  1. This Friday, February the 2nd, is Bandcamp Friday where they waive their revenue share of all purchases. I'm going to buy these two titles for sure: Howz 'bout yooz guyz? Whatcha gonna buy?
  2. I'm not here to change anyone's mind, but I rather like the original composition. It's the orchestrations of the piece that I dislike. Grofé orchestrated it from Gershwin’s solo piano version shortly before it's 1924 premiere. In addition to the original solo piano arrangement, Gershwin made a 2-piano version that included parts left out of the solo arrangement. In 1926, Grofé orchestrated it for a larger orchestra. Grofé would orchestrate it again for full orchestra in 1942. This is the version used on most recordings over the next 30+ years. In 1976, Michael Tilson Thomas reintroduced the original jazz band version. You can get a sense of Gershwin's original idea from this recording of piano rolls: Here's an example of Gershwin's 2-piano arrangement: And MTT's modern recording of the original jazz band version: I enjoy most the piano versions (solo and duo), and to a lesser degree the original jazz band arrangement under the direction of MTT.

Laine died "peacefully" Tuesday morning at his home following "health setbacks" from interstitial lung disease, his wife, Elizabeth Hines, shared on his Facebook page. obit
  10. From what I gather from other members, no Allen, you are not alone. At the same time, you're probably the only one here who would create a thread to express your hatred of another artist. Certainly not the first time you've done this, and probably not the last. With your vast knowledge and experience, I'd much rather see a thread about musicians you really admire, artists you think I should check out. Larry K does this from time to time, and I appreciate his efforts. Then again, curmudgeons are gonna curmudge. Too bad.
  11. No, the world isn't binary, but I'm afraid that the country you and I live in has become so.
  12. Max Roach Viti and Sonny Rollins Viti, aged 17
  13. As my mom used to say, "No good deed goes unpunished." Yeah, I know, a real ray of sunshine. 🤷‍♂️
  14. Nice try, jazzcorner, but Michael correctly answered this question 20 years ago.
  15. These two claims: "assembled from rare and unreleased material" and "audio restored and remastered by Bernie Grundman" have me interested.
  16. Au contraire mon frère. This is a serious discussion of medical research!
  17. I was also hesitant to read the article. I was afraid I'd finish it too fast and make a mess of it. I was joking too.
