  1. Congrats! You're better than you think! But the tenor player on 2-6 still has to be identified ... The channel separation on these tracks was somewhat changed through the convsersion to flac files, and even the burning, although I used the lowest spped my burner accepted. It is less obvious on the original CD. Sorry for that, but the CD I took it from is still available. Some more folks in for guesses? Thks Mike, i'm eager to read your list so I can add these to my collection. Going to have good times in July tchuss Michel
  2. As expected, i could hardly identify any of the tracks...Just a feeling of having already heard that one...but of course! here are some lines DISC 1 1. Great tune, very good guitar player, the sound is clean and well balanced 2.Good tune, good swinging, I like the chord playing on the Hammond here : possibly Bill doggett or Milt Buckner? 3.Maybe Freddie roach, the guitar player reminds me partly of Grant Green, but less typical. 4.Excellent, colourfull, groovin' No idea who it might be but I kike it very much 5.Sounds like melvin Rhyne and wes, but not sure he is really the guitar player 6.No idea 7. The only track I dislike...no idea 8. perhaps Rhoda Scott here..? DISC2 1.Could be Don Patterson 2.Very good theme, right mood, right recording. I like this one very much. maybe Charles Earland? 3. sounds like McDuff, but you said he wasn't part of the BFT. Exciting track 4. No idea, just don'rt like it... 5.Sounds like lary Young before he went mas! 6. Excellent track, modern enough, inventive, musical, my favorite one. possibly Bernstein and Goldings? 7. Good playing here, despite the poor theme : these guys should sound great in a better repertoire. 8.Don Patteron, probably. Pity for the "hole in the middle" effect of the recording, too much separation between channels; now then this will probably result in throwing me out of the Organissimo forum, but I spent an excellent hour listening to your discs, Mike...somewhat like the last rhum and cigarette before walking to the electric chair..
  3. Thanks Mike, the 2 cd's arrived yesterday in my box and I could not wait to give them a listen... Excellent selection, covering a wide range of styles, very good sound quality, some tunes are really hot, this makes me a happy man. except I can't identify even one track..! and I thought I was knowledgeable in the Hammond field Promised : i'll try hard to write something, er, ..something about this BFT Thanks again for this very exciting test
  4. Hi Mike, yes, I'd be glad to participate. download option is fine for me. Take care Michel
  5. Hi Jim, i came to the same conclusion, regarding the distortion problem I encontered recently...too much output from the xk3 overloading the 3300 input. Lowering the output level from the XK3 works fine...but is such a mismatch between xk3 and 3300 some kind of design mistake ?unless the xk3 and 3300 wre not really designed to work together without adjustments? I have a next session in july, together with some B3's : i'll let you know whether these new settings solve the problem definitively; (noway I can change the se of tubes, unfortunately, not my instrument)
  6. Might want to check this on YouTube :
  7. Actually, I ran into his records upon recommendation from guitarist Bob Devos.Bob is a superb player and he definitely loves the Hammond, so his word is really valuable for me : bought 2 CD's , Street talk and Urban Paradise... Both are very good, excellentlly recorded and feature excellent programs ; The format for Street talk is the usual org.guit.drms + guests David Newman and Houston Person and flutist Dave Valentin and i find playin this cd unusually often. Bob plays guitar on the Street talk album, and is also the producer, makin it my favorite of the 2 albums. Unfortunately, the booklets do not give lots of info : italian origin, born in the New York area, a father musician and band leader taught him accordion and organ, main influence is of course jimmy Smith etc.. Anyway, I highly recommend Vince Seneri in Street talk
  8. You won't find the complete piano works of Debussy under his name, but, if you like this music, you really shouldn't neglect the recordings of the great Czech pianist Ivan Moravec : these are the most colourful, exquisite renditions of works like Images I and II, suite bergamasque, Préludes, hommage à Rameau, pour le piano ondine and others I have ever heard. They should still be available under the label Vox and Supraphon : at the time of recording (1969) they made the Connoisseur company famous for the quality of the playing and the recorded sound. Unfortunately, many of the Debussy-Connoisseur have not yet been released in CD format ...one more reason to grab the still existing ones! You might have a look at this site : http://www.ivanmoravec.net/albums/al-cdx5103.html
  9. One of he many recordings Lou made with the "Bennett machine" is as follows :Now hear my Meaning, for MASrecords in Barcelona 1993. More infos and sample tracks here : http://www.lou-bennett.org/meaning/index.htm
  10. You might add Lou Bennett to the short list. When he lived in Paris and Spain, he completely modified his B3 , adding MIDI features and others, to call it the "Bennett Machine". I believe many recordings have been made with this instrument : I need some time to check it out, if you like
  11. Re this organist: as Rob Schepps might say: 'I'm not familiar with his work'. FWIW: You have the same last name as a nice guitarist from NJ who plays in a lot of organ groups: Bob Devos. Red Holloway is damn underrated. Nothing wrong with 'originals' as long as they're good. It's true too many aren't. But IMO a few more good songs in the world can only help----as long as someone's listening. Dead right fasstrack : what's unacceptable is poor musical quality which is so often present in "originals" (mostly, they're not original at all!). You mention Bob Devos, which I had the opportunity to record during his european tour : he's an extremely nice guy, a phenomenal guitar player AND a very good composer : I really enjoyed his compositions, most of them are on his last two CD's for Savant, I think; And, yes, the man loves the Hammond...you can hear that!
  12. Glad to hear about the new Red Holloway CD : I checked at amazon and, yes, it smokes. Even Chris Foreman sounds good on this one, which I did not expect, having heard him only on the very boring "Live at the Green Mill". The conjunction of a drivin leader and excellent material (jobim, Rollins, Carmichael, Gershwin) is probably responsable for the wakin'up of Chris Foreman : let's hope he keeps movin' in that direction. By the way, don't you think most of the "original" tunes that plague so many CD's do participate to the loss of interest in music we see today..?Just curious..
  13. I essentially like the guitar associated with the organ, in trio form or quartet. Here are a few CD's I have enjoyed thru the years; Eddie McFadden with Jimmy Smith "Groovin' at Small's Paradise" Bob Devos - Guitar Groove and Shifting sands Grant Green with John Patton Mosaic Select There is also an excellent player performing with Ray Charles on his Olympia 2000 DVDV/CD, but I can't remember his name...
  14. Exactly the way I did it...but probably the player modified the output level during the performance. Would that be the reason he setup the Leslie in an awkward position, looking straght into the left side of the XK3 and within range of his left hand, or are the controls activated from the XK3 itself?
  15. Thanks for your input. I seems to coroborate the distortion I hear might come from fiddling with the preamp output level (why I recognized as a kind of "tube overload" noise). It was also noted during the session wich took place during two evenings of 3 sets for a total playing time of around 6 hours that the output level from the 3300 continually increased, making input levels adjustments an absolute necessity : that amounted up to 5 db between set 1 and set 6
  16. Hi Jim, I read your review with interest, since I just had an opportunity to record an XK3 coupled to this Leslie 3300. From the start, I was taken aback, since I expected the session to be made with a B3, for which I had prepared Doug's little direct injection box and found instead the unknown (to me) XK3...The session being live recorded, I decided to take no risk and use only KM184 mikes, 2 of them close to the upper and lower speakers of the Leslie. My impression on stage and when listening afterwards is effectively a certain lack of deep bass, some bloating effect around 150Hz, but this probably due to the room's acoustics and also, I'm afraid, some kind of bass distortion appearing when the expression pedal ,is used. I checked after the 1st set and, to be on the safe side, switched on the attenuator on the two mikes and adjusted the levels on the console, but with no effect... This shows clearly this distortion came from the Leslie XK3 combination, but is this intended, to simulate the older tube saturation distortion (grunge?) or what ; I must say the effect is not unpleasant, but really unexpected from this kind of modern equipment...I agree with you that the amount of acoustic power is really amazing, but at the expense of deep bass. Curious to read your comments on this
  17. I think it was something like "Jimmy Smith plays the Wersi organ, but it was never available in Europe and I never heard it...
  18. I rather like "The heatin' system" .Moreover, excellently recorded.
  19. Here is a link to a smoking clip featuring Rhoda and 2 other girls playing in Budapest. The drummer is really good..! PS : I just noticed this clip has already been recommended...sorry about that! Anyway, it is still great!
  20. Huh? Where does it say so on their site? I just checked and they still say they'll ship their stuff to almost anywhere in the world (yes, including even Europe). Hey KYO, it looks like you're right..! I checked the site right now and it says so.. I think I saw definitely this for CDU but I remember it was in association with Google...not sure anymore. Anyway, this is a relief : CDU is a reliable on line supplier
  21. My usual second hand and new cd's went recently out of business and I have noticed CD Universe doesn't care to ship to Europe anymore... Would anybody care to recommend a couple of good and reliable online shops willing to take my orders at a reasonable cost? Thks for your help
  22. Never seen these ones on CD, I'd like to be proven wrong... Jimmy McGriff A bag full of soul Solid State Freddie Mac Coy Lonely avenue Prestige
  23. I'm listening now to the japanese RVG issued in 1998 (minisleeve LP facsimile). While the sound stage is not wide, one can't say it is near mono, in my view. The stereo spacing is subtle, but real : that can esasily be checked using the mono /stereo switch.Since I bought this copy from Japan earlier this year, maybe it is still another remastering: it shows on the front cover a red band with white letters 24 bit by RVG-Limited edition in memory of Alfred Lion. However, I would welcome any sonic improvement in a US RVG, this album really deserves it...By the way, this one let me to the discovery of the fantastic Fred Jackson's Hootin and Tootin'.Great!
  24. Definitely...but not only this tune .Sonnymoon for two, Johnny comes marchin' home, What's new are astonishing. Actually, this was my first JOS lp bought in 1962 : it started a buying frenzy of organ records that is still there today. On top of my JOS list, together with Groovin' at Small's, Bashin'.Glad to read those gems are not forgotten!
