Newbie (1/14)

  1. I see an advertisement on page 24 of the January 15, 1967 Detroit Free Press that confirms the lineup mentioned by aj lacourse: Sarah Vaughn, Dave Brubeck, Modern Jazz Quartet, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Clark Terry & J.J. Johnson.
  2. I wrote a piece on the 50th anniversary of Live in Seattle with some of my research. http://www.seattleweekly.com/home/960901-129/the-night-that-john-coltrane-played. Steve
  3. Much has happened since my original post. I learned that Frances and Joe were seperated in the late 70s and officially divorced in 2002. He married Virginia Carter in 2003. Virginia owns the collection of audio and video Joe made. I am slowly documenting the contents of the collection and helping Virginia find buyers. The audio and artistic quality of the collection is uneven. That said, there are some gems (Clifford Brown, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, etc.) that I am shepharding toward commercial release.
  4. Cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver is a common precursor to liver cancer. "According to present knowledge, alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency, alcoholism, naturally occurring carcinogens, drugs, and the hepatitis B virus seem to carry the greatest risk of cancer developing in a cirrhotic patient." http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/776394.
  5. I set up a website to collect and share information. So far, I am in contact with Frances Brazil - Joe's widow, Gary Hammon - Joe's saxophone student and the first African American to get a scholarship to the New England Conservatory, Jeffrey Winston - Joe's teaching assistant at the University of Washington, and Ray Baldwin - Joe's band manager at the Black Academy of Music.

    Joe Brazil

I am researching the life and impact of saxophonist Joe Brazil. I plan to publish some initial work in the April 2012 issue of Earshot Jazz. I am speaking to his widow, students, and peers in Seattle. If you have any source information about Joe, please contact me off list at stephengriggs@aol.com or 206-523-4983.
  7. Joe's address was 17846 Fleming Street, Detroit, MI 48212. According to Joe's widow, he bought it with his brother for his mother. When she passed in 1951, he set up the basement with a bar and used grand piano. About 20 people could fit. Google Street View
  8. I am working with a small fundraising team to help composer, teacher, trumpeter Jim Knapp. Jim established the jazz program at Cornish College 40 years ago and continues to teach there today. His unique big band music appears on 3 CDs by the Jim Knapp Orchestra, Secular Breathing, On Going Home, and Things for Now. His latest project is Scrape, a small string orchestra plus harp and guitar. He compiled his personal approach to arranging in a book "Jazz Harmony." Jim's compositions and lessons have inspired a wide variety of musicians from Jim McNeely to Myra Melford. He was born in Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana with a BA and MA in Music Composition. Jim recently lost his right leg to diabetes and has incurred medical and home care expenses beyond his insurance coverage. Our fundraising goal is $30,000. There is a benefit concert of Jim's music on November 2 at the Triple Door in Seattle. It is cosponsored by Cornish College and Earshot Jazz as part of the Earshot Festival. Tickets are $24 general admission, $12 for students, and are available from the Triple Door by calling 206-838-4333 or going to the online calendar. All ticket proceeds will go to Jim. We also accept donations by credit card at www.jimknappmusic.com/donate. We are planning to release a CD of music donated by Jim's colleagues and former students in the near future. Included will be music by Brad Shepik, Aaron Alexander, Briggan Krauss, Mizue Murikami, Arnold Hammershlag, Myra Melford, Tim Young, Brent Arnold, Jay Thomas, and CUG. We are also planning a concert in February, 2012. Details will be available soon. Please share this information with all who may be interested. 9. I prefer getting words about musicians as close to the source as possible. If anyone can speak to why they create, what they want to express, and how they manage to handle obstacles, it's the artist. Even though musicians may get help from writers, I like these autobiographies: Treat it Gentle - Sidney Bechet Let's Get Down to the Nitty Gritty - Horace Silver Really the Blues - Mezz Mezzrow Q - Quincy Jones A Call to Assembly - Willie Ruff -Steve Griggs http://stevegriggsmusic.blogspot.com/
