  1. Good tribute from Steve Beresford in London Jazz News: https://londonjazznews.com/2024/01/01/tony-oxley-a-tribute-by-steve-beresford/ I was lucky enough to be at the two London concerts mentioned above. Powerful stuff. He also played and toured (well, Manchester at least) with Sonny Rollins in the 60s. With Stan Tracey on piano. That must have been interesting. Anthony
  2. Wonder why that didn’t make it to any of the reissue programmes. Is there only a single 10”? Might explain it.
  3. Looking on from the disfunctional UK, I found the general thrust of her comments on Twitter depressing and weird. On the music, the Steve Coleman years, Jump world, were good, the later slower scratchy bang on a can stuff became a cliche.
  4. Charles Mingus presents Jazz Workshop Vol 2 (Vogue UK 10”). My Dad’s record. 5 trombones stretching out, one track per side. Willie Dennis and JJ Johnson stand out. Great live sound, recorded in Brooklyn 1953. Must track down Vol 1.
  5. Hope Larry is doing OK. Missing his contributions! Best wishes. Anthony London
  6. ‘I play trombone’, Frank Rosolino. CBS Sony Japan Mono. Hollywood 1956. I am struck by Sonny Clark’s work on this. He has a lot of space. His long joyful solo on ‘My delux’ is a stand out. His style seems fully formed at this point. Anthony London
  7. After Ed Dipple’s death, Mole auctioned his record collection. It was a postal paper based auction, like the old Mole Jazz auctions (which I took part in a lot in the 90s). Pre eBay I guess so at least 20 years ago. I acquired a few records through the auction. The Giuffre and some Shorty Rogers on Atlantic. None of them are pristine, but well loved I like to think.
  8. In Person, Jimmy Giuffre Quartet. From the Ed Dipple collection! Mono second edition. Sounds great, one of my favourite Giuffre records. Buell Neidlinger is constantly interesting. I see Billy Osborne on drums went into v different areas, Tavares and LTD.
  9. I am listening to the LP reissue. It does sound a bit muddy. The sax and trumpet are too far back in the mix. Similar to the CD from the comments above. I am also wondering why Henry Franklin who I understand is the second bass player is not credited on the sleeve. That said, there are some great performances on this.
  10. Anyone going to Simon Spillett’s big band Tubby thing on Monday?
  11. Thanks! It’s a great hard bop date. I have a Mantra CD reissue. Looks a bit dodgy.
  12. Incidentally, Five Cats Blues, is I understand Sardaby’s first release, from 1967 and is a live recording. Anyone know where it was recorded? There is no info in the sleeve notes.
  13. RIP, I was pleased to discover him via a CD reissue of Five Cats Blues. Great record. Sonia is the stand out tune. I don’t recall any coverage of him in the UK press or if he ever played over here. Shame.
  14. He was a poet. The Pogues played a miner’s benefit at Hampstead Old Town Hall in 1985, on the same day they recorded a session on the Tube (a well regarded live TV programme on Channel 4, early Friday evening). I bumped into Shane in the bogs at the gig and mentioned I had seen the programme that evening, expressed surprise that they had made the gig. He said (swaying gently) that the Tube had paid for a flight from Newcastle to London and they had enjoyed free drink all the way down. It was a great gig. This is their performance on that day
  15. I think you can hear Alf Garnett actor Warren Mitchell at some points in this recording. That Ronnie Lang record is v good. Fluent West Coast alto at its finest. Great sleeve, I couldn’t resist buying that years back in a great record shop in Santa Cruz. The pre eBay years when you could pick up stuff pretty cheap.
  16. I spotted her at Walthamstow wetlands last summer, wished I’d said hello! Used to see her regularly at Oto and Vortex but haven’t visited either for various reasons this past year or so. It’s not a huge exhibition in Queen’s Park and a large number are blues-related. I think this may be because the latest book covers the blues. The prices interested me, around £1200 a pop. My partner bought me a Val Wilmer photo (framed, good quality print) of Eric Dolphy (in London 1961) which we still have on the wall. From Rhythm Records Camden in the 80s and I am sure much less than £100.
  17. Good for David Weiss to comment at length on the Cadogan Hall concert. Sounds a challenging travel schedule! I did enjoy last year’s concert at the Church of Sound. Craig Taborn replaced Donald Harrison. Now there is a venue where it must be difficult to get a good balanced sound. High ceilinged Victorian church.
  18. Interesting article on Val Wilmer’s photography in the Guardian today: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/nov/21/fela-kuti-bb-king-jimi-hendrix-miles-davis-val-wilmer-mi6 I visited the exhibition mentioned in article today in Queens Park London. I would recommend it. Some good photos I had not seen before. Also some familiar ones, such as Rashid Ali and Frank Lowe used on the cover of Duo Exchange.
  19. I recall that It can get a bit fetid in the store in the summer. My wife nearly passed out once when I had only reached G in the racks. I have a certain sympathy with the owner Fred!
  20. Yes, flight delays or something along those lines. My brother in law said they came on looking hacked off! Spike Wells and the QOW trio Monday night at jazz at the Oxford (Parrakeet) London NW5. Seem to be channelling Sonny Rollins at the Vanguard.
  21. Ah OK. He said people were shouting re Billy Hart when the ‘drummer’ was introduced ‘what’s his name?’
  22. Met my brother in law last night who was at this concert and claimed there was a lot of tension in the air, particularly around Billy Hart not being introduced and then playing really loud. Any truth in this? He may have misread the situation.
  23. Visited this afternoon ( and the Blue Note shop nearby, no stars just Tony Higgins Brit jazz reissue supremo). Picked up Philly Joe Jones, PJs beat with Bill Barron on tenor. UK original issue, £10. Lots of West Coast jazz which they are finding hard to shift! There’s a Tubby Hayes Tubby’s Groove Tempo issue on the wall which they are open to offers at around £150.
