutal Joe doesn’t know if he should raise from the praise, or be spittin’ mad from the insult.
  8. Ha! Considering how he feels about the avant garde –and that he stopped playing, I think he washis own worst critic.
  9. 25? Good Lord, do I ever feel old and stupid!
  10. It’s not uncommon to run across some reference to no-playing mofos putting one over on the public during the free jazz movement of the ’60s. Apparently musicians could spot a poser, but the public had difficulty figuring out who had the stuff, from those who hadn’t mastered their instrument, let alone music’s history. Then there’s the story of Mingus beginning a show from behind a curtain, playing something resembling free jazz. The curtain lifted and revealed children hammering the instruments. Now, that’s a statement. Coltrane was relatively successful in his later period. Some didn’t care much for what he did and wondered why he was doing it, but nobody questioned his credentials. Was Trane not regarded by many as the father of free jazz? Well, at the very least, as its patron saint. I’ve often wondered if it was because of Trane’s background, known to the public, that his freer excursions were seriously listened to. Was Trane was the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval? Who were the charlatans? It’s not unusual to run across a generic charge, but rarely are names named. Off hand, I can think of only Charles Lloyd as being labeled a Coltrane imitator at best, and poser at worst —at one time. If that was the case, it seems he has more than redeemed himself since. Well, it’s time to get another root canal…
  11. In that case, can I be “Village Idiot Prime”? Hey, I just discovered Prez played with a PLASTIC reed! Never would have imagined…
  12. Everyone probably sees aric in a different fascination-to-disgust ratio. I do miss him, and I’ll say it again; for strictly selfish reasons. I think he sparked my BNBB creative juices to no end. Crafting responses to his stuff was very entertaining —if only to me. Perhaps it was not a terribly ethical thing to do, but that’s what happened. I’m not interested in resurrecting his posts, but for a variety of reasons, I can understand why folks do.
  13. I’ll wager Blue Note never expected the mass exodus. I doubt they could have foreseen that within a few days, sites would approximate their design and give jazzbos an alternative.
  14. Well crud, I just realized a flaw in my reasoning. Bouncing between two sites is just fine when replying to an existing topics, but I’m not much interested in starting the same topic on both boards at the same time. Details, details…
  15. I snuck a peek at the ol’ BNBB yesterday or the day before. Jeez, what a belligerent wasteland. Some long-standing members are now trying to get booted from the board? I suppose they’re being at least a little facetious. Still, I’m surprised I haven’t seen someone change their handle to “Tomatfuckyouall” or “Toadatbluenote” and post something like: “You ungrateful bastards! Where were you when Greg Osby needed your support at his Blue Note show in New York last year? We put a lot of time, effort and money into that talented man’s career and you all ****ed him, and me, in the ***. I’ve spent the last year kissing Nora’s *** and paying off radio programmers, and you dickwads ***** and whine for dusty old **** normal health people hate. You mother****ing ****heads! **** you all!” The village idiot in me has struck yet again, but please, please don’t anybody get any ideas at this point.
  16. I’m split between here and AAJ so I’m unable to cast a vote. For the moment, I like the idea of having more than one place to go. Human nature being what it is, I expect I’ll call a home-site sometime in the future —but I see no reason to rush the process.
  17. For what it’s worth Chuck, not just ex-BNBBers are asking your return to AAJ. One of the AAJ-ers, amid his defense of Pharaohrock, also said: “…as a matter of fact I am fucking pissed (see, you guys can swear in here without asterisks...please don't insult my intelligence, just use the damn word) to see that it drove away one of my idols, who was just starting to post here. To have been able to have had an ongoing discussion with Chuck Nessa would have been just as good to me as having Ron Kittle on my AIM buddy list (go ahead and make fun, I'm an unabashed White Sox fan).” As Bfrank said, every bulletin board has its boneheads. Hell, I freely admit to suffering from village idiot syndrome, so even this board has one (I’ll try and keep my thumb out of my Wingy, but I can’t make promises I won’t keep). There were days when the only site I visited was the BNBB. For me, there really wasn’t an alternative. Now there’s two boards of equal interest, so I expect to split my time between this board and AAJ.
  18. I left graphic design shortly before the internet craze, but that mindset still forces its way to the surface from time to time. “Flash”? I’ve seen the end results, but I don’t have a clue to the programming. Maybe virginity is renewable!
  19. So I downloaded a trial gif animator a couple days ago, and I’ve been going through a steep learning curve instead of sleeping. AAJ has seen this avatar go through countless iterations, so I’m pleased to present the final product for my debut here. By the way, if it doesn’t seem to be doing anything, that’s by design. Perpetual-motion avatars are too distracting for my taste, so there’s 12 seconds of freeze-frame calm interrupted by just a tiny spurt of activity. Hmm, minimalist animation —I think I’m on to something! Congradulations, B3er! Looks like you put in a lot of effort, and in short period of time, too. You built it and they’re coming!
