  1. His '700 Sundays' show which was recently broadcast on HBO had a wonderful 15 minutes or so chunk about growing up in the jazz world. Billy's uncle was, of course, Milt Gabler and his dad ran the Commodore music shop and put on jazz concerts. He had a nice story about Billie Holiday taking him to see 'Shane' and a little joke about Zutty Singleton too. I guess I'm just happy any time jazz gets some attention.
  2. Absolutely fascinating article and thanks Paul for bringing it to our attention.
  3. Looks like Richard Havers who did such a nice job on the big Verve label book is doing the same for Blue Note: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1452141444/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2GW3WTOB57QL6&coliid=I3IVV6PBT2N3RQ Not much info available now but it's coming in late October. P.S. - Does this mean Ashley Kahn's long-awaited Somethin' Else book is finally dead?
  4. Allegro has the two Montgomery EPs up for pre-order: http://www.allegro-music.com/online_catalog.asp?sku_tag=RES18014 http://www.allegro-music.com/online_catalog.asp?sku_tag=RES18015 They also have up one for Charles Lloyd Live at Slugs too: http://www.allegro-music.com/online_catalog.asp?sku_tag=RES18016
  5. I'd horsewhip you if I had a horse.

  7. The new Uptown CD is coming on May 20th and it looks like it could be a good one: Trumpeter Howard McGhee is documented on various radio broadcasts and studio sessions from 1945-1947. Joined by altoist Sonny Criss, tenorist Teddy Edwards, pianist Hampton Hawes, bassist Addison Farmer and drummer Roy Porter. 19 tracks and over 67 minutes of music. More info will follow shortly I'm sure: Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ILGPIE8/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2GW3WTOB57QL6&coliid=I3AQZN7893LJ00
  8. OK, there's probably only a very few people here who might be interested in this oddity but I wanted to let people know about it. Lemon Nash was a ukelele player from the Storyville district of New Orleans whose career spanned from the earliest days of Jazz up through the 1960s. A fixture for decades in the French Quarter, Lemon Nash also traveled with circuses and medicine shows around the country, hawking blood tonic and performing from his vast repertoire on the uke. With biographical notes by Adam Machado. Coming soon on LP! 1. Bourbon Street Parade 2. Papa Lemon's Blues 3. Serenading with Frank Wagner 4. Grave Digger's Blues 5. Trouble With the Man 6. What Was a Medicine Show Like? 7. Bowleg Rooster, Duckleg Hen / Sweet Georgia Brown 8. $25 a Night 9. Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out 10. Anybody Seen My Kitty? 11. Please Give Me Black and Brown 12. Barrelhouse 13. Let the Good Times Roll 14. What a Friend We Have in Jesus 15. Way in the Hee Hi Hoo 16. We Played Anywhere 17. I'm Blue Every Monday 18. Stagolee 19. The Battlefield 20. Rabbit Brown 21. If You Could Fight Like You Can Love 22. Those Drafting Blues 23. Spano's and Fox 24. Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen 25. Big Rock Candy Mountain 26. The Jiggler Vein and the Raincoat 27. Brownskin, Come and Go With Me Lemon Nash is not very well represented on CD with only about a dozen tracks spread out on several 504 Record discs. He's a very charming player that is a throwback to a much earlier time. Sound samples of all the songs can be found at the Arhoolie page: http://www.arhoolie.com/jazz/lemon-nash-papa-lemon.html And here's the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HNTP0LA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2GW3WTOB57QL6&coliid=I692C4GIW7BIH
  9. Great news! Thanks so much for letting us know!
  10. I totally agree with jeffcrom. I love the GHB Jazz Foundation and own hundreds and hundreds of CDs, LPs, books and videos from them but they only issue about one Black Swan CD per year and they are mostly collections. Not sure why they don't do some huge sets of The Complete Paramount Blues Recordings, Jazz Recordings, etc. I can only assume it would be too expensive and time consuming. In any case, it's common knowledge that the Buck Foundation owns the Paramount material and I hope they can produce enough evidence of it to make Revenant rethink its plans.
  11. Sent a PM for the Walter Bishop Jr. disc.
  12. Storyville Records has just announced a George Lewis box set collection featuring 8 CDs that re-issues a big chunk of his material that has appeared on Storyville over the years. Only about 2 CDs worth has not been issued on disc. The Elizabeth Eustis material on Disc 3, all of Disc 5 and a handful of tracks on Disc 7 have never been on CD (to the best of my knowledge). I think this set would be a great addition to anyone's collection who doesn't have much George, and even worthwhile to a Lewis nut like myself if only for those two CDs worth of rare material.
  13. I'm a little surprised that so many of Red's 1978-1979 Galaxy recordings haven't been issued on CD. As far as I can tell Equinox, Stepping Out, Strike Up The Band and So Long Blues have never gotten to CD. Is there a good reason why these haven't been re-issued when so much of his earlier stuff has?
  14. Between the changes in shipping policy and the fact they now collect tax in my state I'll be using Amazon a lot less. DeepDiscount and ImportCDs are almost always going to have a cheaper price now. I'll still use their marketplace sellers for older and oop things but as far as new stuff goes I don't think Amazon is going to be cheapest for me anymore.
  15. The IPO recording 'Magic 101' was his latest release: http://www.allegro-music.com/online_catalog.asp?sku_tag=IPO31023 And in the description it lists this disc as "the first in a series of three CDs" so I think there will be some new Frank Wess in the future. Also, George H. Buck's Progressive Records just released a 1981 session of Frank exclusively playing flute a few days ago: http://www.jazzology.com/item_detail.php?id=PCD-7057
  16. Just wanted to bump this up to the top again -- the project ends in 4 days so if people are interested in this they need to become backers quick!
  17. Hi. I just wanted to let everyone here know about a potential problem with the Chick Webb Mosaic set. The booklet that came with mine was botched and missing about 20 pages. The first 11 pages are fine but then it repeats a few pages and then skips all over the place. All mixed up. I called Mosaic and they're aware of the problem and it's only affecting a handful of sets. They're sending me out a new booklet right away. I urge everyone here to check out their booklet carefully and contact Mosaic if there's any problems.
  18. Looks like the next Uptown Records release will be a good one: Tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet and baritone saxophonist Leo Parker are captured live on this previously unreleased recording from April 29th, 1947 at the Mutual Street Arena. 11 tracks and over 70 minutes of music featuring trumpeter Joe Newman and Russell Jacquet, pianist Sir Charles Thompson, bassist Al Lucas and drummer Shadow Wilson. 1. Bottoms Up 2. Medley: All The Things You Are, She's Funny That Way, Music Hall Beat 3. Music Hall Beat 4. Body And Soul 5. Throw It Out Of Your Mind Baby 6. Oh, Lady Be Good 7. Medley: Memories Of You, Unidentified Tune 8. Robbin's Nest 9. Mutton Leg 10. Bottoms Up 11. 19. Glad this one got funded! This is the first Kickstarter project I've contributed to and am happy to see it's going to happen.
  20. Looks to me to be a tie-in with the upcoming book of the same name. http://www.thamesandhudson.com/Verve/9780500517147 Could be interesting.
  21. I don't mean to sound stupid, but all the music (aside from the six LPs) is on a flash drive?
  22. Info is up: http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=252-MD-CD
  23. You get a bit of Quincy Jones' article on Clifford Brown from Downbeat and then Morgenstern's essay is pretty much the rest of the book. I have no idea if it's been scaled down from the original booklet but it seems like a pretty nice package to me for the price.
  24. The booklet is CD sized and 58 pages. The opening page says: "Inside booklet is reproduced from the original 1989 release."
