  1. That was probably just a comment by a reader, not by the author. John Coltrane is "John Coltrane", and Wynton Marsalis is "jazz giant Wynton Marsalis". How much funnier than that can you get?

  3. Available in full online here: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/08/11/raised-voice Yea, but how come that barely registers a blip here, when the "Sonny Rollins" thread is 5 pages long?... Yes, exactly. I agree the parody wasn't very funny, but I don't understand all the outrage. Silliness at the expense of sacred cows is not such a bad idea, so relax a bit folks! Anybody want to write a Cecil Taylor interview?
  4. Do you mean it destroyed it, or it just won't spit it out?
  5. Okay, I went for the 40th Anniversary edition box for the extra material; I love the live stuff from this period. About 40 pounds on UK Amazon marketplace.
  6. Somebody just tell me it's good so I can order it already...
  7. That's a great set, I have the vinyl version; too bad the sound is so wretched... I had reached the conclusion that the individual Candid CDs sound worse than the Mosaic. Correct? Not very familiar with the Candid releases, but from the little I heard, they are all in the same ballpark. It seems to me the original recordings were poor enough that no amount of cleaning and polishing will make much difference. It shocked me how bad these recordings sound compared to the earlier "Looking Ahead" on Contemporary.

  9. I'm sure cheap aluminum would sound much worse than expensive aluminum.
  10. Thx for the reminder; ordered Andrew Hill solo and Tony Williams
  11. Heads up for a good price (78 quid shipped to Canada) on the Red box from amazon.co.uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ECK21WO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  12. I got this with the 10% off from Mosaic, and listened to the first 2 lp's today. Very interesting to have the "fly on the studio wall" perspective and listen to the various bits and false starts and incomplete takes. It also gives an idea of how the group worked through their recording sessions; there is usually one full alternate take for each piece that is done as a run through, and one take that is intended to be the released version. There are some interesting differences between the "rehearsal" and the "official" takes; in the rehearsals, the play is more economical, linear and sparse. For the release takes they go in "full on" mode, Elvin Jones in particular is significantly more exuberant and "showy". The sound is variable, again with the official release takes sounding better and with a bit more ambiance and reverb. I'm wondering if the released takes were mastered differently, and that carried over into this issue? All in all it's great, I'm happy I got it. And of course, as usual, a very nice booklet with high quality photos.
  13. This thread made me order the Lark's Tongues box; on a related note, I read somewhere that KC is touring this summer...
  14. You may have been joking, but I am listening right now to Hum Dono on Google music, and I am not joking! Edit: I see it's available also from Itunes and Amazon.
  15. This has just become available in Canada, and for 8 $/month I'm impressed with the selection. Can't compare to other services like Spotify, since that's not available up here. Hard to find stuff, like Miles complete Plugged Nickel, the On the Corner sessions, all the ICP albums, complete Art Pepper Galaxy, the Dexter Gordon Prestige material, etc. Sound quality is acceptable for the most part. The only thing is that the search can be iffy, and for some reason when you choose an artist, it won't show more than 100 albums. You'll have to search with artist name and album title to find things sometimes. I'm listening to the Muddy Waters early 40's plantation recordings right now, great stuff; very different from the later Muddy.
  16. Evans box arrived in my mailbox today. Listening right now to disc 1 and it sounds just fine.
  17. Thinking about the Mosaic LP box... does it sound better than the cd version?
  18. The Vogue box for $28: http://www.amazon.com/Jazz-Disques-Vogue-Various/dp/B0087PI57K/
  19. I've started in order, and so far the early ones where Willem Breuker was involved are firecrackers; try 001, 007, 008, 009 and go from there.
