I was just listening to a Ray Charles compilation of some of his Swingtime material and, when "Kissa me baby" came on I thought - for the first time - what the fuck was Stanley Turrentine doing on the west coast in 1950!!!??? (Apart from making a Swingtime session with Ray Charles, that is.) (Stanley would have been sixteen then...) Anyone know? MG

I never realised there was a firm called Rooster Ties! Learn summin every day! When I was at work, I wore ties. Strictly speaking, I wore A tie. I only had one and wore it until it wore out, when I'd buy another (from the Tie Rack). I liked outrageous cartoon ties. My favourites were of the Pink Panther leaning on a lamppost playing a tenor sax, then of a leering pink pig. (John Major (then Prime Minister) paid an official visit to the department and thought I'd put the pig on specially for him!) That's the ultimate in not having to think about what tie you wear. MG

My all time favourite big band! Been playing Erskine a lot lately. But for breakfast this morning, I had Coasters - That is rock & roll - Atco (Cheapo Clarion issue which I got in the sixties, flogged and have now recreated) Fela Kuti - Again excuse-o - Coconut 1976 Top whack wake-up music. And played loud! MJQ at Music Inn vol 1 - Atlantic 1956 now Manu Dibango - Afro-soul machine - Metro Select compilation of which, strangely, I don't have much of. MG

I didn't know. Damn, but he was good! OK, the link to him on organ combos contains corroborative info relating to Gator, Allen Lowe and the dentist. "Gator could be a pain in the ass, but he and Bill Jennings worked so well together that I have forgotten everything but the good stuff." MG

Ah well, I'm a pervert - I prefer to listen on my laptop because I can hear it all better - I like the tinny sound I get from it. I've still got the LPs, but 95% of my collection is on my hard drive - only a few hundred LPs and K7s to rip now and, if I can get downloads, I will. MG

I suspect Ace's CDs have undermined the market for the original compilations. I think they include everything he recorded before ABC took Duke over. You can certainly put all his issued LPs together from their contents. MG
