Los Angeles Jazz Institute West Coast Jazz Heritage Series BEBOP INVADES THE WEST Celebrating Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker’s Historic Los Angeles Debut Friday, August 29, 2014 8:30pm Los Angeles Musicians Union Auditorium 817 Vine St., Hollywood featuring Jazz Legends Charles McPherson and Jon Faddis with Charlie Shoemake, Tom Ranier and more In December of 1945 Dizzy Gillespie brought an all star sextet to Hollywood for an 8 week engagement at Billy Berg’s Nightclub. It was a significant event in Los Angeles jazz history which brought the creators of modern jazz to the West Coast. In addition to Bird and Dizzy the group included Milt Jackson, Al Haig, Ray Brown and Stan Levey. To celebrate this momentous occasion we return to Vine St. to present an incredible all star sextet performing the bebop classics that were introduced to West Coast audiences during that historic engagement. August 29 is also Charlie Parker’s birthday so it will be a double celebration and a night you won’t want to miss. We’re having a special pre-concert dinner/party in this historic location which will include a screening of Billy Berg’s home movies from 1945-46 and rare broadcast recordings from the club. Come Swing With Me A Jazz/Big Band Tribute to Frank Sinatra October 21-24, 2010 at The Los Angeles Airport Marriott Frank Sinatra’s impact on American Popular Music knows no equal but his impact on jazz and jazz musicians is just as profound. His creativity and phrasing, along with his impeccable sense of time has been studied and admired by jazz musicians since he first came on the scene in the early 1940s. Come Swing with Me celebrates the many facets of Sinatra’s career with film showings, panel discussions, special presentations and a number of “concept” concerts showcasing the composers, arrangers, lyricists and sidemen who were intregal parts of the Sinatra legacy. Many Sinatra alumni are being featured in the various ensembles as well as leading their own groups. In addition to the concerts that feature jazz interpretations of music associated with Sinatra, we’re also presenting several concerts featuring a variety of outstanding vocalists singing the classic arrangements. The vocalists we’ve chosen are not Sinatra imitators in any way shape or form. They are among the finest interpreters of the Great American Songbook on the scene today; all with their own unique style and approach. We’ve also added several special events that take place throughout the festival including an after hours “Jilly’s” venue and a bus tour of Frank Sinatra’s Hollywood.
