  1. Chuck, where did you purchase yours? I just checked Amazon, USA and they list it for pre-order, available in January.
  2. In addition to the Dashiki, was Sal also rockin' some braids?
  3. Hell, your "That Devilin' Tune" sets are far, far better than this. What disappoints me is that there already IS a decent Smithsonian Jazz Anthology. I wish that, instead of going back to square one and trying to fit 100+ years of jazz history onto six CDs, they had done a volume 2 that started where the first one left off. That would give them six CDs to explore what has happened in jazz SINCE the first set came out. Volume 2 of the original "Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz" would've been nice, but as someone who has tried to use the SCCJ for teaching an Introduction to Jazz class, I like the looks of the new Anthology better. Much better coverage of the '40s and '50's Bop/Hard Bop/Cool stuff.
  4. I taught a jazz appreciation class for a couple of years at DePaul U in Chicago. One of the best concert reports I got was from a student who went to the Jazz Showcase to hear "Stanley Turntable"!
  5. Good find! I've been looking on Craigslist for grand pianos, but never thought of looking at thrift shops. Let's see the pics!
  6. So sorry to hear of your terrible loss. Good thoughts heading your way!
  7. I watched these the other day. I was a little frustrated at the editing; seemed to edit out some of Crouch's point, while leaving M'tume's points intact. But I'll give them both credit for having debate styles dripping with condescension. (that means talking down to you).
  8. I got to my office today and noticed that my jazz wall calendar has a photo of Moody for the month of November. I hereby declare November to be: James Moody Month!!!
  9. Seems like Office for Mac has been getting bloated over the last few versions. If some of the clunkiness has been alleviated, and it's a little more sleek, that would be a welcome development! Re: viruses, I've never thought that Macs were necessarily virus-proof. I always just assumed that hackers/virus writers just weren't interested because Mac represents such a small percentage of the computer world. Much more havoc-wreaking potential in writing something that will mess up PCs.
  10. Mrs. DukeCity and I headed up to Santa Fe on Monday night for the concert. We had a great vantage point from the mezzanine. Fantastic show! Sharon Jones is a terrific entertainer. jlhoots, did you make it? Did you dig it?
  11. Thanks for the heads-up. I'm gonna try to make it!
  12. Well, that's what we always thought. But recently there was this guy digging through some boxes at a yard sale...
  13. Nice. How is it that the folks in the crowd are not dancing, or at least up on their feet? Maybe we're seeing video of a few hours into the event? I DL'ed Eddie Palmieri's "Live at Sing Sing" from about this vintage, including "Muñeca", and it's smokin'!
  14. Reminded me of this one: Jazzed It was a balmy night and I was feeling thelonious. I hadn't had any tatum in so long I could have bixed a choirgirl. But I wouldn't have to - the moment I entered the Luboff Lounge, the babe with the giant eubies fixed me with a "come duke me" look. She uncrossed her legs and I could see almost all the way to birdland. I felt a tingle in my tito puente, and with a smile, I had her. No sooner had we closed my front door than this hot django had grabbed me by the hines and pulled me close. I insinuated my hand under her sweater until I found one of her brubecks, then I slowly traced a circle around her lee konitz. "Oh, baby", she cooed, "you make my red norvo wet." She unzipped my getz, and reached in to cradle my johnny hodges in her hand. "I'd love a little mingus, darling. My Gillespie is aching." By this time my king oliver was ready to take a solo; I could hardly wait to coda, but I obliged her. She hoisted her skirt, and I saw that she wasn't wearing any basies. I dove right into her satchmo and attacked her lennie tristano. "Ooh," she moaned, "I want your krupa! Zoot me! Miff me! Fill my cootie williams!" I was ready - almost. I felt my pocket. Uh oh. "Sorry, sweets" I said. No blakey tonight. I'm all out of condons."
  15. Go back further than that - to West African musicians putting beads on their kalimbas and gourds on their balafons to "dirty up" the sound. Absolutely!
  16. If he could get a grill mounted on the bell, Free could combine two of his favorite things!
  17. Thanks for posting that! Don't forget this one.
  18. Some brainiac with a little too much time on his hands figured it out: Guess what it is...
  19. By the way, welcome to the board, El Duderino. Apparently you're not into the whole brevity thing!
  20. I had no idea that "Throwback Pepsi" has a different formula. I thought it was just a packaging thing. At some local restaurants (and our local Costco) some have been selling Mexican Coke. It's sold in the old style glass bottles, and uses cane sugar.
  21. When I hear him play I'm shaken but not stirred.
  22. Sorry to be the grammar police here but therefore you disagree that he hates jazz but he thinks otherwise? I think you were looking for "I've managed not to hold it against him." Yeah, something like that.
