  2. John's right i'm still waiting for my copy of MIngus Mingus Mingus ! From the choices above I'd go for Jackknife.
  3. just seen this posted on the jazzwise website www.jazzwise.blogspot.com Miles Davis' concert at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 is to be released on DVD. Up until now, only one truncated track from this performance - "Call It Anything" - has been made available as part of a compilation DVD/video featuring other artists from the festival. The rrp of the new DVD appears to be £15.99, and it's released on 16th June 2003. posted by Grant at 2:30 PM could be very interesting indeed! Anybody else heard anything about this release ?
  4. I dont know what it is about this tiltle , I love Wayne's acoustic music , some of the other musicians are among my favourites , i love this style of jazz - but this CD does absolutely nothing for me & I cant seem to put my finger on why . i bought it about a year ago & have to make an effort to put it on - when i read last week it was to be CD of the week i have played it nearly everyday (& once this morning ) but no - still nothing . Anyway c'mon what's next week ??? I may need to order it to take part.

  7. Modernistic is great check out the piano version of Afrika Baambataa's 'Planet Rock'.
  8. I struggle to get the time to listen to all the jazz i want to listen to . On the 1% of listening time thats not jazz its Aphex Twin Radiohead The Beatles Johnny Cash Daniel Johnson (if i can find any)
  9. Thanks clunky - it looks as if i'll have to keep a look out on Ebay for the Sam Rivers & see if it ever pops up .
  10. This is definately my favourite purchase of the year so far , if i see mr Moncur's name on the back of any Cds in future I'll take it as a recommendation. Its also opened my ears to Jackie McClean & i've gone back and bought a couple of Conns (Jacknife & Vertigo ) . I think Bobby Hutcherson & Tony Williams sounded perfect together . Any more recommendations in this style out there ??
  11. At least on this site their doesn't seem to be a mad drummer who hates us Brits on the rampage.
  12. It shouldnt be too long - I'm in the UK also
  13. My copy's just arrived today !
  14. Its not just me then mine's still not here (i was just about to hit the panic button) Ghost Of Miles, those comments are better than my usual 'Why are you listening to that old man's music ??' My wife HATES jazz . I did get my own back , we have 2 very young kids she spends all day with & she tends to go to bed soon after they do - we were recently shopping , i bought her a cd of her choice which was the new Emenem CD . She gets it home & realise its packed with bad language & she cant play it because the kids are always around ! She hates it -when we get in the car my 2 year old son points to the stereo - when i put jazz on he puts his thumb in his mouth and starts moving his fingers up & down - I cant think where he gets it from!
  15. i've just caught the Mosaic bug with the first selects & was wondering how far in advance of release date do Mosaic usually start pre - orders for their new releases ?
  16. Hello John , it'll be interesting to see how long it takes me to get mine now you have you's seeing we live so far apart Coincidently i've just got the Sonny Rollins prestige box set from Ebay. A great box , terrible info on the sleeves though. Great comment from the wife ! Could be the start of a new thread - My wife the critic. Best comment from mine , i was playing some Electric Miles whilst in the kitchen , she shouted 'have you got an elephant out there with you ?'
  17. Great shout Jad! I'd totally forgotten about that , in fact i'm surprised it doesn't get mentioned more on this (and ex) boards. I certainly got value for money with this one , i got it a couple of years ago - it took a couple of months of regular listening before i could work out what was going on - then it just clicked . I play it regularly still - but have to be in the right mood .
  18. yep - interpretations of Sonny Rollins tunes i think.
  19. Has anybody picked up the new Vandermark 5 CD ' Airports of Light' yet ? I'm waiting for mine via airmail , so have to wait for a bit yet . Any initial thoughts from those lucky enough to have it already ?
  20. its by no means an all time classic , but why not try 'free jazz classics Vol1 & 2' by the Vandermark 5 . Its 2 CDs of their interpretations of tracks by Ornette, Archie Shepp , Eric Dolphy etc . Its an excellent buy & may give you some pointers of what artists to look out for , it has for me since it was recommended to me by another member of this board. Albert Ayler - 'Spritual Unity ' or 'Spririts Rejoice' 2 fine ,fine CDs.
  21. YEAH ! that was me , thanks . & no doubt next time i hear a bit of release date news i'll be beside myself with excitement & i'll start another one.
  22. Agreed , these 2 selects have both introduced new artists to me & i hope the series carries on in this vain . I must admit i prefer the Moncur III box , as its reflects my usual jazz preferences . But i really like the first album on the Jones set & the folk sessions.
  23. I used to be Selim , you know Selim the guy who used to pop up in the miles threads , asked loads of questions that nobody answered & had an uncanny knack of kiliing a thread stone dead . Well any way there was a guy on the Blue Note site called selim on there and that was me .

    Birth of the Cool

If you do go for the RVG I'm reasonably sure the live material is on the Young Miles Proper box
