  1. One of the best line-ups I ever saw live in a single evening was perhaps one of the first jazz concerts (maybe the first?) I ever attended in around 1968.

The Berkeley Jazz Festival- Max Roach with Abbey Lincoln, Archie Shepp, and closing with a solo set from Sonny Rollins...

There were many other ones- single days at Monterey, LAJI (Count Basie members),and Chicago and Detroit Festivals-but the Berkeley Festival I remember fondly.

Not so much, though, the hard brick stairs of the Greek Theater...;)

  2. I received an email today from publicist, Lydia Liebman, stating that saxophonist, Jeff Clayton, passed away yesterday from cancer. I was lucky enough to see Jeff and his brother John play in the Clayton Brothers group which included Terell Stafford. He was also part of the Clayton Hamilton jazz orchestra for many years. He was 65 years old

  3.  I have an extra Shorty Rogers booklet (un-numbered) in very good shape.

Does anyone need a Shorty Rogers booklet to complete their set?

I also have an extra OKeh/Brunswick Bix, Trumbauer,Teagarden (black box  only) for anyone who needs one..

Let me know in a PM if you are interested in either.in a small trade or ??

    -Jeff

  4. Time for me to return the favor...

Thanks to Romualdo's help here I was able to score a Shorty black box to complete my set (I already had the CDs and booklet).from Kingbeer Records.off Ebay.

My box came with another booklet.

Now I have an extra Shorty Rogers booklet (un-numbered) in very good shape.

Send me a PM if interested and we can work out something..:D

  5. I know this is a long shot, but I thought I would try anyway...

I have all 4 CDs in excellent condition. I also have the booklet. What I do NOT have is the actual Box. I know some folks out there take the CDs and booklets out and set the boxes aside. Might there be any one, pretty please, that would be willing to part with their Shorty Rogers Box itself..??

  6. I've been waiting for this release for some time now. My wife was a classmate of Danny at Palo Alto High School. He discussed it with her last year at their 50-year High School reunion. I kind of expected this to be released on Resonance.

I am wondering whether the extra expense for the vinyl would be worth ordering it over the CD?

  7. I watched the Butterfield documentary last night on Amazon Prime-Excellent.

I lost track of Paul after the early Bloomfield years.

His use of horns(more than just one sax) brought a new dimension to electric blues bands anchored by guitar/harp combos.

Plus his acceptance by the old timers (Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf) helped open up white audiences to this genre, and as previously mentioned here, would revitalize their careers. The interviews in the doc (especially by Elvin Bishop) were enlightening...
