  1. I'll second that--they go together like gin, tonic and ice.
  2. Steve Lacy and Mal Waldron. Richard Davis and everyone.
  3. J.D. Parran! Does he play with a King Crimson vet on this one?
  4. Cecil Taylor Unit, Akisakila (Trio). Great music for a windstorm.
  5. If you decide to, I would be one happy, paying customer.
  6. The article has a pointlessness to it: written by someone who neither understands the music or makes any effort to understand the music. Name-dropping Yeats and Adorno tries to distract from the fact the article is 11 paragraphs of "I don't get it..."
  7. My first impression was that it was some obscure McLean date from the 70s. Doesn't fit with anything, but I agree whoever it is is a big Jackie Mc fan. The pianist sounds a bit like Mal Waldron at one point. I wonder if it is the pianist's tune?
  8. Big Band and Quartet is top notch. Great Hall Overton arrangements, nice solos from Phil Woods and Thad Jones and Frankie Dunlop is firing on all cylinders.
  9. Richard Davis is a big favourite of mine. As for bassists I've seen in concert, Harrison Bankhead, J.J. Avenel, Bob Cranshaw and Ken Filiano were all great. Ditto for Charnett Moffatt, who I've seen on acoustic (with McCoy Tyner) and electric (with Ornette Coleman). Glad to see Michael Henderson was mentioned. He was really wonderful with those Miles Davis bands. He was a memorable bass player. He did some great things with Derek Bailey.
  10. Meanwhile, Vince Wilburn, Jr. has sounded off: http://www.milesdavis.com/us/news/miles-davis-estate-official-statement “I Vincent Wilburn Jr., drummer and nephew of Miles Davis, and Cheryl A. Davis, daughter of Miles Davis, want to clarify that “Blue” the ultimate tribute by the band Mostly Other People Do The Killing, is not supported by us, nor done with our cooperation or participation."
  11. Track 1-6 is "Peace Piece" from Sevens Steps to Evans with Gordon Beck, Kenny Wheeler, Ron Mathewson, Tony Oxley and Stan Sulzmann.
  12. John Coltrane, Offering, Live at Temple University.
  13. Ethan Iverson has written a blog post about the kinda Kind of Blue. http://dothemath.typepad.com/dtm/2014/10/classical-music.html
  14. The Bad Plus along with Tim Berne, Ron Miles, and Sam Newsome will be performing Ornette Coleman's Science Fiction in its entirety. Ethan Iverson has written a nice feature on the album: http://dothemath.typepad.com/dtm/science-fiction.html
  15. Dewey Redman, Look for the Black Star. Steve Reich, Tehillim. Elvin Jones, Live at the Lighthouse
  16. Sad news. I really enjoyed his posts here and his passion for the music. RIP.
  17. 1-4 is from Stanko's Almost Green, recorded in 1978 with Vesala, Palle Danielsson and Tomasz Szukalski. Still stumped on the others.
  18. Really enjoyable selections. Almost all of them have me stumped, but there's some familiarity there with some--just can't put my finger on it. 1-7 sounds like homefromtheforest's favourite soprano player. With Masahiko Togashi? 1-1 sounds like some Finnish dudes. Whoever it is, I really like it. 1-2 My first thought was one of those Japanese pianists from the 1970s (Masahiko Sato?), but also sounds like it could be some of Dave Liebman's buddies. 1-4 Has a bit of a Stanko-Vesala vibe to it with a Komeda influence? I really enjoyed 1-5.
  19. And how about the Nordic obscurity percentage?
  20. Abbey Lincoln, People In Me (Inner City). Nice session from 1974 featuring a few members of Miles Davis' band of the time (Dave Liebman, Al Foster, Mtume).
  21. I have a few classical albums approaching 40 minutes. There's some relevant information on optimal side lengths in this thread:
  22. That's a great one. One of my top 5 favourite Lacy records.
