  1. So I'll skip the 73, eventually look for the 77 (but not at $17). Even most "legit" "finds" don't seem to really measure up to expectations, such as the 32jazz Left Bank sets (huge disappointments to me), the latest Blue Note Monk live set from a couple years ago, etc. The Blue Note Monk/Trane from a couple of decades ago and this latest Charles Lloyd set with Szabo are two exceptions.
  2. So I entered the 21st century and got a tablet,a Kindle Fire. What jazz apps, especially for listening, do you recommend?
  3. Uniique and wonderful decade for sure. I also love the 50's and 60's as decades for jazz. Wouldn't want to have to choose one of them, the way I can easily choose the 60's for rock. To me, the dropoff from the 70's to the 80's in jazz is depressing, though explainable on a macro level (seeking the next Wynton).
  4. Anyone familar with this one? Saw it on an email from jazzmessengers.com. Sound promising if the sound quality is OK.. Also, how is that June 1977 CD on Promishing Music? Probably pretty wonderful.
  5. I can understand your frustration, but I know as both a frequent buyer and a frequent seller here, there are other circumstances that come into play. I will often make or receive queries looking to do a trade or to grant or receive a volume discount on a large sale or purchase. Those don't lend themselves to posting on the thread ahead of time.
  6. Thanks. Yeah, the 70's were anything but a wasteland. There was some commercialized dross, but also a whole lot of utter brilliance. Just need to look the right places.
  7. Dicky Wells to Sun Ra is quite a range. I appreciated his work with Monk.
  8. Included with the superior 'Unity' album on this twofer:
  9. Thanks for the info on Callier. Tragically, he remains obscure in the USA. Looking him up in allmusic just now, I discovered he passed away two years ago. I didn't even know that.
  10. The first album was tentative - they hit their groove on "If I Could". That one, Grey and Pink, Waterloo Lilly, and Girls Who Grow Plump are the canon. I am also a fan of the Live at Drury Lane LP with the orchestra. I like the side-long "Dabsong conshirtoe" from Cunning Stunts quite a bit, but the rest is filler (really, all of their albums have some filler). The 4CD box set is very good, and likely all one person needs.
  11. Dusty Groove is the spot to get it. 'Black Love' and 'Let This Melody Ring On' also well worthwhile. edit: Actually, Amazon Marketplace now has these a good bit cheaper then Da Bastids do.
  12. Spectacular release, a dream-come-true sort of thing for me. Totally lives up to my lofty hopes for it.
  13. 1 – Gary Bartz- “Perihelion and Aphelion “ from ‘Another Earth’ Milestone Records 1968 Bartz in a quartet with Stanley Cowell, Reggie Workman, and Freddie Waits. Charles Tolliver joins in on the side-long title track. Paired with ‘Libra’ in an essential CD reissue. Bartz was very adventurous during that wonderful period. 2 – Juju –“ Nia: Complete the Circle” from ‘Chapter 2: Nia’ Strata-East Records 1974 The first two Juju albums were gems in the Strata-East catalog. Plunky Nkabinde was a visionary and a strong player. He continued to do very satisfying work into the early 80’s. I saw this group live at the Ethical Society in Philly shortly after ‘African Rhythms’ was released, and they were fabulous. 3 – Freddie Hubbard – “Aries” from ‘The Body & The Soul’ Impulse Records 1963. Magical reworking of the piece he had recorded earlier on Blue Note. Wonderful arrangement by Wayne Shorter. 4 – Carlos Garnett – “Chana” from ‘Journey To Enlightenment’ Muse Records 1974 Very much of a time and place, as can be seen by the album cover. Garnett was a major talent with broad abilities ranging from post-bop with Andrew Hill to a stint with the Jazz Messengers to his own recordings, which had prominent vocals and R&B leanings in a very spiritual bent. Wish he had been on a label better funded than Muse, as his records often sounded a little under-rehearsed to me, but had brilliance about them. 5 – Eric Kloss – “Love Will Find a Way” from ‘Essence’ 1973 Muse Records Our friends at Dusty Groove may describe this track as “a righteous burner”. Kloss, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, Mickey Tucker, Buster Williams, and a drummer named Ron Krasinski. This album criminally has never been reissued on CD. 6 – Norman Connors – “Mother of the Future” from ‘Slewfoot’ 1975 Buddah Records Classic anthem by Carlos Garnett with strong tenor work by him. Jean Carn on vocals, Hubert Eaves on keys, Michael Henderson on bass (I love the electric bass on this, though Thom sounded off against it). Very embarrassing album cover 40 years on. 7 – Azar Lawrence - title cut from “Bridge Into The New Age” 1974 Prestige Records Lawrence was in his early 20’s when he recorded this beautiful cut. The all-star cast includes Jean Carn and Woody Shaw, as well as lost vibist Woody Murray. 8 – Sergio Mendes – “Empty Faces” from ‘Crystal Illusions’ 1969 A&M Records Lani Hall doing what Lani Hall did best. Milton Nascimento masterpiece with words by Hall. This album went to #33 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and has held up well, as have all the Brasil ’66 albums. 9 – Nate Morgan – “U.G.M.A.A.ger” from ‘Retribution, Reparation’ 1984 Nimbus West Records Morgan, a too-little known monster of a composer/pianist from L.A., passed away recently. He was only 60. Played with Rufus for awhile prior to Hawk Wolinski, and recorded some awesome material on Nimbus West in the 80’s. 10 - Babatunde Lea – “Prince of Peace” from ‘Umbo Weti: A Tribute to Leon Thomas’. 2009 Motema Featuring L.A. local legend Dwight Trible on vocals, Lea on drums, Gary Brown on bass, and, most interestingly, Patrice “Forget Me Nots” Rushen on piano and Ernie Watts on tenor. Rushen put out two very promising advanced jazz albums on Prestige when she was 19-20 years old before turning to R&B to make a living. She sounds great here, as does Watts, who shows he can play anything well. 11 – Terry Callier – ”Dancing Girl” from ‘What Color is Love’ 1973 Chess Records Callier suffered from not fitting neatly into a musical category (similar to Nina Simone and early Gil Scott-Heron in that regard), but whatever kind of music this is, it’s breathtaking. Charles Stepney should be immortalized just for his arranging on this song and Callier’s “Alley-Wind Song” alone. Callier became a legend in the U.K. 25 years later thanks to the championing of Beth Orton, another very fascinating musician on her first few albums.

  15. Depending on where you order from, aDE's 35€ might be the better offer: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00IOQSW7A/ I've eyed this, but I really know sh*t about the music it contains ... would it be of interest to someone (uhm, me) who prefers soul the raw southern (Stax) way? NO............ It is great stuff, but it is the antithesis of raw & southern. Agree, and it's not Motown either. Really its own thing and if I didn't have much of this, I would jump on it. This is the ultimate Philly International cut to me. Give a listen, and if this style sufficiently appeals to you, go get the boxes. They are great music at a great price.
  16. The Bill Dixon just arrived, to join the Hemphill and the Steig in my collection, and I hope to pick up the others in 2015.
  17. I would too. *IF* the "legitimate" sources would get up off their lazy asses and release them. I will only wait so long. The PD releases arguably discourage legit releases. I sense that people like us who care about sources and mastering are in a minority. I agree that the waiting game is painful. Legit releases are dead except maybe in Japan. When's the last time we saw anything new stateside from Blue Note, Riverside, Prestige, etc. rather than the same old same old rererpackaged (Concord) or silence (EMI).

  19. That's because at individual price, the people who spent the money to produce the product get paid. Occasionally.
  20. In the photo credits at the back, there are a lot of LOC credits for pages 53-88, so you may be correct. Others who have the book may be much more qualified to discuss the sources of the photos from that era.
  21. Hill. Moncur. and Rivers are discussed a good bit, especially Hill. Washington and Gale are not mentioned at all. The history seems very breezy - not a lot of background. The book is worth the $51 to me because of the artwork, not the text.
  22. Here's the sad answer to some of the Nate Morgan questions. Jazz legend Nate Morgan dies of heart failure ‘Did what he came to do’ OW Staff Writer | 11/27/2013, midnight Nate Morgan 3 Longtime Jazz pianist Nate Morgan died recently of heart failure at Gardena memorial hospital in Gardena, Calif. He was 60. Rene Fisher, spokesperson for the Morgan family, says funeral arrangements are pending. Before his passing, the famed musician suffered through a series of debilitating illnesses including a stroke that temporarily sidetracked his career in 2008. Morgan’s eclectic artistry behind the ivories put him in elite company among other Los Angeles Jazz musicians and solidified his place as a bona fide master of the genre. In 2002, a community-wide tribute was held in response to Morgan’s failing health at the then newly opened Jatkodd Cultural Fine Arts Center in the Crenshaw District. Over the years since then, various benefit concerts and gatherings have taken place to honor Morgan’s legacy. Philomine Morgan, his wife of more than 30 years, says she has fond memories of her husband’s loving spirit and playful attitude. “These last five years he kept me laughing,” she recalled with a chuckle. “He made sure to say ‘I love you’ every morning and every night. He also sang to me every chance he could get.” She continued, “Before he died, he told me that he has no regrets, that if he passed he did what he came on this earth to do.” During his final days, Morgan’s diminished health almost required the removal of his arm, Philomine added. “I couldn’t let that happen” she said earnestly. “He’s not just a musician, he’s an artist. When the doctor told me he might have to amputate Nate’s arm, I said: ‘if you can’t save his arm, don’t wake him up.” Morgan spent part of the 1970s playing for Rufus and Chaka Khan and collaborated in the early 1990s with rappers Bone Thugs N’ Harmony. He’s also been touted as one of the best kept secrets of the Los Angeles Jazz scene. Morgan is survived by his wife and their six children. Darius Nathaniel and Deshonda Johnson, and Nymekye, Jabari, Dors and Yusef Morgan. Now I'm fascinated and confused. I need to find out who the 52-year-old Nate Morgan who is friends with all of the LA Jazz people is that I am connected with on FB. Egg on my face. No need for egg, it's totally understandable. But it would be interesting to see what he knows about this Nate Morgan, who seems to have made wonderful use of his life. Love the stories of his marriage.
