  1. Don't be kidding. That business about "The attempt to describe life's meaning with the lmiting language of man's descriptive prowess" hits the nail on the head. That's the real deal. No matter how much there is, it's never all of it. So what do you do - never be satisfied or give up looking and stand pat? Or... How's about digging what we already have to the fullest and humbly yet fearlessly go about looking for more, knowing that the puzzle may well never be solved but that most likely there's a missing piece or two out there with our name on it? Hell, it might have more than one name on it, but it might not fit until everybody claims it. Aw, fuck it. Let's stay home and watch TV Land. Now THAT'S a party! Jim, Surprised by your response. I agree with you. I guess that is the limiting nature of the internet. Thought my post indicated that. I mean, HELL YEAH, Jim........I think What I found refreshing and pleasing was the obvious passion of your convictions. Guess kidding was not the right word but no need to take offense. We are probably pretty much on the same page on this. Hey, you want to watch some TV tonight? This time I am "kidding" you. Take care man!!
  2. Jim's post reads like some of Coltrane's later stuff. Note the passion, the emotion, the power of unsequestered descriptive prose. The attempt to describe life's meaning with the lmiting language of man's descriptive prowess. I mean, HELL YEAH, Jim........I think Just kidding with you man......
  3. Chris, More than a few of us here are walking down this path. My question, " Is there a distination or is it just a journey." I don't know if anyone "gets there yet". Some are further along the journey but there is a lot here to absorb. I agree that this thread is a good one . I am really enjoying the comments. I have sampled many of the titles mentioned here but I am admitedly "not there yet" either.....if that can even be achieved.
  4. Recently spotted two long OOP Bluenote's at a used shop I frequent. Does anyone need Donald Byrd's: Mustang: and/or Blackjack: Both appeared to be in excellent shape although the copy of Mustang did have a sawcut in its spine. Send me a pm if interested.
  5. Bruce, There was a short thread on this one a while back where I chimed in about how great I think this session is. It is one that you don't hear discussed that often but I think it is absolutely great. When I listen to the progressions on this one I catch every once in a while that Duke is playing with the outside if you know what I mean. I do not believe anyone would characterize this one as out, or even in and out, but occasionally you hear him playing around with some very interesting stuff. Given the date of the recording it is advanced in many ways IMHO. It is very subtle, but definently there. I really like this one and regret that Jordan did not stay State side to record more with Blue Note. As an aside I had located a mint used copy of this at a local shop I frequent and posted that it was available. To my surprise no one was even interested I guess everyone already knows what we know. Great session.
  6. impossible, Plenty of room for disagreement on this one but my personal favorites would probably go like this: Quartets with Sonny Clark Idle Moments Solid Matador Green Street There are more and on any given day one could easily find itself substituted for one of those above. I like a number of his sessions but when pressed I would have to go with those listed above, not in any order. B)
  7. I agree with Rooster on this one. Not in my Grant Green top five, but still a very good session and as someone has already said, it is nice to hear him in another setting.
  8. There are people who'd buy a piece of poop if it said "Blue Note" on the side. Well it depends on who remastered it! I know there is significant audible differences on some of the discs, but many times they are selling the disc to people who already own a copy of the session. Acknowledged in my original post. I am as guilty as anyone here, but it does not change the facts........!!!
  9. If Blue Note does this it will be the most conspicous example of price point marketing that I have ever seen. You really do have to give it to them, they do a great job of sellling the same stuff over and over again!!!. Not to me, they won't. What an absurd move... Moose, I think you missed my tongue firmly in cheek with respect to Blue Note's move. It would be the most brazen of marketing moves and would, I think, really confuse their customers. I mean, form Blue Note's perspective they role out the $19.00 model and when they have sold that to all the die hards (like some of us) they bring out the same thing, call it a different model with more main stream appeal, so to speak, and a new price.$13.00 Sounds like the marketing director of GM back in the 80's just moved over to Blue Note! The problem with that strategy is of course, that the die hards catch on pretty quick and next time they bring out the expensive model, folks are much more hesitant to buy. You do have to admire the success of the RVG marketing. I know there is significant audible differences on some of the discs, but many times they are selling the disc to people who already own a copy of the session. Hey, if they bought it once....... I think this may be the reason Blue Note decided to halt the SACD production. Once everyone has converted to RVG's they can start all over again with SACD's. What a country!!!
  10. Excellent point Jim. Are you suggesting "we can't handle the truth"? Information is one thing; knowledge, wisdom, understanding and forgiveness are something else. The interesting thing about many of these performances is the fact that they are now historical events. And like historical events, they take on deeper and at times different meaning when all the facts are known......
  11. Let me say as a father you just have to love this post. For all who just love the music you still have to love this post. This is what the Board is all about and while the choice of words may stray at times, the opinions should not. Everyone has a pesonal frame of reference. Let's admit that we love to read the critics if for no other reason than to disagree with them! Sometimes quite vociferously and with great emotion. Nonetheless, I welcome egirlsguy and hope he/she will continue to post here. The varying opinions have prompted me to check out an artist on more than one occasion, just to find out for myself who I agreed with. Critics serve a vital role in the love of this music ( or any art form for that matter ) and I am glad that members on this board are secure enough to feel free to post their true opinions here. This is a win, win for this board, even if a better choice of words may have been in order. Thanks for the post egirlsguy and welcome.

  13. I'll listen and enjoy most styles of music but I BUY jazz almost exclusively. Like Louis said, there is only two types of music........goood and bad!
  14. Jim, I find your thread quite interesting as always. While I am not nearly the student of the music that you are, your comments about Sly's influence on Miles and others rings true with me. Just recently I had occasion to listen to Archie Shepp's Attica's Blues, at the request of a friend of mine. After a pretty fair sampling I remarked that instead of purchasing that one I would just go out and buy a Sly Stone album. Didn't think much of it at the time but your thread made me recall my comments. I am not a trained musician but my instincts suggest that Sly Stone influenced many more jazz muscians than just Miles. Groundbreaking in many ways.
  15. Just finished Straight Life, the (auto)biography of Art Pepper. Actually written by Laurie Pepper, his fourth wife. Very interesting read. Recently began Raise Up Off Me, the biography of Hampton Hawes. This one is really funny. Makes me see Hampton in an entirely new light.
  16. Oh No, Looks like the Moose has been infected with Mad Greg disease!! Say it ain't so Moose..............
  17. I have never used them but for now I am sticking with alldirect.com You have to enter the last name first when searching for an artist but their prices and selection are good. I usually save up and get the free shipping.
  18. Picked up four of these today at dustygroove. They are already out of the Curtis Fuller again, but added the Tina Brooks, Leo Parker, Blue Mitchell, and Donald Byrd. I believe these are supposed to be the TOCJ versions. Looking forward to hearing these hard to find titles. Wake up Blue Note!!! Thanks Board Members for alerting me to this option.
  19. I spotted some OOP Blue Notes today at a local used shop I frequent. US 3(Conn.).......................................Horace Parlan Swing, Swang, Swinging (Conn.)..........Jackie McLean Never Let Me Go( CC) ........................Stanley Turrentine I am interested in trades. If anyone is interested in these, please send me a pm Thanks for looking.
  20. I have not really been too keen on her more recent work, Belly of the sun and new one Glamour, but this one I like along with her early work. Blue Light Till Dawn, etc. Traveling Miles is very unique in some was. She brings a lot of respect to the tunes. It is worth checking out IMO. Not for everyone but there is some good stuff here.
  21. I agree with all that has been said here, and although it has been done a number of times before, I would like to thank B3-er for his efforts. He has made this place a comfortable place to come to even if we have to put up with the rest of you guys . I remember writing an email to Blue Note at the time they shut their board down telling them just how stupid a move I thought it was. I still can't believe their decision, but in hindsight, I am glad they did. I sure don't miss all the lectures about how we were using their board and shouldn't say anything bad about their products, prices, attitudes, artists, or durn near anything else. I enjoy all the varying points of view that you get on this board, and especially the civility of the discussions. We should be able to disagree without resorting to name calling and beratement, and in large measure we do. From those spirited debates comes some of the finest assesments of the art form that we all love. Enough said, but let's not spend too much time lamenting the demise of the BNBB. From that demise, like a phoenix, Organissimo has arisen and has surpassed the old board. Congratulation Organissimo.
  22. Moose, Can't recall if I responded last year or not, but your post raised an artist who I would like to "taste" a little this year. That is Tom Harrell. I have no real idea where to start but he sounds interesting. I guess I am beginning to want to explore some of the guys who are still alive now that I have a pretty good understanding of the classics. Good topic. It is interesting where we end up going and what we end up listening to.
