  1. Hard to understand why MPS in Germany never reissued this on CD. The Japanese CD goes for rather high prices, or I would have got me one. I must be careful about my spendings ....
  2. Hard to pick just a few, there are so many great one. Some that sping to my mind: https://www.discogs.com/release/2584731-Geoff-Keezer-Zero-One https://www.discogs.com/release/5265269-Bernie-Worrell-Elevation-The-Upper-Air .... and some solo Duke Ellington, and some Paul Bley.
  3. Now that the Mosaic set of Don Byas sessions is announced, I looked what else might be of interest. I just ordered a copy of a compilation of his Vogue sessions, https://www.discogs.com/release/14897775-Don-Byas-Lover-Man/image/SW1hZ2U6NDQ4OTQ5NDY=:: When looked it uo in the Lord Disco, I found considerable overlap with another Vogue reissue I already have, https://www.discogs.com/release/5587403-Don-Byas-Featuring-Mary-Lou-Williams-Trio-Beryl-Booker-Trio-Don-Byas/image/SW1hZ2U6MTE4ODE5MTk=: I almost regretted the order of the former CD, but whem I compared the discographical data of the latter CD with ihe data in the Lord Disco, I found out that Lord got this reissue totally wrong and the overlap is minimal. We had a similar discussion abot one Trummy Young session that's not in the Mosaic, and contrary to the data in Lord, probably was never issued. My warning is: Never trust the data in Lord without consulting a second source! There a a lot of errors or inexact data. This is not to diminish his effots, but the sheer amount of data makes such errors inevitable. Specialist discographies on labels or single srtists will always be more accurate, and Lord will be the first to admit this. Just be careful when you post info, alway state your sources,a nd try to be as accurate as possible. Discographical research can be a pian in certain body parts, but it is wotrth it and helps the collectors community. So in the end I can recommend these two Vogue CDs. Another great one is this from late in his career: What else can you recommend, besides the sessions missing from the Mosaic that are discussed already in the respective thread?
  4. This EP with the Modern Jazz Quartet's first four tracks on Prestige was in the collection of my older brother's finacée, who jobbed at a record shop at the time. I didn't understand a note, but it grabbed my attention. Their music still fascinates me after all these years, culminating in a discography research project. John Lewis' perfect balance - IMHO - of composition and improvisation formed my own esthetics about jazz. Hearing this music and seeing the band perform in 1974 was a revelatory experience, percussionist Bill Summers inspired me to take up percussion seriously, his complete approach including ethnomusicology was my ideal. He was delighted to hear that when I introduced myself to him at a Hancock concert during the Dis Is Da Drum tour. And I learned so much from Herbie as far as rhythmic aspects of improvisation is concerned, the Mwandishi band albums being extremely important. Then there is Mongo Santamaria and Cal Tjader, my idol on conga drums and inspiring me to reasearch and publish their discographies.
  5. Maybe you are right and I miscounted. Meanwhile I discovered a second compliation CD on Musicraft. Each of the two has 17 tracks, so still not everything covered. It seems Lord's data are incorrect if you compare to the listing here: http://www.78discography.com/Signiature.htm No Trummy Young release in that list!
  6. Not enough music for a Mosaic set. 42 tracks including three alternates. It was all on 4 LPs, each running between 30 and 40 minutes. Only one compilation CD, though. The 4 tracks with Byas were on Vol. 2:
  7. Among smaller labels from the 1930's and 1040's, Signature would make a great box set, even though the Hawkins, and Dickie Wells with Pres sides had been included in previous sets. The label is under BMG control, so licensing shouldn't be the problem. The classic jazz sides all were available at some time or another. No idea how interesting the other recordings are. http://www.78discography.com/Signiature.htm I second Chuck's recommendation. https://www.discogs.com/label/451017-Apollo-Series
  8. They are not aiming at collectors like us but at the jazz newbies who would rather go for a newly made jazz vinyl hype issue.
  9. Sometimes I think you develop your ideas in youth, and spend your life as an artist trying to refine them. Once you reach that point, what will you do? Few musician re-invented themselves completely. I think Tony Williams did after 1970. I wouldn't blame Sonny, you have to make a living - I only think he played his solos much too long in the last 20 or 30 years.
  10. 10 CDs - wow! Since I have most of what will be left off and have rather little of what's included, I will try to save up the funds for it, once Jazz Messengers offer it. What always drives me mad about these sets is when they omit a track just because the musician featured didn't play on it, like the one track from the Dizzy Gillespie session. I think they should keep such important sessions complete.
  11. Dave Brubeck was told to fire Gene Wright, but refused. George Shearing encountered similar situations - guess what he told agents and others why he did not care. I should mention I once lost a gig with a Kurdish singer, the agent who was very satisfied with our playing told me the concert venue managers wanted "a more ethnic" sound and thought a German bassist and percussionist did not fit into that concept. Now she has all Kurdish/Turkish players (on part Western instruments) and does world tours. I don't mind, as she deserves her success, but this kind of thinking sickens the world. A month ago a German didgeridoo player lost an important gig because the concert venue manager accused him of cultural usurpation. I am waiting for the day when somebody wants to forbid me playing African drums. Many shades of the same crazy attitude. People fighting integration, trying to defend a purity of culture that vanished long ago.
  12. Same cover artist! https://www.discogs.com/artist/365399-Mati-Klarwein
  13. Since yesterday, several Teddy Charles sessions:
