Unless I'm misunderstanding you, try listening through this album as the second half is more than just the duo. They're joined by Evan Parker, Byron Wallen, Tori Handsley, Sarathy Korwar (check out his debut for an astonishing album) ao. Basically the second LP of 'Journey...' is the band that's caught live on the latest LP to such great effect. Ok, just now read your next post where you were onto the second half so will presumably have realised the added delights. Their first album 'Dem Ones', on Gearbox, was just the duo Whilst I wouldn't be quite so negative I do agree with some of your analysis here. I think Boyd Moses drums with the knowledge of rhythms and drumming that have happened since '66. I'm also not too sure that many people have made many claims of originality upthread. Thirty years ago I read the Hugh Thomas history and Orwell and others. I think that exhausted my need to read about it for quite a while. When I used to take annual holidays in Spain back in 80s/90s I was still very interested in it. I suspect these chapters my reignite an interest. My interest is often still piqued by novels set then. The chapters about pre-war Barcelona sent my mind back to Mendoza's 'City Of Marvels', a marvellous book as I recall

Lots of entertaining reminiscing from EP about Lacy and more informed "research" from Wright. I think EP was struggling with the heat too

Last night, Evan Parker and Seymour Wright talking about, analysing and occasionally playing the music of Steve Lacy. Unfortunately furnace conditions in Cafe Oto meant I bailed at half time. Well worth it to hear EP play Monk and to see the rare sight of him sight reading (only previously witnessed with the Kenny Wheeler Large Ensembe, I think) as he said "I don't often play notated music". Which was a bit of an understatement in itself.

Very much enjoying this. Thanks Brad! Reigniting my latent interest in things Spanish and memories of trips to both cities.
