  1. I just took a listen to both the 1987 McMaster and the Mosaic Select. If the drop-out is the one at about 4'09, just before the horns re-enter for the closing head, then it is not present in the Select. There is a kind of a glitch at around that point, which may be inherent in the original tapes, but it does not fade like the '87 does. Looking at the booklet for the Select, McMaster was also responsible for the transfer there, although it is presumably a fresh crack at it, as the sound is signigicantly fuller and punchier than the '87.
  2. Wait, they screwed up the RVG as well? I have the 1987 McMastrer ReMaster, where the final 15 seconds of the master of 'Saturday and Sunday' are banded separately (at the beginning of the alternate). The final 54 seconds of the alternate are then banded at the beginning of 'Frankenstein'. I have since bought the Grachan Moncur Mosaic Select, which includes the album banded correctly (and in good sound), so I passed on the RVG (thankfully, if it sounds as bad as you say). I take it the alternate is at the end of the RVG, rather than following on from the master, as on the McMaster? How can they get it wrong a second time? Don't they listen to their own CDs?
  3. I tend to think that the art of good sitcom directing is to coax good performances from the cast. Anything more than that tends to distract from the writing and acting. In fact, if I 'notice' the directing, then it's too much. Less is more. I find the editing of sitcoms to be far more crucial. That can be the difference between something playing well or falling flat.
  4. Thanks, John. However, in this instance, I'm afraid I have no faith in the Lord. Digging on the internet has produced suprisingly few results, too.
  5. Just bought the MJQ's Pyramid on CD (and very fine it is). The booklet doesn't give any discographical information. I found the following entry at the notoriously unreliable Jazzdisco site: http://www.jazzdisco.org/atlantic-records/...00-series/#1325 According to this, 'Django' and 'Romaine' were recorded at the Music Inn, Lenox and the remaining titles in the studio. However, to my ears, 'Django' and 'Vendome' have the same acoustics, while 'Romaine' sounds like the other studio pieces. Am I correct in thinking 'Vedome' was recorded at Music Inn and 'Romaine' actually comes from a studio session?

  7. Where have you been? Garth left EMI about 5 years ago and went to Wal-Mart. I think he's leaving Wal-Mart soon too. All of his CDs are discounted at Wal-Mart. (Garth told EMI, that he kept EMI in business for the last ten years) Yeah, they're still dining out on that Chris Gaines album.
  8. Could the fat lady sing at about 4.50? Thanks.
  9. Hey! I play soprano sax and bass clarinet!
  10. D. Krall did it on one of her Impulse albums. Still far from the 'standard' it deserves to be.

    Blue Note

Why would you want all that formulaic stuff?
  12. I thought that the stereo version of the album was recorded at the Opera House in Chicago, while the mono version was from the Shrine, L.A. Oscar Peterson's At The Concertgebouw was nothing of the sort- that was recorded at the Opera House (and the CD adds tracks from the Shrine). Not fake live albums, of course, but not 'as advertised'. Wasn't there some fakery with the live Getz/ Gilberto album?
  13. This is now definitely published (at least in the UK) as I checked with the publisher today. It's out there and in the racks, Roger ! Not at my local Waterstones, where it was not on the racks and wasn't on order. After a ten minute search for the item, they ordered it for me. I'm starting to wish I'd just ordered the damn thing from Amazon.
  14. I went through a Cockburn phase some years ago. Can't say I've heard much of his music since the 90s, though. The later stuff that I heard started leaning too much towards nondescript rock and slick production, although the songwriting could still be very fine. I should get reacquainted with his music. I remember enjoying In the Falling Dark, Further Adventures of..., Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws and Night Vision (a beautiful record that gets a two star AMG review! ) The mid-period stuff is still good: Humans, Inner City Front, The Trouble with Normal, Stealing Fire and World of Wonders all have their moments.
  15. That would be me. I'm up for the download.
  16. What were you Googling when you found this?
  17. Bill even plays a hint of the SOT melody at around 5'40
