  1. Wayne Shorter's 80th Birthday Celebration.

he and his band blew their butts off at Monterey!! part of the problem in DC had to be that he was tired and he was starting to get a cold (or something bronchial) in Monterey.

please tell Tim that we love and appreciate him for continuing to bring the eclectic mix of excellent talent every year. I wonder if he has any plans to include Cecile McLorin Salvant for next year. she's a "no-brainer" for Monterey!
  7. Charlie Haden on Tavis Smiley

enjoyed watching the Haden interview but it is very sad that "nature" played a miserable trick on him.

Box 36807, Los Angeles, CA 90036 In memory of Richard Jennings (from Ken Goldstein, director of the film, "Prophet Speaks": PROPHET SPEAKS tells the story of writer, painter, filmmaker, and philosopher, Richard Jennings, and of his importance to the world of black entertainers, mainstream music, and comedy. Among those who gravitated towards him were the artists who are now considered legends: John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Aretha Franklin, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, Sonny Rollins, and Max Roach, just to name a few. The ‘Prophet’, as Richard is known, began his life as an entertainer dancing around the steel mills of Youngstown, Ohio, in the early 30s. But he soon became a pioneering journalist covering the music scene in Detroit. Despite bouts of illness and personal tragedy, Prophet took up painting and filmmaking while maintaining a lifestyle in the hub of the jazz world for the last half of the 20th Century. )
  9. Richard "Prophet" Jennings Passes

yes, Clifford, Prophet lived in Sweden in the '60s, I believe (and maybe before that). he was married to a beautiful Swedish hostess for SAS who died in a crash off the CA Coast in the late '60s. their daughter Dominique was born in Sweden. Prophet knew practically everyone in the jazz world, including Sonny, Max, Miles, Mingus, etc., etc.
  10. Wayne Shorter on Tavis Smiley

in L.A., Tavis's show with Wayne is scheduled to be shown on PBS (KOCE for us) at 12:30AM, so technically it's Sat. morning. i'm taking a nap to enable me to stay up to see it. his birthday party last Sunday was fabulous, the Bowl concert on Wed. was wonderful (I especially loved him playing with Imani Winds), and i'm sure this interview will prove VERY interesting!!
  11. Julie Harris, RIP

I was fortunate enough to see her on stage in NY in the '60s. she was an original.
  12. Cedar Walton, RIP

I guess i'm one of the very fortunate ones: I couldn't count the number of times I have seen/heard Cedar in person starting from the early '60s until 2010. I was looking forward to adding to my fortune as he was scheduled to appear on The Jazz Cruise for a week next January. Benny Green will lead his group for the Cruise. R.I.P. Cedar.

I happen to have great interest in the Newport line-up but it just isn't fitting in with my schedule. ironically, i'll be in Boston on Aug. 7th, just a short while after the Festival. luckily, most of my favorites performing there i'll see elsewhere within the next month or two.
