  2. Since according to the 2000 Census the median age in the U. S. is 35.3 , the sampling error is huge and of a type that could explain the under-reporting of females if we assume that the more promiscuous females tend to be younger females . Not necessarily. Doesn't this just mean that nobody was surveying 8-year-olds? No . The sampling error here is real . The median age of the adult ( 18+ ) U.S. population is 43.3 according to the 2000 Census . The median of the survey sample used is higher . In fact , the median age of non-virgins would be somewhere between 35.3 and 43.3 since we would want to include all teenage non-virgins . Leaving out the population under thirteen does nothing to make the study sample less skewed . If there is anymore to say on this topic it won't be from me....
  3. Jim's skepticism was completely warranted . Since according to the 2000 Census the median age in the U. S. is 35.3 , the sampling error is huge and of a type that could explain the under-reporting of females if we assume that the more promiscuous females tend to be younger females . Of course who needs to worry about representative samples when you are in the businsess of , " designing research that addresses key marketing issues " . The really sad part is that putatively scientifically-minded academics used the services of these corporate myrmidons instead of doing their own research .
  4. The average number of partners reported must be the same if we assume no sampling error , no homosexual activity , and if we assume all respondents agree on what constitutes a sexual encounter . What Jim's line of reasoning points up is the fallacy of drawing conclusions about means from facts about medians and modes . The median or modal number of sex partners for men is in fact higher than that for women . Basic biology and the higher incidence of STDs in the male population would lead us to suspect as much . Now I don't think the investigators are mistaking mode or median for mean , so it's not a question of the interpretation of the data being driven by extra-scientific agendas . More than likely , men over-report and women under-report for cultural reasons . Perforce , prostitutes would under-report greatly .
  5. Trudy Pitts also fits into this thread based on her first two Prestige sides , though her singing on some tracks is NOT for me ! Most of the tunes from the first two Prestiges are on a " Legends of Acid Jazz " CD from Fantasy with the psychedelic cover art of that series . This is a shame , because that first Prestige lp has a terrific covershot of Ms. Pitts : Edit to replace broken image link
  6. The two Columbia Horn lps are available from Collectables : The sound quality is decent , though not as outstanding as other Columbias ; these may have been recorded in Los Angeles instead of New York . I think anyone who enjoys the Something Blue OJC would want to own this 2-CD set . Both Emil Richards and Paul Moer are under-appreciated I think .

    Freddie Gambrell

Kind of surprising that there has been no discussion on this board of this talented pianist . His first two World Pacific albums would be of interest to any piano jazz fan . The first is a trio date with Ben Tucker and Chico Hamilton , the second , a duet with Ben Tucker . Recording was done at Radio Recorders in Los Angeles in 1958 ( with superb sound engineering by Ralph Valentine ) . Critical plaudits were many . John S. Wilson wrote that Gambrell has , " a very rhythmic , percussive style with an appealingly dark ,blues-bred texture and good structural sense . He swings powerfully at moderately fast tempos and on ballads reveals his derivations most clearly for he has a fondness for stating a melody with a wry , Monkian twist , for occasional splashes of Garner's ripe orchestral explosions , and for excursions into Tatum-like displays of facility " . His third and final World Pacific date was a jazz interpretation of The Mikado , which I haven't heard , but which was panned by Downbeat . We can only hope that Blue Note gives us a CD reissue of those first two World Pacific sides . After revisiting this music recently , I went in search of information as to his present whereabouts . I discovered that he had continued in music , playing both piano and trumpet and recording under his birth name , Federico Cervantes . Sadly , at age 68 , he died in 2004 . His daughter has put together a nice tribute website for him , and is offering FREE CDs of his last recordings . Please see : The Freddie Gambrell Memorial Website
  8. Actually , 6 of the 9 tracks from Now Hear This appeared as bonus tracks on Introducing Duke Pearson's Big Band which came out on CD in 1998 .

  10. It had a rather interesting Reid Miles cover : Never on CD to my knowledge . Edit to replace broken image link
  11. On the strength of his work with Stanley Turrentine , I'll throw in Butch Cornell .

    Oscar Dennard

Here's what an online Eddie Costa discography has to say regarding Blues Suite : As I am familiar with Costa's style I will listen to my tape of Blues Suite and see if I can pick out Dennard . Thanks Pete for this discographical tidbit .

    Oscar Dennard

I have long been interested in learning more about this obscure pianist . This earlier post limns important biographical and discographical information which I would like to flesh out : I believe Dennard was born in 1928 . I know he spent time in Memphis , though I don't know whether he was born there . He also spent time in Des Moines before joining Lionel Hampton in the mid-50's . The unissued 1956 trio session is listed as being recorded for Henson . Does anyone have any information on this label ? Dennard also appears on a 1959 Jubilee album called " Blow Man Blow " by tenor player Jesse Powell . Would anyone who has heard this care to comment ? Here is a photo of Dennard playing with Sulieman , Nasser and Smith taken at a Zurich club circa 1959 : Here are some scans of the very rare Japanese CD " The Legendary Oscar Dennard " : Edit to repair broken image links
  14. I don't think anyone on this board will argue what is essentially a platitude . Technical competence is required to climb aesthetic heights . Technical mastery however is not . I objected to your original , stronger claim that , " the greatest musicians have the greatest technique " which is a false claim of identity between something subjective and something objective .
  15. So Basie , Ellington , Miles , Monk etc. are not great ? I ask as someone who doesn't believe that primitivism or technical incompetence is the hallmark of authentic or expressive jazz . Technical sophistication is hardly the essence of greatness , let alone a prerequsite for it . Seems to me it is possible to possess great musical understanding without having instrumental mastery . Wouldn't this be true of some of the great jazz arrangers for instance ?
  16. I wouldn't describe Hopps and Novosel's playing as " overly aggressive " in the main , however I would agree with you on the ballad track " Sweet Song " . Here I find it hard to believe that Hopps was even in the same room with Cowell ; if he was , he sure wasn't listening or sympathetic to what's going on . That track always leaves me scratching my head . Board member Ken Dryden's AMG review put it a little more neutrally : ".... Hopps' over the top percussion contrast(s) with the beauty of the leader's ballad "Sweet Song ' . Contrasts indeed , just not in a good way musically . Hopps is more supportive on the rest of the tracks, though I do wish he wasn't so forward in the mix .

    Eddie Costa Corner

Lonehill has now issued the Costa trio date he did for Dot : This CD also has the trio date he did for Jubilee . I remember reading years ago that the stereo takes for the Dot session were entirely different from the mono takes . Having only heard the mono takes , I have not been able to confirm this . Can anybody here shed some light ? The Japanese have reissued this but I don't know whether they reissued it in stereo . House of Blue Lights is an essential Costa recording .
  18. As in, was this reissued, perhaps under a different title? It all looked vaguely familiar, but I couldn't place such a session as being with Blue Mitchell and Barry Harris, so I went for it. Gots to be good, right? http://www.jazzrecordrevival.com/popup.cfm...l&itemoid=14463
  19. What it is : The famous Watts Towers in Los Angeles . The Hear Ye , Hear Ye cover shot is something else .
  20. Isn't the guitar player Phil Upchurch on this one ??
  21. Rumor has it that Ira Gitler has one of the private tapes that exist of this March 1954 session that was lost in the vault fire , so we may yet hear it someday .
  22. Re : the Brew Moore Quintet album ..... 1) Was the whole August 1955 concert at Berkeley recorded ? Odd that they just put that one tune from the gig on the album . 2) On that live track , who might the unidentified guitar player have been ?
  23. Two of my favorites : 1) Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers on Impulse from 1961 . Doleful , moody , atmospheric version with a muted Lee Morgan taking the melody , Curtis Fuller with a muted solo and best of all , Wayne Shorter , whose plangent tone is so well suited to this material . Well recorded as well . 2) Stan Getz on Columbia from 1975 ( album called " The Master " ) . This is an exuberant , swinging quartet with Albert Dailey and Billy Hart providing terrific support .
