  1. On the new expanded edition of Live at Sin-e is a performance of "If you See Her, Say Hello" that nearly had me in tears. I went out and bought Blood on the Tracks the next day.
  2. Go with a Honda. Or a Toyota. Stay away from the Chrysler Cirrus. Mine plagues me on a quarterly basis.
  3. Here is another vote for Duluth. Any time of the year is fine, as I have been hardened by many years of upper-midwest winters. We could stop at the Electric Fetus's northern store. And, a beer at Grandma's. The wife and I head up there each year in the fall around our anniversary. It is not to far from Minneapolis and it is beautiful Up North.
  4. I asked Santa for the HRS set. Wooo!
  5. I have heard only the String Quartet #1 op.5, and I LOVE it. I have a Capriccio Recoding performed by the Peterson String Quartet. Absolutely sublime. What are some good recordings of the rest, outside of that box, which I have looked at myself?
  6. This set was there for at least a year and a half, as I asked for it for a birthday gift in July 2002. I dig the set. In small doses, but I still dig it.
  7. I have to adjust the belt on my Pro-Ject table if I want to play 45s. I don't do it very often, so when I do, I play ALL of my 45s to get it out of my system.
  8. There are some superb museums in the Minneapolis St. Paul area. The Minneapolis Institute of Art has a more classical approach. Some of the non-permanent collections they have had on display have been amazing. Last year they had a exhibition of several generations of an Asian family from traditional from the 19th century to some avant-garde installations created specifically for this show. The Walker Art Center is more progressive, featuring up-to-the-minute trends in the art world. Some end up being pretty left field, and several things in the premanent collection leave me cold, but they are out there taking some chances. They do a good bit of music co-productions as well. [Andrew Hill, ICP Orchestra, AACM's 35th Anniversary celebration, Simon Shaheen, Bill Frisell, etc.] The Weisman Museum over in St. Paul has some excellent exhibitions as well. A couple of years ago, they had an excellent show of early 20th century Russian avant garde painters, i.e. Kandinksy, Malevich, Popova. Several smaller galleries are scattered thoughout the area as well.
  9. True, but as it stands these are decent prices for excellent material. Now, if they were clearing house to make way for things at midprice, I would be one pissed kitty.
  10. I am waiting to receive the following discs from them: COUNT BASIE, At Newport 1957 CD NEW JOHN COLTRANE, Sun Ship CD NEW JOHN COLTRANE, Live At Birdland CD NEW JOHN COLTRANE, Stellar Regions CD NEW JOHN COLTRANE, Interstellar Space CD NEW JOHN COLTRANE, Olatunji Concert Live CD NEW The Basie was $7.88 and the Tranes were $11.82. I bought six to get the free shipping. I think those are the wholesale prices! I may bid on Live in Japan in the near future...
  11. I know that it wasn't solo, but Eddie Louiss plays unaccompanied for decent stretches on both Stan Getz's Dynasty and on the Trio HLP discs. If anyone could, it would be Eddie.

    Anthony Braxton

That Locke bio is an fine intro to Brax's world. I found my copy at the local Half Price Books for under $5. Much better than reading the Tri-Axium Writings, which I attempted in college. I would love to hear the 1991 Willsau Quartet material, but have never been able to find one, with the exception of an over-priced copy at Jazz Record Mart in Chicago. I have the Santa Cruz material on hatART, which is quite good, with the same band. I rather enjoy Braxton's mid 70's releases on Arista. There were rumblings of Mosaic putting these out at some point, since Michael Cuscuna was invovled with the sessions themselves. The quartets with Altschul, Dave Holland, and either Kenny Wheeler or George Lewis are outstanding. I still see some of these on LP now and again, somewhat reasonably priced.
  13. Well I like the ones with the cat. Couw's new avatars are great! Cat Shatner is the bomb. I just now got the Gato Barbieri cover. Gato=cat...duh me!
  14. I just finished with a period of nothing but electric miles from 1969-1975. I don't know that I am fully finished yet... I will go through periods of listening to ECM stuff and European-flavored jazz, usually in the fall and winter. I listen to classical almost exclusively in the winter months, and never in the summer. In the spring and summer I have more electro music in the player/on the table. I guess it is a seasonal thing.
  15. That would be the Buddy Bolden cylinders, which Wynton Marsalis heard and was able to emulate for us on Ken Burns' "Jazz."
  16. I bought the Jimmy Lyons title and it was pressed off-center. I had to take it back.
  17. The Sunburned Hand of the Man Jackie O Motherfucker
  18. Hell yeah. And, I would have to agree with all of the votes for Free for All, especially the title cut. Can't wait for this RVG!
  19. I was listening to this again myself. I have beena fan of Derek since all of the buzz surrounding his first release, and he has grown a great deal since then. Soul Serenade was actually recorded before Joyful Noise, and released after. I like this album much more, and I hope this is a vein he continues to explore. There is a nifty interview on the NPR website with him where he talks about the urgency in Trane's music, and then plays a riff from A Love Supreme. His timing is impeccable, and his tastefulness is beyond repraoch. It sounds as if he has many more years in his fingers than he actually does.
  20. AB, are you thinking of anything for the artwork yet?
  21. Agreed. I'm gonna have to sport one of those.
  22. Ghetto Walk - Hell yes! I would also love to hear your take on "Lazy Afternoon."
  23. Sweeet! Cat Shatner would have to be on it. You could even do one of those animated things that you tilt and he could move. Here are my requests: Sun Ra's "Space is the Place" Larry Young's "Tyrone" Big John Patton/Grant Green's "The Yodel" I'm sure I will think of something else... And at $7 I would buy some for gifts!
