  1. BFrank, I haven't had a chance to A/B it yet but the RVG sounds very good. One thing I can almost say without hesitation......it will be a little louder!!!
  2. First thing I noticed about the Byrd RVG as well. As you said, it isn't important but it does make you wonder what was behind this decision. I was curious if that was the color used on the original release....
  3. Rooster, I predict that you will have read every "book" that Mr. Ervin has "written" with in a very short period of time! Love them all. Each one unique in its own way. He is a monster......and a Texan! Gotta love it!!! Enjoy!

    New K2's

I agree with you about the K2's. They really do a wonderful job with the remastering in the vast majority of cases. Glad to hear the new Bill Evans is vastly improved. I am looking forward to that one.
  5. Hi Moose, No offense taken. I really didn't have a problem with Dr. J's comments either, except to the extent that they came completely out of the blue. Like I said, I have bought my share of duplicate RVG's. Sometimes I like the RVG better than the original and sometimes I don't, but in all instances, I have to turn down the volume on the RVG. Anyway, no bones to pick with you Moose about your applause........but about that copy of Evolution that Ralphie Boy was selling that you recently beat me to, now that is quite another story! Take care. I enjoy your post. You are a great asset to this board.
  6. BeBop, I used to do a lot of traveling before I was laid off so I guess in some ways you should count your blessings. American Airlines was certainly guilty of the same thing, but my biggest complaint was that they seldom changed the program. I would tune into the Jazz Channel and a week later when I flew again, it would be the exact same program. I do remember a rather nice version of Good Morning Morning Glory but I listened to it so many times I can still hear it in my head... Like I said, they solved my problem for me but I don't think you would like that solution very much. If I were you I would go the CD player route and if it gets "lost" along the way, be thankful you can just go to the store and buy another one.
  7. Morganized - I may not have been clear enough here, hopefully I haven't offended you. Actually, if you'll note I started my post with the clear phrase "Nothing personal..." precisely because my words were not directed specifically at you. Rather, I felt you were bringing up a topic that has been discussed here before, often by people who have an axe to grind with the whole RVG series. I didn't think you were doing that. I guess I feel a bit differently than you do - you feel that people often presuppose the RVGs are superior. In my view there are many more people around here who seem eager to slam the US RVG series (particularly the TOCJ crowd), more than those who defend it. Really though I personally don't care - people should listen to what they want to, regardless of series. I just rankle when in the past folks have tried to claim the only thing added by the RVG's is loudness. Again, my tin ear comment was meant in that vein, NOT directed at you personally. It was also mostly in jest, although I could see how people might take offense. I do believe though that some people are much more capable of hearing subtle things in audio than others, and sometimes those who can't nay say the abilities of others. Anyway, so sorry if my post came off as being directed at you or overly harsh - no harm or foul, I hope! I enjoy your posts. Dr. J, Thanks for the post. I do understand how folks can become sensitive to certain topics around here. It was just such a shock to read your post, I guess. I meant my comment as harmless and I was certainly not expecting the response that I received. That said, I should also say that one of the things I really enjoy about the board is the passion which my fellow board members share for this music, the people who create it, and the folks who enjoy listening to it. I love a spirited debate and I believe this board is big enough for the varied viewpoints that we share here. I thank you for your post. I think it shows real class. Don't let my comments deter your enthusiasm for whatever you want to say. I enjoy your posts, as well, and look forward to reading them in the future. Hopefully someone else will be on the receiving end next time! It would, however, appear that others may share my concerns: A little loud? Sorry but this is just too coincidental for words!!! I can honestly say that I will remember you next time I have to turn down the volume on my RVG! ( ) Take care.
  8. Geez Dr. J, Certainly didn't mean to pull ANYONE's chain on this one! I think my original question presupposes the fact that sometimes the RVG's sound significantly better(and sometimes they don't!) But since you brought it up.......I think the answer to the "canard" is found in the word "just". Clearly, the recording levels on the RVG's are set higher. Unarguably so. Therefore the only question would appear to be, "Is this the only SIGNIFICANT difference on the session in question". Also, it is generally acknowledged that all things being equal, the copy played at the louder volume will sound better, at least at first, to most people. Thus, to the extent that this keeps "coming up" it is probably due to what many folks might consider healthy skepticism at play here, rather than " tin ears". You are correct in how you would properly A/B the the two versions, making sure the volume level is the same BEFORE doing the comparison. Maybe adjusting line levels is an easy task on your system, I don't know. I do know that if you are having to do any volume adjusting during the blind testing, you are doomed from the start. That said, I picked up my copies of the RVG's today. And yes, I now have duplicates of a couple of these sessions. For what it is worth I guess I can do my own A/B test and determine for myself which one I prefer.....Tin Ears and all!!
  9. Oh Boy, I have been waiting for this one. Glad to hear the positive reviews. I had heard about the dubbing before and had always wondered, but Duke Pearson is one of my favorites so I am sure that will not deter me in this instance, especially since it does not appear to be a problem for anyone thus far. Shurdlu, I can certainly relate to your relisten review. That has happened to me on several occasions. Sometimes I think I am just not in sync with that particular style at the time of the first listen.
  10. OK Guys(m/f), Enquiring minds want to know. What is the scoop? Has the RVG really improved the sound or is the recording level just set higher?
  11. catesta, Check it out. Very funny. Raise Up Off Me
  12. Catesta, Hampton Hawes is one of my personal favorites. In fact, I am reading the autobiography someone referred to earlier right now. It is hilarious. A very funny read. I think my favorite is Vol.2 of the Trio stuff. Personally Four is one of my least favorite.Don't know why but it has never hit me. I still need the All Night Sessions and given their strong recommendations here, I just might have to move them up the list. Enjoy
  13. Only when it is one of the older Bluenote's that has like six alternate takes of the same tune!!
  14. All of these are now listed as available at Dusty Goove dustygroove
  15. I had always heard that the master tapes for this one were missing and acetate was the source for the original remaster. There was even speculation that a duplicate master existed in Japan, but I later heard that even the original TOCJ was created the same way. Hope someone can answer this definitively.
  16. Underground, Made it to the top of the list already, has it.... Glad you are enjoying the disc.
  17. Most are complilations of some of the bigggest names in jazz. A good introduction but I think you would have to leave off the compilation disc if you are really trying to pick the 100 essential. On the otherhand if you just want a list of the great jazz artist, that is another thing. Miles Davis....Tutu ???????
  18. Spotted this one at a used shop I frequent. Any interest? Mainly looking for trades.... Shoot me a pm if interested.
  19. So this has come up again. This happened to me quite some time ago, whenever the blackout on the East coast occured. I noticed the Organissimo board was down and posted a question on the AAJ board to find out if anyone knew what happened. My post didn't last anytime. I wrote Ricci and said I certainly did not mean to offend anyone, but I knew that a number of people frequented both boards. He was nice enough to email me back and remind me that Organissimo servers were more than likely effected by the blackout and maybe he had acted a little too hastily( you think?) Anyway, the thread was not reposted but.......... I bet it wasn't two weeks later that AAJ went down for a loooooong time. I always attributed that failure to very bad karma. We really can't do anything about the policy but it is a big turnoff for me and one I wish he would reconsider.
  20. I would have to cast my vote for Adam's Apple but I am a huge Shorter fan and don't even ask which one comes in second because I don't know if I could narrow it down that close. Love ETC., Schizo., Night Dreamer, the Vee Jays, Footprints, ... You get the drift. Wayne is fantastic. Had the opportunity to see him live a couple of years ago. Best show I have ever seen.
  21. I agree with grey on this. Pulling the plug on the BNBB was one of the biggest bonehead moves I have seen a corporate type make. Wrote and told them so at the time. They will never get that genie back in the bottle. Thanks to Jim for all his efforts. This is a great place to be.
  22. Rooster, Please forgive me if my previous post appeared insensitive. For some reason I just now read the thread containing the latest information regardng your Mom. Let me say how sorry I am to hear of your loss. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. Take care and know that all of us here are thinking of you. 23. This is a great thread for me because my focus has largely been on the classics. I am interested in exploring some of the new guys but have found much of their work to be spotty. I have a few Kenny Garrett, cds that I enjoy occasionally but I have been looking for the best of the other new artist. I generally agree with the recommendations I get from this board so keep them coming. As a side note, I thought it was interesting that AMG gave Symbols of Light something like 2** or something and generally panned it in the review. Not that I always agree with AMG but if the board members are right ( which I have already said that I think they are) then AMG is really off the mark on this one. Black Stars didn't even garner AMG's check mark as Moran's best, but there again I would have to go along with the board. Keep it coming, I am making note of the recommendations.
