  1. Just saw this. HAD to post it! (French edition of a single.) MG
  2. Not even "Cherry" with Milt Jackson, or the concert with Freddie Hubbard? Those aren't the usual CTI kind of record. MG
  3. I like this one better than the first. Frank Haynes, Bill Hardman & Billy Gardner. Who could ask for anything more? (Apart from Columbia hiring better sleeve designers.) Breakfast today with Fela Kuti - Again - Excuse-o - Coconut 1976 Fela Kuti - JJD (Johnny just drop) - Afrodisia 1977 Gwigwi's Band - Kwela - 77 Afro series (the only one in 77's Afro series ) 1967. (Arr & Alto sax; Dudu Pukwana, leader & alto sax; Gwigwi Mrwebi, pno, Chris McGregor - v interesting band but the normal kind of Township stuff I like. Which means this probably isn't a recommendation.) now MJQ at Music Inn vol 1 - Atlantic - 1956 next Lionel Hampton 1951-53 - Chrono Classics MG
  4. This afternoon, a quick detour to Ghana Decca presents ET Mensah & his Tempos Band (issued in) 1958. Apostrophe Man wants to see the designer. Then to Cuba. Orquesta Casino de la Playa - Canta Felo Martinez - Egrem 1964 Orquesta Ritmo Oriental - El ritmo de la Ritmo - Areito 1995 Orquesta Aragon - El son del Pariente - Musicuba No date but the band's 35th anniversary was 1974 And now for something completely different Fats Domino - Fats on |Fire - ABC 1964 Fats was responsible for my taste in music; I heard "I'm in love again" in 1956, when Elvis Presley wasn't even a name to me, and it was the first music I'd ever really liked. MG
  5. I always felt that was nice but somewhat lackadaisical. "If I could' is a bit more alive. MG

  9. Well, when Jim posted above, I thought I'd read about working for Fulson before, but had forgotten it this evening. Stan started at the same age as Gator, but didn't have something approaching a hit single. MG
  10. Ah!!! Lord has no mention of Stanley in any of the Fulson recordings. Thank you. Sixteen!!!! MG
  11. Never heard of this one. Looked at Discogs' track list and was struck by Julia Lee's session for Premier. But not "Lotus blossom". what happened there? Mercury forget to buy the master when they bought the other stuff? MG
  12. I was just listening to a Ray Charles compilation of some of his Swingtime material and, when "Kissa me baby" came on I thought - for the first time - what the fuck was Stanley Turrentine doing on the west coast in 1950!!!??? (Apart from making a Swingtime session with Ray Charles, that is.) (Stanley would have been sixteen then...) Anyone know? MG
  13. In bits and pieces, Allan Sutton Directory of American disc record brands and manufacturers 1891-1943 More complete than Rust's old book on the subject, which just stuck to what jazz fans would be interested in. MG
  14. More Shleu Shleu this afternoon Original Shleu Shleu soul (as it sez on the back) - SS 1975 Original Shleu Shleu (without soul) - SS 1975 Shleu Shleu a Paris - Haiti Records 1972 Shleu Shleu a New York - Mini 1973 Toujours le meme 4/3 - Haiti 1974 En filant les aiguilles - SS 1974 MG

  16. Those two K7s can't be found, even on Discogs. But they were issued on a CD by Buda Music in 1991. This one is going for $12 at Discogs. Amazon UK has one for £34.99 + p&p. MG
  17. Lurvely!!! Lunch with Lobi Traore - Bambara blues (electric) - Oubien 1990 Lobi Traore - Bambara blues (accoustic) - Oubien 1991 Same songs on both albums; both on Oubien, but the first distrib by EMI Pathe Marconi. Now Erskine Hawkins - Swingin' in Harlem - Vocalion (Tax) 1936-38 Next Pee Wee Ellis - Home in the country - Savoy 1977 MG
  18. Breakfast this morning with Les Soeurs Sidibe - Ni la kani - Maikano (1992) VERY cheerful! Keith Pringle & the Pentecostal Community Choir - Prayer & faith - Savoy (1983) Now Them three, being themselves (1981) Next Nanou Coul - Tieba - Maikano (1996) MG
  19. I never realised there was a firm called Rooster Ties! Learn summin every day! When I was at work, I wore ties. Strictly speaking, I wore A tie. I only had one and wore it until it wore out, when I'd buy another (from the Tie Rack). I liked outrageous cartoon ties. My favourites were of the Pink Panther leaning on a lamppost playing a tenor sax, then of a leering pink pig. (John Major (then Prime Minister) paid an official visit to the department and thought I'd put the pig on specially for him!) That's the ultimate in not having to think about what tie you wear. MG
  20. My all time favourite big band! Been playing Erskine a lot lately. But for breakfast this morning, I had Coasters - That is rock & roll - Atco (Cheapo Clarion issue which I got in the sixties, flogged and have now recreated) Fela Kuti - Again excuse-o - Coconut 1976 Top whack wake-up music. And played loud! MJQ at Music Inn vol 1 - Atlantic 1956 now Manu Dibango - Afro-soul machine - Metro Select compilation of which, strangely, I don't have much of. MG
  21. I didn't know. Damn, but he was good! OK, the link to him on organ combos contains corroborative info relating to Gator, Allen Lowe and the dentist. "Gator could be a pain in the ass, but he and Bill Jennings worked so well together that I have forgotten everything but the good stuff." MG
  22. Ah well, I'm a pervert - I prefer to listen on my laptop because I can hear it all better - I like the tinny sound I get from it. I've still got the LPs, but 95% of my collection is on my hard drive - only a few hundred LPs and K7s to rip now and, if I can get downloads, I will. MG
  23. I suspect Ace's CDs have undermined the market for the original compilations. I think they include everything he recorded before ABC took Duke over. You can certainly put all his issued LPs together from their contents. MG
