  2. oh, my goodness, i forgot all about hugh romney from my 60s village days! good to hear that he's still kicking!
  3. No surprise here. I've always thought that people who complained that Dylan "can't sing" were missing the boat entirely. His incredibly precise timing and controlled manipulation of vowels is easily the equal of Sinatra's, although, obviously, entirely different. Same for his harmonica playing - no accidents there. None. ← OY!!!
  4. benny is such a sweet, down-to-earth man! glad you had that contact. it will be a great evening in march!
  5. seems like joan baez, for one, has never completely gotten over the hurt/rejection by dylan!
  6. that's not clear. maybe something will be mentioned in the second half.
  7. am i the only one who would be interested in knowing more about his immediate family and how/why he could just apparently turn his back on them?
  8. ooooooowwwweeeeee!!! i remember cuts from that album being on the jukebox at slug's in nyc in the '60s!!! sweet mem-o-ries!
  9. You're right, Valerie, the thread has sidetracked a bit, although I think both premises are being addressed, and I think the "alternate interpretation" (i.e., those who played w/Bird and are still around) has proved to be quite interesting as well. Did you think of a "disciple" that hadn't yet been mentioned? Sidetracked/hijacked threads are a regular event here........ ← thanks, free for all. i already submitted mine a few days back.
  10. i thought this was about bird's disciples! what does playing with bird have to do with that, necessarily?!?
  11. wishing you a little late but no less sincere the happiest and healthiest of years ahead! we met briefly at the litchfield festival a few years ago. best, always, valerie
  12. charles mcpherson, louis hayes and barry harris, just to name a few.
  13. don't know if it's been mentioned here, but buddy has an autobiography that i believe came out a few years ago.
  14. i'd give anything to attend the service for this incredibly special man but it's just not possible for me given that it will take place 3,000 miles away. i will also be there in spirit and hope many of my nyc friends are able to make it. john stubblefield will always be remembered and praised for the unique, beautiful, talented man he was. and i'm constantly listening to his most recent musical effort, "I Am Three"!
  15. i'm so glad that aside from his vast amount of professional accomplishments, it is being written and acknowledged about what a sweet, kind, lovely gentleman he was.
  16. their website answers these questions. i do not believe previous recipients are eliglible. also, the recipient must be living.
  17. no disrespect to tony and his talent but i think one of the reasons he's being acknowledged in the jazz world these days (he's appearing for the first time at the monterey jazz festival this weekend!) is that there are so few really good male jazz singers left , sad to say!
  18. Ray Barretto Tony Bennett Bob Brookmeyer Chick Corea Buddy De Franco Freddie Hubbard John Levy http://www.nea.gov/news/news05/JazzMastersAnnounce.html
  19. unfortunately, this is such an "old story/tragedy"! it happens much too often to our surviving legendary masters - in more cities than chicago!
  20. . . . and you can tell him that he never answered my email!!! LOL!!
  21. i don't even know you, jazzypaul, but want to extend my wishes nevertheless! she sounds wonderful. i can't comment on the way she looks as i couldn't open the picture! doesn't matter anyway as you sound perfect for each other! best to both of you, valerie
