  1. That is really sad. He is one of the blues musicians who could play jazz convincingly. He had the technique and understanding of jazz to be able to play it well. I once put together a 2 CD playlist of only his recorded selections with an amazing guitar solo on it. When I saw him live, his organ features were great, and then he would switch to guitar and it would be even greater. He was at the top of the blues community artistically.
  2. Would you like to present a BFT in October? It is open.
  3. webbcity, we are in the mid-month doldrums, which seems to have become a pattern. Usually there is another resurgence toward the end of the month!
  4. mjzee, You can present a BFT in another month. Thom has found a new Blindfold Test presenter who has already sent a June BFT to Thom. I will check our schedule and get back to you, mjzee.
  5. Our June Blindfold Test presenter is unable to present a Blindfold Test. We just learned of this today. Would someone please step up and present the June Blindfold Test?
  6. Track 2 is Track 3, "Sweet'n", from this, by my favorite bass player, who also composed this piece:
  7. She was very pleasant and knowledgeable about jazz. I am sorry to hear of her passing.
  8. Thank you. Oddly enough, this 1999 English CD issue on Snapper/Recall has better sounding recordings of some of the songs on Joe Conzo's Tico CD reissue series (all of which I own).
  9. So for the 1940s and 1950s, there really is no good discography for Tito Puente? If I want to find out who played the instruments on "Ran Kan Kan" for example, there is no source?
  10. This is a really good BFT, Cardinal Jazz Fan. I will post some detailed comments later in the month but I want to let you know that I am enjoying it.
  11. Some albums still not on CD: Jack DeJohnette--Untitled (ECM) James Newton--Paseo Del Mar (India Navigation). It is my favorite James Newton album Sun Ra--Unity (Horo). His other two Horo albums have had CD and digital download releases, but this excellent live album has not.
  12. This is one of those posts which reveals the great lack of tech sophistication of the author (me). When I had Windows 7 on my desktop, I found it very easy to add photos to posts here. I would right click on the photo. A drop down menu would appear with the word Properties as one option. By clicking on Properties I would get a link which I could copy. Then I would click on the Insert other media rectangle at the bottom right of the post here on Organissimo. I could then paste my link and it would appear in my post. Now Windows 7 has finally bitten the dust, and with Windows 10 I do not get the Properties option when I right click on the photo. I have tried the options I do receive, and can't figure out how to add a photo to my posts here. Can anyone with more than my tiny amount of technical knowledge give me a step by step tutorial? Thank you!
  13. I have seen Garth Brooks twice live. It was a revelation. Apart from Sun Ra, he is about the most memorable live performer I have ever seen in any genre of music. He is definitely not without substance. He is an incredible force of nature onstage, and gives it every ounce of energy he has. I do not own his albums, but I enjoyed his singing and the material he sang, in concert. The songs were really good, and he performed them better than just about anyone else could. He gave his backup singers mini-sets in the middle of the show. As his backup singers sang some of their compositions, Garth sang harmony inconspicuously off to the side of the stage. Not many big stars would do that. From the book of work I heard in concert, he is deserving of the award.
  14. I am looking forward to that. I love the Tito Puente recordings from the late 1940s to the early 1970s and there seems to be no good, comprehensive source which tells us when the songs were recorded and which musicians play on them. Unless there is, and I can't find it.
  15. Thom Keith, your mention of another version of the Ginger Baker song on his “Coward of the County” album prompted me to play that album on Spotify today. It is easily one of my favorite Ginger Baker albums now. It is a real jazz album.
  16. According to Thom Keith there is another excellent version of that song on Ginger Baker’s “Coward of the County” album. I plan to check it out soon. I recommend the entire Shabaka Hutchins album!
  17. I do not know about Idris Rahman’s trio Wildflower and am excited to learn about it. You are not thread bombing. I hope that the BFTs spark more musical discussion.
  18. I can rarely identify tracks or artists in anyone’s Blindfold Tests. I have come to view the BFT as enjoyable new listening and then learning the identifications later. Often I then buy some new CDs! I have come to not worry about whether I can identify anything or anyone!
  19. Thanks! My BFT 179 from last year had even more current London jazz.
  20. I agree about the Shabaka Hutchings cut. The entire album is strong. I almost chose other cuts from it for this BFT. It is one of my favorite albums of the past 20 years. I was not that familiar with Shakira when I saw her Super Bowl halftime performance. I listened to many of her songs on Spotify after that and was surprised by the variety in her musical career and by the depth and quality of some of her material. This particular song really struck me as different from what I have grown to expect from contemporary pop stars.
  21. I have tried in the past to put together an all-Sun Ra BFT, in many very different styles of music.
  22. I can't figure out how to insert photos of the album covers using Windows 10. I found it very easy to do with my old Windows 7. 1. contemplation, by Nubya Garcia, from Nubya’s 5ive (Re:freshed, 2017) Composer: McCoy Tyner Nubya Garcia—Tenor Saxophone Joe Armon-Jones—Piano Daniel Casmir—Bass Moses Boyd—Drums 2.
