  1. What a loss. I've had many of his solography books for years and find his more recent online files quite handy. I was in contact with him a few times over the years and found him quite pleasant and helpful. RIP Jan.
  2. Same here. I picture a stack of Byas boxes waiting to be picked up.
  3. It was a mistake. Mosaic sent me a cd with the missing version by Prima.
  4. Good show. My first time seeing him live. Lloyd was very lyrical at times. My wife loved it as well. As expected, he played tenor and flute, but he also played a reddish/brownish straight saxophone (a stritch, perhaps?) at the beginning of his first encore. It looked somewhat like a rosewood clarinet, but it sounded like a saxophone. I just looked online. It was a tárogató.
  5. Went last night to see Charles Lloyd (with Jason Moran, Eric Harland, and Reuben Rogers) in Boston.
  6. Chuck, There was an exhibit of artwork by Pee Wee Russell and George Wettling (who had studied with Stuart Davis) at Wilkes College in 1986. The exhibition booklet is available here: https://www.wilkes.edu/about-wilkes/arts/sordoni-art-gallery/past-exhibitions/_assets/_pdf_archives/1986-April-27-Pee-Wee-Russelland-Geaorge-Wettling.pdf. There's some useful information there about his paintings. I have a copy as well as a copy of the exhibition poster. Jon
  7. Perhaps this? https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=114798&forumID=7&archive=0
  8. The information posted earlier in the thread (appended below) is correct. >>> Stuff Smith And His Orchestra : Jonah Jones (tp,vcl) George Clarke (ts,vcl) Stuff Smith (vln, vcl) Sam Allen (p,celesta-1) Bernard Addison (g) John Brown (b) Herbert Cowans (d). New York, September 1939 >>> Some of the names on the label appear to be either made up (contractual reasons?) or just wrong.
  9. I think that he lived on the same street that I did when I was a kid. Of course, I had no idea who he was at the time.
  10. I was in NYC over the weekend. I can confirm the prevalence of weed odors on the street.
  11. Wettling studied with Stuart Davis. Wettling took art lessons from him and gave drum lessons to Stuart Davis in return.
  12. A real “sleeper” I imagine. Sorry, couldn’t resist! 😀 I hope it turns up.

  14. The eagle has landed. Arrived last evening.
  15. Yes, I have a lot of Ellington 78s.
  16. I think I have an album of Mancini tunes that he and Phil Woods recorded.
  17. JATP box now up for pre-order: https://www.mosaicrecords.com/product/classic-jazz-at-the-philharmonic-jam-sessions-1950-1957-mosaic-records/

I recommend the release on Timeless.
  19. Well, this sounds exciting (not): >>>>> WUSF’s General Manager JoAnn Urofsky told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that the jazz show “will be replaced with great public radio programs beginning Monday, October 31.” Those programs include the news program “1A Plus,” the current affairs show “As It Happens” and the second hour of “Science Friday,” which highlights entertaining stories about science and technology. “The changes mean WUSF 89.7 will become entirely focused on news and information, including weather and safety, so we can better serve the residents of Florida.” >>>>> The article mentions Vic Hall as a frequent guest. I remember him from the record bashes in New Jersey.
  20. How about banjo, tuba, and clarinet? M 'N' M Trio: Jimmy Mazzy, Eli Newberger, and Joe Muranyi:
  21. Ghost, Do you know Powell's 1987 session for Chiaroscuro? It's rather good.
