  1. As one who whittled a collection down, I would just urge you to proceed with caution. There are a number of titles I had listened to not all that much and traded or sold, to my later regret. That regret is even larger as I am on a buying hiatus until I make a downpayment on a home in Dec., because I think of all of the things I could be listening to right now. Whenever I get the urge to purge the collection, I now walk away. Granted, I can do it more easily as I have gotten rid of many things that did not blow me away. I would say that my interest sometimes wanes, but more often than not the waning interest is in a particular kind of music rather than music altogether. At one time I got rid of almost all of my classical CDs. I regret that now. I have learned that my interests vary by mood, and often by season. [Ex: most ECM titles work best for me in fall and winter.] Steadfastly I will say that I am a fan, not a collector. Unlike several of my music-lovin' friends, I no longer have the completist urge. This was a dangerous thing for me, as the conquest proved to be all-consuming.
  2. That is a killer Andrew Hill cover, AB! What fonts do you have going there?
  3. Have these: Billy Bauer - PLECTRIST Tal Farlow - THIS IS TAL FARLOW With my man Eddie Costa! Buddy DeFranco/Oscar Peterson - THE GEORGE GERSHWIN SONGBOOK Pretty straight versions, but beautiful. Had these at one time or another: Dizzy Gillespie - PERCEPTIONS Sounded rather third stream in a bad way for me. Hank Jones - URBANITY Alan Shorter - ORGASM Never quite gelled for me, and I love all of those players, esp. Gato. Ray Brown - BASS HIT! George Russell Sextet - AT THE FIVE SPOT
  4. I thought that exact thing when I saw your Dolphy cover. They could get it done at an art college, for pete's sake. Free, I'm almost sure. There are some of those albums out there that I refuse to buy util there are some better covers on them. {mostly grey market stuff.]
  5. Damn, impossible, that looks better that many legit releases I have seen. [iron Man, anyone?] Nice work!
  6. Not that HatHut needs the design help, but I did this one for an Ellery Eskelin/Han Bennink album...
  7. I made a cover for the Tal Farlow Fuerst Set and Second Set albums I got from the free trial of emusic...
  8. not one from the list, but a dream session that I came up with.
  9. There is a radio series about the blues as well, hosted by Keb' Mo' that will be starting on many stations the same week as the TV specials.
  10. I was a member for a while, and one of my co-workers currently is a member. Great service, and amazing selection. They have a great number of titles that you will never find in a regular video store. My only word of caution would be when renting two disc sets. I ordered the one that said disc two, thinking I would get the two disc version, but I only got the second disc! May be this has changed. No complaints otherwise.
  11. Konda previously unissued? WTF? Love that cut.
  12. There is an additional track on the reissue, an alternate of "Traveling Riverside Blues"
  13. I have this date and all I can ever remember about it is loving the second cut, 'Blessing in Disguise.' This is one of the trio cuts with Rollins, Garrison and Elvin. They are all swinging like mad, and they all get long solo features in the tune. It is somewhat rambling, but in the best possible way, as if they are all just having a good time playing the tune. Highly recommended.

    Eddie Costa Corner

I gotta find House of Blue Lights somewhere. I see the japanese LP copy of the album go for less than $20, but a CD would be nice. Who owns the Dot catalog now? Vivendi/Universal? They need to reissue "Tal" on CD in the US too. However, I would go for a Mosaic set of his, should it include all of those sides.
  15. Yesterday: Art Blakey - Indestructible John Fahey - City of Refuge Last night: Bonobo - Animal Magic Soundtrack of Our Lives - Welcome to... Jackie McLean - Mosaic disc two [the Right Now session] This morning: Philip Glass - Uakti plays... Aguas da Amazonia Lee Morgan - Leeway RVG Jaga Jazzist - Animal Chin EP
  16. There is a review on the Dusted website today. Dusted
  17. How about a Tony Scott set? Maybe the Complete Brunswick and RCA Victor sides? 1953 Music After Midnight Brunswick 1954 Tony Scott Quartet Brunswick 1954 Jazz for GIs: Tony Scott and Mat Mathews Brunswick 1955 Tony Scott Victor 1955 Scott's Fling RCA 1956 Both Sides of Tony Scott Victor 1956 The Touch of Tony Scott Victor 1957 Tony Scott in Hi Fi Brunswick And throw in these as a bonus... 1958 52nd Street Scene Coral 1959 Free Blown Jazz Carlton 1957 In Concert [live] Sound 1957 The Modern Art of Jazz Seeco C'Mon Mosaic...five or six discs...pleeease...
  18. Here is another vote for Three Men Walking. ECM re-released it not long ago, so it should be readily available. Some of the sides with Papa Joe vocalizing in a nonsense language are definitely unique. I expected to hate them, but didn't.
  19. Henri Texier wrote a tune called Don't Buy Ivory Anymore. I assume it is about poaching in Africa. The only version I am familiar with is by Bojan Zulfikarpasic. A heart wrenching thing, it is.
  20. Last I heard, he was being sued by the Beatie Boys' lawyer to recover their legal fees. Bastards.
  21. This week: Tal Farlow - Complete 1956 Private Recordings on Definitive. [Evil, I know, but I had to have them.] $16.99 at Dusty Groove. Eddie Costa is the man. Last night: Grant Green - His Majesty King Funk /Donald Byrd - Up with... This is killer. Interesting to hear Larry Young and Grant with Ben Dixon rather than Elvin. Harold Vick kicks some ass on this too! $5.98 Lester Bowie New York Organ Ensemble - Funky T Cool T on DIW. James Carter, Steve Turre, and others. Smokin'! Only $5.98!
